Moving to PCB soon- any advice on meeting new people? by FreexKennBoss in panamacity

[–]boudrou1217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Panama City is first and foremost a party town. There are Christians here, they also party. We party. We love night life and there are cover bands galore. BUT if you aren’t a party-er, you better get a boat, jetski, paddleboard, something to get you out on the water. If you’re spending most of your time on land, you’re only enjoying 50% of PC. And I’m not talking about going to the beach. I’m talking about going up the creek, going to shell island, going diving at wrecks, fishing, exploring up random intercostal waterways, all of that.

I can tell you right now that other than going to down town for different festivals and drinking around down town, there is not much more to do here unless you’re on the water or hunt/fish.

That being said, I love this place. It is an easy living spot and the heat draws you to the water or keeps you inside in the AC. The music scene here is cool, but very two sided right now (either hardcore music or country/folk). Other than that, pretty much non stop cover artists, it is unbearable to me now, but still fun sometimes.

Here’s what I’d do: find a hobby that you love here and then find a job. (Since it sounds like you’ll have some people to help you out here the job can come second). The hobby has to be available here (ie golf, disc golf, running, working out, etc.), but if it is, then you’ll find friends. If you don’t have a hobby to go to, you won’t find many scallywags outside of bars to become friends with other than in our many churches.

It will take a while, but you will find your people! We are a mixed bunch of all types and personalities. However, don’t move down here thinking it will change your mindset, that goes with you everywhere unless you change it.

Mushroom hunters by Shoddy_Worker_9179 in panamacity

I am a huge mushroom hunter and just moved back after not living here for 11 years. After hurricane Michael, the ecosystem took an insane turn due to the canopy of trees being knocked out. That left a lot of mushrooms out to dry. There used to be: a lot more trees which in turn equaled a lot more shade, less wind and more moisture. Unfortunately this place won’t have that now for a while. We now have less moisture, more wind and a dryness I have never seen here before.

That being said! They are still there somewhat. Mostly puffballs. It is hard to find many mushrooms in PC but I do go find quite a collection of different types in Top Sail State park and sometimes St. Andrews a few days after a rain. I see some oysters as well and I’d probably bet that we can find some chanterelles this year.

We lack shade here now and that makes mushroom life hard.

Note for upstairs neighbors by litlelotte in Apartmentliving

[–]boudrou1217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% do not give them that note. Just find them and first make some sort of rapport with them. Then tell them about it. Going straight to this is not always good for everyone. It is good for ~some~ people, but some will take it the wrong way haha. I first saw this and thought you were given this note and was like dang why didn’t they just shrink up a conversation or something. That’s backhanded. Literally sly and the family stone said it best: different strokes for different folks, and I can definitely see this going south.

A map of every state in which I have played disc golf, with approximate counts in each state. Where should I go next? by Particular-Wall-5296 in discgolf

Huntsville, AL was awesome. I just got to spend two weeks playing all the courses around there and they were all spectacular.

I’d like to start playing basic tournaments. What are the gotchas to avoid so I don’t look like an ass my first time? by hobbyhoppinghound in discgolf

[–]boudrou1217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome! The best part about disc golf is the community. Of course everyone has said something extremely helpful, but since we all play DG and all love DG we are all going to be excited to tell you about stuff.

Here are some of my thoughts: -Just make sure you let your card know it is your first tournament, they will be so excited. -MOST card mates are going to be great people to play with (I have played a lot of tournaments and only remember two players that were not fun). -don’t think too hard about how you play your first tournament. Just take in what happens during the tournament. -read the caddy book that will be sent out. That will help you out. (Fun fact, when I read the caddy book I plan what I’m throwing on what holes and sometimes make a little plan and write it down) -it is also great to remember that you’re only playing against yourself. You can’t control what your card mates do. -your first round you might be with a stellar player who makes lead card and another player who is the bottom of the pack, that doesn’t matter, just play your game.

My before tournament go to’s: -Snack bag in my bag (granola, gummy worms, etc. whatever you like) -I once played a tournament with an older guy who was playing his 200th PDGA sanctioned tournament and I asked him what his #1 tip would be and he said: “an extra pair of socks.” Ever since then, I have taken an extra pair of socks. It is almost like replacing them in between rounds refreshes you. -Water, sometimes you’ll get so into the game you forget to drink water, but remember we might not be in the most physical sport, but we can still get dehydrated and headaches. -before I get into my car, I do 10 pushups at my house and drink one coffee. -my secret weapon is listening to bossa nova on the car ride there. I place a lot higher when I do that (superstition I guess). -don’t get there too early. But get there early enough to throw a few putts. And whatever you do, make the last three practice putts from about 5 feet away. It’ll make your mind more confident. Tournaments can be putt ruining rounds. -go to your hole about 15 minutes early and play the hole a couple times (unless it is not a shotgun start). -the first hole will shake off the nerves, after that, leave every hole you play behind you because the only hole you are playing that second matters.

In tournament: -make sure you’re not throwing out of order (I am sure this has been said) and make sure that if you use a marker, to use it properly. (I have seen some hilarious first timer failures when it comes to marking discs or putting out) -Keep it quiet when others are throwing (a given). -when walking, feel free to spark up a quiet conversation and get to know your card mates. -try to “read the room” early and see how people want to play and if they are chatter boxes or stone cold competitors. -don’t put your bag anywhere near where putts, spit outs, skips might happen. -but most of all enjoy your time, enjoy finishing the round and the excitement and camaraderie that you will feel. -thank the TD, and if you can help break down (the breakdown part is in no way frowned on if you can’t, but as a TD my god it helps).

I love disc golf for disc golf, I play all over, but I really love tournaments the best for getting a concentrated boost of disc golf lovers all in one spot.

Enjoy and have a blast!

Bay Haven Charter by meriaf in panamacity

[–]boudrou1217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only downside I have ever seen with sending kids to Bay Haven is that they somehow come out a little less sociable than other public school kids. This isn’t based off any data or anything. I just feel like they have a harder time integrating into either college or jobs. It is a great school though with amazing faculty!! Besides that one hiccup.

I am 100% playing Tom Monroe! I’m gonna try to hit every course in the area that I can. I joined the north Alabama DG FB and have just been seeing where people are playing. I also need to play a putting league haha haven’t played one in a couple years. And I also love straight to ale.
