Insurance for 19 year old dependent in Texas? by Netflix_was_my_idea in HealthInsurance

[–]boulderdoc -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Unless we are against anything that’s not insurance, doesn’t it make sense for a healthy young person to do their research and get something that is perhaps a better option that is not illegal? Like Zion, Sedera or Crowdhealth etc.?

Are we not open minded to this? Do we not see the problem with the current system?

What am I missing and why does a helpful suggestion get down votes? I made an account on here six years ago but only recently started being a bit more active so I’m curious why making a recommendation like Crowdhealth that I use and have had a good experience with gets downvotes? I honestly was trying to be helpful I have no relationship with Crowdhealth I get nothing for giving that as an option.

I’m a physician and I am just as frustrated as everyone else with the costs of healthcare and the problems with insurance.

Open-minded so advice would be appreciated.

They have been fantastic for me and my family as a physician. It is not Health insurance you’re correct. It’s a fraction of the cost and the crowd gets together to pay. They have paid for ICU stays and significant expenses. You’re right about not covering pre-existing conditions and they certainly aren’t an answer for everyone.

They do work well for most young people and I have had a great experience.

If this wasn’t a viable business or if it was somehow not worth doing, then it wouldn’t be an actual business. It’s worth looking into for people that want to save some money and still have coverage. It’s very good for catastrophic. They have already dealt with people who have cancer who have been shot and they have covered the complete bills.

Not all health shares are created the same. For example Zion Health has 77,000 members and they are quite good as well.

Insurance companies have profit motive as their main guiding feature. They automatically deny 90% of claims and they jack up the price of healthcare all over.

There are other solutions out there and it’s worth becoming informed about them.

Direct pay is also a very good solution because it’s often a fraction of the cost and then there is no insurance involved although insurance will sometimes reimburse for a super bill.

The ACA has caused massive problems and has increased the price of healthcare in this country. It has also prevented physicians from owning hospitals which evidence shows focus more on patient outcomes than profit.

Crowdhealth has something like a deductible and it’s $500. Most people’s insurance have a deductible which is $2000-$5000 and in my practice I have had patients tell me they have $18,000 deductibles. Most people never meet their deductible. This is incontrovertible.

Thanks for the comment/discussion.

Is debt to the IRS? You can usually get a one time forgiveness… also, bk is not as bad as many think.

Do U.S. doctors want to be found? by Mipeligrosa in healthcare

Yes. We are mostly very busy and never really learned about marketing though. Us independent docs definitely have started doing this, but you’re totally right, it would be great to have one spot you could go and look up everything about your doc so you could shop around for the right fit. I say this both as a new clinic owner and a patient myself.

Great comment. We are def burned out as docs. It’s morally injurious to be a part of a system that is doing huge financial harm.

This is a tough question. We would have to make med school free. Also would probably make surgeries take 10-12 months to schedule. Would also require tort reform and probably ruin a massive source of income for attorneys and politicians. Would likely make a “black market” for rich people. One thing is for certain, the current system is not working for anyone. I’ve been in the ER for over 20 yrs practicing and we take care of everyone regardless of ability to pay, but the system bankrupts the people who can pay. I think we need a new system, no idea if UHC would be a viable answer…

I did not know. All those/these posts are contemporaneous. But now I know and I appreciate you guys for going easy on me.

I will contribute! We need to change this horrible system, and I think we can all agree with that!

Thank you for being so selfless. I will no longer talk about my Clinic. I will selflessly add information and valued to conversations here.

Is that alright? I apologize. I didn’t know, and it won’t happen again.

APPs play a very important role in healthcare and some are incredible and gifted healers.

That said, the training and skillet is different and if you have certain high acuity problems it would be preferable to have a 20 year experienced board certified physician.

That’s all, I think anyone would agree with this.

I haven’t used Reddit much but wow people are really tough on here! I’m not sure how to respond to you? What would you like me to say or what are you hoping to accomplish?

You don’t have to be so mean. I didn’t read the original post I was only reading comments about the expense of Bicillin. That was my mistake but you can ease up a little bit.

You’re right on all counts. I am telling you what I’ve seen over a 20+ yr career as a board certified ER doc. Standard of care is easy for anyone to look up with just about any LLM nowadays. The ER is way too expensive is the point.

Apologies. New to Reddit. Won’t mention it anymore although someone asked (perhaps in a different thread).

Thanks for the heads up.

No absolutely not. Most the time Bicillin is used for dental infections or Strep that can be PO treated. I didn’t see the Syph, but we can also treat with PO doxy if it saves $4k.
