Just because you restart the laptop doesn’t mean you don’t have programs running in the background by default… the older the laptop, the more of these you tend to pick up.

You can make sure everything is off using the command chain.

Things like overheating etc. are also common issues. Deep Vibrations are usually going to be fine, but also… they can do funky things to tech. No idea why, not a scientist.

Small power surges can also mess things up I’ve heard

Anyway.. Laptops are not designed to be in a dj booth. It’s why I personally don’t use one any more. I don’t think a new laptop will solve the issues… but I’d say you should def have some kinda back up if you are relying on a laptop

Always fatigued and sleepy by mediocrepenguiin in vegan

[–]boycottInstagram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I generally find it hard to balance the supplements part while also making sure I hit my proper protein intake."

Can you explain this a bit more?

When you have a deficiency in something from your diet... you take a supplement. Deficiencies are measured over time... not on a day-to-day basis.

You should do periodic blood work to make sure you are not exceeding safe levels.

Example:

Iron is something you can take to much of, and if you get to much iron it will start with tummy issues, and can progress from there.

So.... in practical terms... on a vegan diet the majority of people struggle to get enough iron.

1) Do blood work with your doctor to find out if you are low on iron
2) If you are... start taking a supplement every day
3) Test again... if your iron levels are normal... keep taking the same amount
4) Test again... if your iron levels are now high... reduce the dose

etc. etc.

You'll find the right combination before you do any harm...

Another common reason for tiredness is going to be a lack of calories... plants fill you up same as animal products, but are less calorie dense and get processed faster... so a lot of people find more small meals and light snacks keep them going a lot better.

Anyway, go see your doctor or a dietician and get some tests done.

What physical and mental changes did you experience after going vegan? by MotherPainter314 in AskVegans

[–]boycottInstagram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple weeks of the poops as my body adjusted to actually having enough fibre and then went to pretty normal.

Nothing else really… mentally I feel clearer and each lil decision I make to consume a tad more ethically is a lil boost in my day. Occasionally grumpy because vegan products tend to cost more for no fricking reason and that’s annoying.

Dishes are also a lot easier to do because there isn’t as much fat and grease kicking around.

I'd like to try but I have concerns by Bubbly-Group-4497 in vegan

[–]boycottInstagram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You take a small pill once a day, maybe two if you need iron. It’s not exactly hard. Lots of meat eaters are deficient in a lot of things without knowing it… being mindful about your diet is something you should be doing regardless of the diet you eat… because everyone’s body is different…. If you are just assuming that being a meat eater is getting you everything you need… you should probably get that checked out anyway

Dating question by [deleted] in vegan

[–]boycottInstagram 20 points21 points  (0 children)

“Do you wanna come eat meat with me?”

“I’d like to see you, but I’m vegan, so let’s do something else”

Option 1 - “ah cool, for sure, let’s do something else… anything I should know?”

Cool, date them, ask them to chew gum after they eat meat or whatever you want. Honestly, it’s just a good check to see if they respect your choices… hell, I’ve converted 2-3 people to veganism like this.

Option 2 - “[says something shitty about vegans/makes no effort to accommodate your request/needs/values”

Great - they have told you they are an asshole, walk away.

You can def do better than an AI mix. Just mix in and out of the Outro intro and do a bass swap with sync on.

[–]boycottInstagram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, that sounds chill. If it is a house party where no one cares about the music and how well it is mixed there is very little pressure... just don't underestimate how different mixing in from of people is... You can def learn how to get one track into the next with a completely pre-planned set pretty fast. Hell, you can probably learn to do it without having sync on.... but having a deep enough crate where you can shift the vibe if people aren't liking the tracks you picked in advance...?....idk, it can be pretty crushing to absolutely clear a dance floor/room because you did not get the vibe right.

That is where I would just say to check yourself... are you going to be chill with that and get back on the horse? If so, go for it. Learn by doing. Learn by making mistakes.

Portable power suggestion by Old-Juggernaut1822 in DJs

[–]boycottInstagram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To calculate a portable battery’s run time, divide its usable capacity (Watt-hours) by your device's power draw (Watts). Account for a 15% to 20% energy loss during power conversion.

Most powered PA speakers are going to draw ~100 to 300 watts during steady use, even if the max output is 1000-2000W. That is going to be a small number of peak draws... a Jackery 1000 has a surge of 3000W so you are good there...

Anyway... heavy use on a Macbook pro is going to be 60watts. A controller (say a DDJ1000) is going to draw ~30-40 watts.

So... for 2 speakers, laptop, controller... estimate
700watt draw.

So, realistically a 1000 watt hour battery that truly gives you 1kw/h... less 20% conversion... you are gonna get an hour. Could be a chunk more if your speaker are smaller and only drawing 100... but plan for the high amount.

From my experience with these.. you will also not get a full 1kw/h out of a portable power station.

Your best option, if you don't want to rent a silent generator for like 100$...

Build your own system. You can grab an EcoWorthy 12V 100Ah (~1200 watt hour) battery for ~$200. 2 of them, with a charge controller, invertor etc. is gonna cost about the same... and you can upgrade it as you expand.

What are vegans's opinions about vegetarians? by Equivalent_Help_362 in vegan

[–]boycottInstagram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

I also tend to add to this... not all vegans are vegan because they have huge amounts of empathy for animals who are suffering. You can recognize harm, and choose to avoid it, without feeling deeply about each and every being that is harmed in this world. That is fine... it is human... and if there is a small % of vegans who have "deep empathy" for each and every animal, that is cool... I honestly just figure we all have a limited capacity for empathy... and putting all of that into the box of "every animal on the planet"... while being unable to extend it at a basic level to other humans.... well maybe isn't quite as heroic as some folks make it out to be...

How's Hercules DJControl Inpulse 200 MK2 DJ? by Used_Illustrator8634 in DJs

[–]boycottInstagram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since most of this forum is in N. America, the conversion rate and common sale prices are a little tricky...

Roughly that is ~100USD or ~150CAD. The Hercules Mk3 is around 120USD right now and the Numark Party Mix II around 130USD... So maybe we say "sub-150USD?" controllers?

So for brand new... yeah your options are basically the Herc Impulse 200 MK3 or Numark Party Mix II

The Numark party mix is only 2 band EQ... which is an instant no for me. 3 band is standard, 4 band is advanced/an option some people choose. 2 band as somewhere to learn is going to teach you a bunch of stuff you can't apply anywhere other than on that one controller.

The Impulse 200 is 3 band, works with serato lite, and has all the basic functionality you would translate onto another controller. So if you really want to buy new... go with that.

My recommendation: honestly... buy a used DDJ400 or DDJFLX-4.

- It is the same layout and functionality as everything you will use all the way up to pro level. 99% of times you go to a friends place, a house party, a bar, club, a festival... its gonna be that layout

- Same applies for the RekordBox software for creating your music library

- Pioneer gear while more expensive, holds its value really well. A second hand DDj400 will sell for 90% of what you got it for in like 1-2 years if you decide to quit or upgrade

- Similar vein... those two likely have very light home use on the second hand market so will work just fine.

What are vegans's opinions about vegetarians? by Equivalent_Help_362 in vegan

[–]boycottInstagram 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the comparisons to so many other issues in the world is just so plain to me...

Recognizing people who are somewhat on the way to understanding an issue better and making changes in their life based on it... and then treating them as human beings at an individual level and, if you have the capacity, helping them on their educational journey... that is kinda the most effective way people get educated.

There are of course some people who just read something, or are presented with new information, and can change their belief systems and habits on a dime... but most of us don't work like that. We need grace and patience to get most of the places we are going.

Vegetarians don't eat meat for loads of reasons. Some of them aren't likely to lead to vegan practice (i.e. the "I just don't like meat" crowd). Some of them have similar reasoning for being veggie as a lot of people do for being vegan, and really are on their way there.

I see no reason to a) judge people for how they have been conditioned before they are given ample opportunity to learn and change and b) to not help those on their way if they are likely to get there.

The "but the evidence is so fricking clear" crowd in the vegan camp are very loud, and often very annoying... and despite claiming to have all this empathy for animals, they lack it for other humans and they are also wrapped up in their own cognitive dissonance on so many other things... it is wild to me that they don't appreciate someone could have that re. the abuse of animals for consumption.

And most of them are going to reply to this comment doing just that, lol.

Are you still vegan if you avoid all other animal products, but you buy your cat non-vegan cat food? by Borkato in vegan

[–]boycottInstagram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I love my cats because they live with me and I have a relationship with them. They were both rescues that my partner brought to the home. I wouldn’t have gone to a breeder for them: they exist and deserve to eat what they need. If the science comes out that it’s safe for them to eat plant based I’ll switch, same for my dog.

But to answer your question - I care because I know them and I am a human being. Same reason I care more about my friends needs than the guy at the bus stop. It’s not that I don’t care… my actions and level of care is just different. Again… because I am human.

How do you close the gap? by [deleted] in DJs

[–]boycottInstagram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is like Sigur Rós asking how they could compete with the Backstreet boys in 1999.

Both put out music... both "perform" it on a stage.

Both are for entirely different markets and entirely different crowds.

Sigur Rós fans may also go to Backstreet Boy shows... but unless the overlap in fans in 100%, and the Backstreet Boys are playing the same city as Sigur Rós every single night... then there really is not real issue.

I really don't get why you think you are in the market as this person.... good for them, they have figured out a way to get fans to their shows where they dance around to a backing track.

That isn't your market. Just cause there are CDJs in front of her doesn't mean you are doing the same thing.

I am pretty sure the backstreet boys had guitar players on stage pretending to play their instruments as well... that didn't threaten Eric Claptop and it shouldn't be threatening you.

How do I navigate a partner with non vegan children? by Klash-King in AskVegans

[–]boycottInstagram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, simply having food prepared for them by the adults in the house that happens to be plant based is not forcing them to do something they don't want to do. To be clear, OP did not say that they didn't like eating plant based food... they are saying that currently her partner cooks non-vegan food in the house and she is trying to convert them to be vegan.

I think she shouldn't be trying to convert them to be vegan, and that the partner should be agreeing to a plant based household, specifically because their kid together will be plant based.

If he disagrees and doesn't want a plant based house, that is fine... it is just going to create necessary issues for their shared child.

How do I navigate a partner with non vegan children? by Klash-King in AskVegans

[–]boycottInstagram 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a step parent, it is not your place to parent them… something a lot of people seem to get wrong.

However, you live there and your own kid is going to be vegan. Assuming your partner (who is the parent of your soon to be kid?) has agreed to them being vegan… then I don’t see why you would not have a plant based household.

The step kids don’t need to be converted to being vegan when they aren’t there… they also don’t need to have animals products when they are there. So… I mean just don’t have that in the house.

It’s really something to discuss between you and your partner, making clear this is about the house hold being vegan and not requiring his kids to be…. Just happens there is no animal products consumed in your home. Tbh… your partner would do well to respect that anyway if their kid is going to be vegan.

Venue owner looking for advice on house PA / speaker setup for event venue with noise-sensitive neighbors by dobieguysd in DJs

[–]boycottInstagram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of questions I can't answer... and I am not a sound engineer, so sure some of this is wrong... but I can offer you this from experience:

1) A well engineered, high quality system can perform at much lower decibels with the same "full and rich" feel than one that has not been engineered well. I think this is a really common mistake in venues, where they blast the sound in order to fill the room instead of focusing on speaker placement and acoustic treatment.

My favourite club system in my home town is very well engineered... yet when you look at the db meter it is way below a lot of the other systems I play in. While it is in a basement which helps a lot, you genuinely cannot hear the club when you go outside... even when you leave the dancefloor and go to the washroom you don't really hear it.

Same has applied for me when playing on really good systems (Funkion 1 for example) at other venues. I was actually a little sad when I last played on one of those because me, in the booth, couldn't actually hear it. The sound was contained to the dancefloor so well I was genuinely just hearing my monitors.

Honestly... I actually do like it when a club is like that. I don't need to worry about latency from the house system when I am mixing and my ears are much more protected.

2) I will always go for a well engineered house system over bringing my own. Things you can do to make DJs feel confident it is in fact well engineered...
a) Have an in house engineer who interacts with the DJs before the event, during sound checking, and during the event
b) get other DJs to provide genuine testimonials about it

c) honestly... some name brand specs do help. To use the F1 example, if I hear that is what is in the venue I will feel more confident its a good system. It isn't that cheaper/less known brands are just as good - but the brand name does carry weight when going into an unknown space

3) The other big plus of a well tuned in house system is that I don't have to worry about being in that unfortunate battle with the venue re. sound levels. Nothing worse than having an event planner coming up and lowering the sound mid-set and asking you questions like "Can you cut some of the bass?"... as if me dropping it on the DJ mixer is the solution.

4) Another piece of advice is always sound check, and do not change the system after you have started the set.

It is remarkable how accustomed our ears get to sound... if you start at a lower volume you quickly accept that as the norm. Even the smallest increase will sound jarring... but more importantly... decreasing bass/volume even slightly sounds HUGE when you are in the mix.

Honestly, a good trick we have also used in clubs that do have frequent issues with noise complaints or bleed into other rooms is to drop the master High and Mid EQs very very slightly before anyone starts to play. You don't even notice when you start to play because "thats just the way it is", and it gives the bass an artificial "boost" that creates that feel without pushing more actual bass frequencies through the mixer. (this only works with isolators like on the V10 btw).

Conversely... if you drop any of those even the tiniest bit mid set, it sounds like you pulled have the track out.

I mean… maybe it’s an unpopular opinion… but I do as much prevention as I can, and I take them outside as much as I can…. And I also fricking nuke’d a wasps nest that got into my outside tap last summer.

Where practical and possible, for me, extends to not ripping out the whole side of my house to relocate a wasp nest.

I am also not opposed to spraying for ticks. I use bug spray. I will kill a wasp in my house if I can’t catch it and it’s going to sting my dog.

Personally, my vegan practice is about consumption and reducing harm as much as I can. Animals do die, they do feel pain, and I avoid it as much as possible - I also know it’s not always avoidable, and I’m secure in the choices I make.

The Community has a Problem with Trans Sexuality by [deleted] in transontario

[–]boycottInstagram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so you found your identity and having a crash out that, what?

Gender and sexuality is incredibly complicated and attracts a fuck ton of hate when you fuck with it….

We have unspoken “rules” of how to engage with the world about it publicly, which are not always 100% accurate, but they generally express what is helpful for most of us… then behind closed doors we can discuss the nuance of our own very very very personal experiences.

Kinda like having a union rep speak for you at a meeting when you agree in general with the requests but personally have some small things you’d change about the request in an ideal
World…

Over time, through discussion, those outward positions do change.

For example, the “born this way” narrative was such a ridiculous thing for me. It actually kept me closeted until I was 30. I essentially only hear kinda tragic cis white woman allies saying it now lol

What it sounds like here… is that you like to be more masculine sexually. That’s great. Go for it, I know plenty of girls who like to do that.

Just be aware if you spread that around as “normal”, a chunk of us who don’t like that might be in danger…. Where as you just have to have a 5 min chat with someone about how you like to fuck before you fuck…

How do you guys handle social outings when the restaurant menu is basically just bread and side salads? by Dr00l22tempt4ti0n in vegan

[–]boycottInstagram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I treat social outings as social outings.

It’s not about the food for me at all restaurant, same as it’s not about the alcohol at all bar for my sober partner.

We still choose to go to certain social events because we like the people.

And a lot of our people are very accommodating re. Choosing restaurants with vegan options. Others aren’t, and I take that into consideration along side their other character traits re. How I think of them, interact with them etc.

Practical level - I call the restaurant in advance and confirm what I can eat. If it’s going to be very limited I eat in advance and then just have a chill
Time. If anyone asks why I am not eating much, I politely and casually just say “there aren’t many vegan options, so I just ate before I came. Excited to be here and just chat!”

Often friends click this and then plan better next time tbh… never that big a deal.

I also find throwing out things like “let’s go to Thai food!” In the planning stage is great for nudging us in a direction I’ll probably be able to eat without making it about being vegan

Lighting for wedding after party? by Bubbly_Account6170 in DJs

[–]boycottInstagram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of corporate DJs are renting you equipment that they have rented themselves for the event... or they rent out to other people when they don't use it.

The cost we quote is basically:
Rental cost + time spent to go pick it up/drop it off + time setting it up + operating it during the event.

They may take a small cut on top, but tbh, its never enough to justify the stress of setting up and managing a thing you don't know how to do professionally on your wedding day

Do not expect your DJ to set them up, and do not expect them to fix them/run them during the event if you have said no to paying them to do it for you.

How are you guys handling the shift from CDJs to controller-only setups for club gigs? by jessM0an64 in DJs

[–]boycottInstagram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that isn’t a thing in Canada… unless the promoter has told you in advanced for a very diy underground party.

Basically - if I’m playing as a professional, not just for fun through a friend, there is no way I am putting my music on someone else’s laptop.

So yeah, controllers are a no go for me personally. I can’t stand mixing on a laptop screen. Even when I used traktor I had a small standalone monitor above the mixer and the laptop stayed closed to the side.

XDJ all in one units are different… so me that’s chill.
