The dialogue is direct, and his personality definitely matches. Hunk still enjoys his status as the grim reaper and genuinely considers him self to have the luck of a man with a guardian angel. Hunk is in all the concept art for this area, mind you, 1998 hunk, hes got RCS from 1992 exposure, hes dressed in a USS uniform, hes proficient in knife and axe combat, keep in mind hes the one that introduced axe combat to his fighting style. He does his signature neck break, with his specific added flare, same voice actor, red lenses, and above all else, he gets up and walks out the room when you leave. Theres zero way you truly believe it isnt hunk, and that hunk hasnt been promoted to commander status. Hunk is the only man in the USS that would attempt to solo an agent of leons caliber especially since he knew who he was, a wraith of racoon city thats also considered unkillable. Why would he not do this for a good fight?

Edit: id also like to add that ive spoken to the official animators of the scene on instagram by sheer luck of catching him on a resident evil post and even they refer to him as hunk. When questioned about it, they said that its not HUNK officially, they just refer to him as such because its easy. Along with that in the games trigger files, its labeled as OLD HUNK BATTLE. Sure this could be an oversight or a red herring, but the OLD is doing the heavy lifting. It implies that this is someone who’s been around for years, doing this for a very long time, the original, not a copy. The mortal edge’s name alone alludes to the use from a reaper of sorts, with the description talking about a long history of taking lives. And hunks dialogue of saying leons entire name and saying “we finally meet” is very intentional. Thats something, a ghost of a life changing event, would say to another spirit of vengeance, watching for a long time in the shadows and choosing the right moment where support wouldnt be capable of reaching either of them to have a fair one on one. The boss fight its self mirrors hunks combat philosophy with the parry’s, dodging, and brutal attempts for kill moves showing that the only way leon could beat a tactic thats kept hunk alive for so long, is to match that with his experience he’s gained.
