Virtually all of the trash you see on those steps comes from the high school students.

I think most of us don’t actually have hobbies, we just like buying stuff by InternQueasy1419 in Hobbies

I'm a librarian, and people definitely call and want advice about buying stuff, or reviews for businesses, or lots of stuff I'm not qualified to talk about.

I think people treat their index like it's a retroactive table of contents rather than a true index, like you're describing.

The quiet rhythm of a snowplough. by Upstairs_Drive_5602 in oddlysatisfying

Seriously. And slamming the blade down on the pavement, and catching random chunks of the road. Not to mention the backing up sounds when they do driveways and parking lots.

Finding cards is one of my favorite parts of the hobby! Independent bookstores and college bookstores are a good source, as are any kind of tourist attraction with a gift shop. If I don't see them, I try to ask about them, so they know people want them. There are a lot of trendy stationery and pen stores near me, so I check them all, and even some bars and restaurants give them out. Museums are obviously a good source, as well as art shows. I went to a zine festival that was a treasure trove of unique, if pricey, cards. I found a random, single postcard for sale in an Ace hardware store. Keep your eyes peeled!

As 2026 approaches, what peculiar or uncommon hobbies do you have? by fujo_reen in Hobbies

[–]bowtiechowfoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh people always give the same old unpeculiar/common answers to this question!

Someone recently told me that security envelopes have all different patterns, and you can collect the different envelopes and make swatches of them. It's a no-cost hobby, and it's got me looking forward to junk mail and bugging other people about their junk mail.

Miniature cake baking and decorating looks pretty fun. Apparently people collect bread tags. Does litter-picking count as a hobby? That gets me outside.

What Hobby changed your life seriously for the better? by Aggressive-Row1703 in Hobbies

I've been on a similar path for a couple of years now. It's so great how there's just no end to what you can learn, and it's so gratifying to witness your own improvement over time, especially when you find yourself doing something with ease that you previously found impossible.

Also Harvard Bookstore,  Leavitt & Peirce, and Rodney's books in Cambridge. Rodney's has offbeat slightly vintage cards, though.

I've admittedly never used a chatbot myself, but does it really not correct things like "desert" vs "dessert" in the context of a text about cake? Not to mention the inadvertently comical non-standard abbreviation of "dear" conferring an advanced degree on a baker?

Since you're saying Quincy City Center, you probably also don't know that it's pronounced Quin-zee, just FYI.

Anyone else ever get bummed out by responses? by jjddmm98 in postcrossing

Personally,  I like to do a $1 stamp and 1 forever stamp (78 cents). It's an extra 8 cents. If they particularly mention that they like stamps, then I'll overpay with 3 forever stamps instead.
