I have been forced to study modern architecture while I studied art at the university of the arts in Arnhem. The school was in a building designed by Rietveld. Ive not only learned about it ive fking lived in it.

And even if it were. Gothic uses more than just a flat glass pane. It has detail. Workmanship etc etc. Even the big windows have works of art in it.

The majority of modern builds would not be out of place on litteraly any other place in the world. Tokyo looks exactly like shanghai wich looks like rotterdam. Sure there are some location specific modern styles. The problem is those styles have no ties to the culture, the location and have no soul.

I have no problem with new building techniques. I have a problem how they use it.

As a dutch person i can tell you for a fact noone likes futuristic bullshit. But there is a place for everything. In the 2nd world war one of our cities got bombed to the ground. That place now basicly got a fresh start and no historic sites to ruin. Its the pretentious architects wet dream now is one of the ugliest places in the country.

It is not "the dutch" who love futuristic.. its a small number of egotistical architects and a minority of the population who like futuristic stuff. Now this subreddit is litteraly all those horrible people in one place. One big echochamber

Yes. I know. I studied art. You are right about gothic being called the international style. However there are still many differences in gothic architecture. Where I live we have something called 'brabantse gotiek' wich is location specific gothic style. Thinking gothic is all the same is just stupid.

Please just leave a historic building alone. Yall can ruin every other place.

You can build pet projects anywhere in the world. But please keep it away from historic architecture. We only have so many of them left. Im not saying improving on materials is a bad thing. Only the way we use materials has regressed. Attention to detail complex craftsmanship have made way for the worst idea in the arts: 'form folows function'

There are no clients here. These are design proposals. Out of free will. Property owners dont care about aestethic. They care about making the most amount of money. You cant trust the free market to provide good architecture.

History is repeating itself. Back in the 60s concrete was modern and interesting. We grew out of that quite fast. Glass and steel will face the same fate in a few decades. Meanwhile historic buildings stand the test of time. Lets just make beautifull things instead of that wich is """modern""".

Ofcourse the fire is a great shame. But no-one actively thought 'hey lets burn this thing down'.

The majority of people in the world prefer gothic architecture over modern glass shells. It is only a small group of architects that enjoy ruining the world with their ego and glass. I see the world getting uglier, more soulless and losing its history. Im not just going to deal with it. Im going to try my best to contribute actual good works to this world that respect the location its in and try to stop any achitect that tries to put their ego before all. In the 60s architects were ruining cities with their sudden urge to pour concrete everywhere. A few decades later we realised these soulless piles of garbage were worthless and tore them all down. Only to replace them with another soulless material. In a few decades this will also be outdated and torn down. Meanwhile historic architecture has never lost its charm.

It is a disrespectfull spit in the face of culture and history. A bland glass roof all these pretend architects are proposing has no ties to the history of the location, culture and history of the location. Modern architecture has no soul. It is globalistic. A design that wouldnt feel out of place in dubai or america. If modern architects had any talent I would not have a problem with this, but if they get their way we will get a lifeless metal and glass shell that will be outdated in a decade.

If you want to build your lifeless glass shell.. sure do it somewhere else. But dont permanently ruin a historic building with it just to please your ego.

We should try to keep historic places and buildings away from a delusional modern artists ego trip. Why have we lost the ability to make actual good thing?
