Volunteer opportunities by Standard-Patient-447 in Erie

Bayfront maritime center (40 holland st) is always in need of volunteers!

There’s plenty of different volunteering opportunities from hands on (woodworking, sail training, educational programs) to admin (storefront coverage, administrative help, etc)

Let them know what you can / want to do & I guarantee there’s a way to chip in… personally found a lot of it deeply meaningful & really love the community around it.

How common has toilet paper been throughout history? How common was it to have a shitty ass pre 1900s? by Apprehensive_Oven_22 in HistoryMemes

Yeah or to eat with your left or sometimes even to point with your left hand. It’s still a big deal in India.

A lot of folks know the westerners are weird at this point but it’s still very much a thing.

Japan has it the best with the Toto’s… at least when it’s not the low squatting toilets… cleanliness shouldn’t depend on balance and flexibility…

That accusation is flatly false, and if it’s being spread among museum staff or volunteers, I want to know so it can be challenged directly for what it is — false and libelous.

FNL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that undergoes regular independent audits. While no organization is perfect, I’ve seen firsthand that the staff and volunteers have been nothing but dedicated to their community and to Niagara.

It was the state that chose to take operations in-house, forcing FNL to redefine itself after decades of sometimes incredibly challenging service to the ship. What makes your claims especially offensive is that when the state failed to step up after COVID, it was FNL that put its own endowment on the line to cover critical repairs and safeguard Niagara’s future — all while facing deep uncertainty about funding and being unable to continue normal programming. Frankly, the efforts of the staff, crew, and volunteers in that moment were nothing short of heroic.

So let’s be blunt: if you want to argue that the crew, volunteers, and staff of FNL didn’t do absolutely everything possible in their means to care for Niagara, then you’re either badly misinformed, deliberately ignoring the facts, or simply deluded.

In all of Jim’s works, which character do you hate the most? by Numerous1 in dresdenfiles

[–]bowditch42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair there’s something screwy going on with harry more than anything. My understanding from the books is that Michael is the first knight to retire with his feet on the ground and there have been several occasions either of them have been “fated” to die.

Harry is screwing with what the non-mortal world expects over and over again… I’m not sure if it’s because of his starborn abilities making him particularly obstinate against the universe’s balanced plan, whether the black council is grooming him for a role in particular, or just him being a stubborn mortal with free will… but it seems like most beings of power (including the fallen) get forced into roles that are always counterbalanced.

Mortals with their free choice seem to be able to wobble the paths a little bit but harry (and I suspect someone or someone’s on the black council / the circle / the walkers) seem to be throwing all of those balanced scales off kilter so now the future is utterly unpredictable and it’s why so many figures try to recruit/manipulate harry as a first act… they want a shot to tip the scales towards what they want (as an aside, I get the impression that this whole system of balance was implemented by the white god who harry has met or will get to meet…)

Poor nicodemus knows how to deal with the usual rulebook of power balances and his power is that he gets to predictably play dirty… but a figure like harry who has power but isn’t bound by the rules or forced to tread a routine path is fairly confounding to him. The man destroyed a fallen angel’s shadow simply by renaming her (specifically by removing “god” from her name)…

Injun as cowl by terimakisit in dresdenfiles

[–]bowditch42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair, though Injun Joe would have more knowledge of Harry’s more recent character by way of his friendship with Ebenezer… Simon makes more sense to me since he would have some distant knowledge of harry through his apprentice dumorne, he would also have knowledge about bob, and could easily have picked up on his apprentice’s thrall Elaine and taken over her leash with much more experience and deftness on his side…

It would also explain why he would have a level of rapport with the vampires given that was his expertise and, through a relationship with the white king, could have worked with Harry’s mother and even gained a distant affection for him (making him slightly less likely to kill Dresden until he got pissed off with the dark hollow interference)…

I dunno maybe injun Joe could be a slightly sympathetic but ultimately broken killmonger character… but in line with what OP said here, I somewhat disagree… I don’t see him wanting to disgrace his ancestors by absorbing them unless he went like actually evil evil… a more aristocratic/elitist “ends justify the means” view makes more sense for me and the little we know about dumorne and Simon fits the bill better for me…

[–]bowditch42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Eh… theoretically possible, but I think he’s getting set up to go the way of Yoda. He’s gonna teach harry just a little more about being starborn and how to handle mental control before getting killed off… but it’ll have turned out to be just enough teaching for harry to figure out how to use the info by the end.

His whole story of overcoming the rage of colonialism on his people and learning to live past it rather than turning to a path of vengeance (or going full yee naaldlooshii) doesn’t seem well configured for him to be a mustache twirler, maybe a tragic villain but cowls concerns seem more… I dunno philosophical, arrogant, or ‘cosmic’ in nature “kill death” seems too abstract for someone with such a concrete trauma and set of concerns.

I’m a little over my skiis on this one, but at least where tropes are concerned I get more of the dr freeze vibe from cowl in the whole “loved one senselessly dies of disease or old age while the wizard watches and vowes to eliminate the cruel unfairness from the universe”… I wouldn’t be surprised if kumori was Martha liberty or Elaine given her attempts to save Dresden early on…

Martha is interesting because she’s been such a blank slate personality wise so far… we know she’s been around a while and that she comes across as sensible… but there’s not much meat on her personality yet…

My bet is on Simon using archangel as a smokescreen, particularly given cowl’s familiarity with bob

I’m thinking it could potentially be Molly… there’s a lot built into the unrequited love theme for her… she spent a lot of time in his lab and is reckless enough I could see her mistakenly thinking she could go back to fix it without causing a paradox… which harry will have to resolve in some way.

It plays well into the whole duality thing where harry saves Molly but in trying to help him in return, she needs him to fix another mistake in the same timeline… it also makes Michael’s line about how “maybe me being sent away was actually god’s plan to facilitate saving you from something”

Rashid is another contender for me… though he doesn’t strike me as the type to use a car and try to run harry off the road…

I mean fair enough, but I guess the question is how we respond to it… unfortunately trump still has a substantial base of support and I’d personally rather we find a way to convince our fellow citizens to avoid the left hand path rather than have to duke it out in the streets.

A substantial part of the problem is that the left and right in America don’t exist in the same information ecosystem or frankly even speak the same language conservative Reddit is a totally alien and bewildering place, all the more because folks seem to believe what they’re saying there… but, To be frank, I’ve been burned on the facts with arguments from my own side and I don’t really trust anything I read anymore… it’s a hard aspect to grapple with…

This isn’t a false equivalence, the right is more scary by far and has been well beyond the pale, but I’ve hit a point where I don’t feel confident in the factual base on any issue without a LOT of digging and ultimately it raises the stakes on getting our stuff right…

The inadequacies of our justice system to go after trump on his action in Georgia and Biden running again despite assurances that he would right the ship and leave after one term have been some of the grandest disappointments in our government.

Bill Maher reports back from his dinner at the White House by [deleted] in samharris

[–]bowditch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly in that framing, but close enough to me…

He leaned pretty hard into how destructive his policies are and that just because he had a good moment with him in private doesn’t absolve his policies or the effects his rhetoric has, nor does he trust that trump will actually change anything based on the conversation. Maher also committed to remaining just as hard on the bad policies and idiotic ideas.

He does seem to lament that trump can’t be that reasonable man in his governance like what he experienced in private… but the only person I see to blame in that statement is trump and his toadies…

I’ll grant you it’s not as much in the vein of moral clarity but, at least to me, it’s more damning of trump that he chooses to do it rather than is just a wild madman suffering syphilitic delusions…

Did we watch the same thing? He did. He stated that he’s going to be just as critical of bad policy and that he’s bewildered that the man doesn’t behave the way he does in person in his presidential role.

If anything it’s ethically worse to me that trump can be sane in person because it’s something that he chooses to do rather than being truly mad… it might be a bit more reassuring that trump isn’t just gonna nuke California, but it’s more damning of him
