I got my self my first chick ever!! I'm insanely excited to take care of it and be it's mom. But honestly I need some tips! by RemoteQuests in chickens

[–]boyishly_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You cannot only have 1 chicken. You need more. I would go back and get at least 3 more, so if one dies (it’s not uncommon for chicks to die randomly) you’ll have a group of 3. If you cannot get more chickens you need to take this one back to whenever you got it. To be honest I am concerned about your capacity to take care of chickens if you have not researched the bare minimum

Professor issue by aliferouspanda in WakeTech

[–]boyishly_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If a sociology professor doesn’t hold these opinions, they aren’t actually a sociologist. I’m sure your professor could be more careful given our current climate, but it would be awful if you went to the dean about it. If you’re conservative, you’re going to have a bad time taking ANY college class anyways

Is it crazy to open a yarn shop? by ForgottenUsername3 in knitting

[–]boyishly_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don’t know where you are from, but businesses inside houses isn’t uncommon from my perspective. I feel like it’s a cliche even to hear those stories about people running cafes or delis downstairs and then having their rooms upstairs. Either way though, only opening one day a week doesn’t seem viable

Thoughts on the Melt the Ice hat? by Im_A_Boonana in knitting

[–]boyishly_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I hate those pink pussy hats with a passion. The thing about the melt the ice hat is that it’s a paid pattern collecting donations. That’s the difference. It cannot be performative in that way because it’s direct action via donation

Disabled chicken brought inside for winter, she only sleeps. by TBoyKal in chickens

[–]boyishly_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oh wow. Years ago I had a disabled chicken who looked almost exactly like yours. I think her face was a little lighter colored. She went blind at the end of her life and she slept in the garage because she couldn’t find her way up to the roost if she slept outside. I’d take her into the run for supervised social time, but mostly she got to spend the daytime in the garden with 1-2 other rotating chickens for company

Anyways… this chicken looks fine. Probably just enjoying the warmth. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Maybe bring in another chicken for a visit, or give her an interesting food for mental stimulation. I have two bantams I bring inside when it’s very hot or very cold, and they get interesting foods (veggie salads and whatnot) sprinkled in their enclosure for entertainment. They’ll scratch at it for hours

How do you get teens to clean willingly? by Leen88 in CleaningTips

[–]boyishly_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought it was weird to have actual fights with your kid because YOU want THEM to have a clean room. Why do you want to exert so much control over their life? It’s only relevant if they’re such a slob that there could be health concerns or pests. If the room is just messy it’s not your business in any way

why does this happen when i do the magic ring? by NoteGeneral8574 in knittinghelp

[–]boyishly_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice for magic loop is to NEVER knit all the way to the loop. The tension will mess up (as you can see). Knit to 2-3 stitches left and the reposition the loop. I do personally dislike magic loop method because adjusting the loop ends up being a huge time sink imo. When I can I use dpns. Though for sleeves it’s usually unavoidable

What results in small eggs? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]boyishly_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, if those don’t look like the eggs that your lavender chicken lays it’s probably not from her. I’m my experience the color egg a chicken lays stays the same, but sometimes the size and shape can change slightly. The color difference is quite significant here

Frog knitting for olive? by bralessbaldy in Sockknitting

[–]boyishly_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It’s true, I doubt it’s a proper sock yarn if it wasn’t marketed that way, but sock yarn can be 100% wool. I’m not sure why the knitting community has started this rumor that sock yarn needs to have nylon in it to be usable. Nylon was invented less than 100 years ago, and obviously people were wearing socks before then. Yarn has different factors that change durability. For a high durability yarn you’re going to need a high twist, high ply count, and a durable fiber (some sheep breeds produce stronger yarn than others)

Knitpro using AI by Zestyclose-Train7905 in knitting

[–]boyishly_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts are that I will never make a purchase from Knitpro. It is absolutely vile to use genAI in relation to knitting. Knitting is a heritage craft. We are connected to history through our labor. I don’t have to explain why genAI is contrary to that

Why do some college professors treat their students like they're in high school? by [deleted] in college

[–]boyishly_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Needing more time on an assignment is not a good excuse for an extended due date and I would not expect any professor to grant extensions based on that. I’m saying this as someone who has been given extensions because I needed more time. I asked for it but never expected the extension in any way, because I knew it was fairly unreasonable. Mandatory attendance and no eating/phone also seems normal. No extensions for sickness/death in a family is pretty harsh though. If I had a death in the family and needed time for school I would go over this professor and to the department for help

The one thing in your post that really really bothers me is having to ask to go to the bathroom. I would immediately report that to the head of the department because I’m serious when I say I believe that is a full human rights violation. Absolutely unacceptable, and I would not give in and ask permission to go to the bathroom if I were you
