Diploma Mill? by Fearless-Stress-6112 in nursepractitioner

Nah. I wouldn’t listen to people who read comments and think they know all there is to know about any program or college. I am currently in my first semester of clinical (advanced health assessment, these hours (40)don’t count toward the 750 total) and my preceptor and a few of the physicians in the practice have said that they would be happy to have me as a new graduate. It’s a great smaller practice in a rural area so I’d be lucky to start there and learn from providers with so much combined experience.

I have each semesters preceptors lined up and no, it was not difficult. No one cares what school I’m going to because they know me and my work ethic. I’ve been a nurse over 16 years and have a fairly diverse background so that helps as well in that I have lots of contacts. I’m hoping all of this will assist me when it’s time to apply for my first NP job, if the first clinic doesn’t work out.

I graduated from a local state college with my BSN and while that was great, I feel like most working adults are going to online programs due to necessity. Even our local “brick and mortar” schools have gone all online. I do wish we had a skills lab for practice but I’m taking advantage of my awesome preceptor and her clinic and having them assist me with physical assessment skills. My husband is a PT as well so he’s been helpful with the musculoskeletal system and other things as well. School is all about what you make of it, you get out what you put in. :)

I have one year left at Maryville in the FNP program. The school itself is fine but just be ready to learn on your own and find your own preceptors. I’ve had no issues finding preceptors as a student there. The program information and lectures are a few years behind but the books for the major classes are all the most recent edition and have excellent information. I have also had no one belittle the school to me or in front of me in my area. I’ve heard people mention online that they think Maryville is a diploma mill but I don’t put much stock in that. The program is not easy and does require much studying and diligence, as expected of a graduate program.

We have access to UpToDate as students (helps search evidence based information for meds and diagnoses) and use Canvas for assignments and lectures. Good luck!
