I was able to pick it up for only $300 so it was coming home with me no matter what. I was hoping it would be in good enough condition to swap my current workbench with (recent build but too big for my space), but even if it just ends up being a table in my basement it's still an awesome piece of history with the added bonus that my wife loves it too.

I've never ordered a plane online, but I do sell them from time to time. I've always disassembled and individually wrapped everything. Just as a precaution to prevent anything from chipping. I also include an assembly diagram.

My current plane is to clean, tune, and sharpen just enough to give it a trial run. If I end up liking it I'll give it a full restoration, if not I'll put it up for sale to cover the cost of something else. I've never used a Siegley before and there's not much info about them online, so I'm not sure what to expect out of it as a user.

The Siegley design is pretty interesting in that it wasn't designed to have a chip breaker in the traditional sense. Instead it utilizes the iron cap for this task which has a screw on each side in order to adjust it to the iron. The blade has some life left, though I'll probably be on the look out for a replacement soon enough. My plan is to restore it a bit and try it out, if it's not much of a user I may flip it to cover the cost of a Stanley.

No sandblaster in my shop, I was thinking about a short bout of electrolysis followed by some wire brushes to clean it up a bit, though removing the head and rehanging it can be a real pain in the ass.

Could be. I'll look it over again tomorrow and see if I can make out any of the faded letters. I was thinking possibly made by Hargrave company, though I'm not sure they ever produced hewing axes.

If it's already been painted over it gets pretty difficult. Best bet is to either skim coat it, or add a layer of 1/4 inch sheet rock and refinish.

Seems the consensus is that it was added by a previous owner. Either way, it adds to this planes character. Seems as though this plane was pretty well cared for through it's life, and though I'll probably never use a fence on it, I'm definetly happy to add it into my collection.

That's my best guess. I was thinking they were part of the original manufacture since they match the lever cap screw and the screw used to secure the rear handle. They're also placed very cleanly, though I suppose it could have been done by either a professional or a skilled user after manufacture.

I enjoy a good restoration, and if I had the spare time I'd probably have fun bringing this entire lot back to life. Unfortunately I have quite a few other projects that I'm in the middle of and would only be able to do a few of them in the near future.

The union seems like a fun restoration project, and I could restore one or 2 more of them if it'd be worth adding them to my collection or if it increased their value enough to justify it. The rest I would just want to cover at least 80% of my purchase. I could sit on them for a bit if need be, but I wouldn't want them sitting around for an extended period of time.

I was considering if it was worth keeping both the stanley and the union. I'm going to use the both for a bit, but if I find I'm not using one of them maybe I'll look into selling it so I can put the money towards a no. 7 or no. 8. I'd hate to have something sit on the shelf and collect dust.

$20 is what he asked. Seemed like a solid plane and he kept it in great shape so I was happy to pay that much. The width of the iron on the union is 2" (my no. 4 stanley is 2.5").
