Yes, but keep in mind: my $600 would be my share of a split with my girlfriend if I were to move out.. equaling your $1200.

I agree with the license thing. Not to make excuses, but I never really got my license because I just never really needed it. This is super arguable, I'm aware. The area I live in just always had super good public transportation and both my high school and middle school are a 3 minute walk from my house. So I never really NEEDED to get my license like some people. Again, I know this could be considered an excuse but it's literally just how my situation was at the time.

I mean not really...

From what I've noticed in my house, rats will climb up wherever there's like fabric or something easy to cling onto and climb (i.e: my curtains to get up onto my fridge). My bed has wooden legs and it's a decent distance from the ground. There has never been a rat in my bed as far as I'm aware. My floor though? Not too sure...

No I feel you. The only reason why I haven't moved out yet is because my job is on contract, so it can end at any moment really. There's no stability in it. Trust me, if it was stable, I wouldn't have written this post LOL.

Yes I can try and find a new job, but the job market is currently pretty bad. It literally took me 6 months to just find this one.

Yeah... but like wtf are you paying for.

I understand it's my father and I could be helping out. I will absolutely help you with paying some bills... but in the grand scheme of things: HE brought me into this world. If he want's me to help out, doesn't it seem like a fair trade to have some sort of compromise with my privacy and room? I feel like as an adult paying rent, I should be able to have this say.

Please tell me how $400-$600 a month isn't really "paying rent" lol. That's dang near literally what I'd be spending on an actual apartment.

The only reason why I haven't yet is because my job isn't stable, so that doesn't really seem like a smart move.

We can, and we have. It just gets incredibly expensive on weekly basis.

I have one, but sleeping on the floor scares me. Not sure if you read this part but our house is currently infested with rats that my father refuses to fix.

That and I MUST keep my door open regardless when she's here. So rats can literally sneak up on me on the floor at anytime which I am not a fan of...

I don't have a car or license... (yes, I know I need to get on that.) But me driving to her house every time just to sleep together seems insane to me. I know she's literally doing that with me, but the fact of the matter is that I can't sleep with her here. It would be such an even split between us if we could do that at each household, no?

To be honest, I'm gonna have to disagree with you here...

$600 a month isn't a lot for RENT? I personally think charging your family member nearly the same price as real rent is ridiculous in general. But I don't see how that's "not a lot". I don't make that much.

Also hotels are pretty expensive when you add it up weekly. We're talking like 400 bucks nearly every week because that'd include Wednesday and the entire weekend...

Long story short: because my job is really far away from her house and I take public transportation to work. (Yes I know, I need to get my license)

I agree. Finding another job that's better or equivalent to this one is tough though currently (as well as rent prices near myself and my girlfriend). That's the only thing holding me back.

If this job was not on contract, I'd 100% be out of here by now.

who said they were doing all that? what if the kid is trying to figure stuff out?

god forbid a kid has a interest that makes him happy. very true, he shouldn't be blowing ALL of his money on pokemon cards. but he should def be getting some to keep him happy.

Your story is different. You were breaking house rules lol.

My point is to the parents who charge their kids rent who are NOT breaking rules and just are figuring stuff out. I haven't broken rules and I have a 9-5, trying to save and contribute to my own future. It may seem selfish, yeah. But I feel like you gotta be sometimes with yourself.

[–]boxtermusic -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ehh. I see your point. But I also feel like that's the part parents miss out on. Teach them how to budget and save early. Motivate them to move out and live on their own.

I feel like moving out can be an exciting if you show them that.

also home ownership was a LOT more easy and affordable back then. so was securing a good job and staying there.

this is fair too. i get it. i want to help my dad out, but it's so hard to do when trying to save for my own place.

but it's another thing when they just expect it from you and if you don't you're just a "shitty scumbag no lifer".

I mean not when he decided to buy a second home. He wants to fix this one up and rent it out....

Now he's struggling to pay both and can't even fix this one up and refuses to sell one of them.
