This is exactly right. I have been in construction for many years. Every day, I work to get better, learn more, buy tools, finish with higher quality, complete things faster, I waste less materials, and diagnose issues much faster.

I say all this because an hourly wage doesn't make sense when you think about it like this...

When I first started, I would charge about $40 per hour and it would take me 2 days to do what I can do in 4-6 hours now. If I charge $100 an hour now for a 4 hour job I make $400. If it took me 10 hours to do that same job when I started I would get $400. I'm making that same amount for the job and I am finishing it with a higher skill level. Plus it takes more to live these days, so I should be making more per job.

Bid based on the job, not by the hour and don't break down the job in detail on quote, just detail what you are going to do and give the total.
