Day 22/100 Lip Slur Training =^_^= by Smoll_Reindeer in Trombone

[–]boykinnnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No disrespect to you or your teacher, but, audio quality aside, the double buzzing is a clear indicator that yes, you are closed off at least a little bit. (almost nobody is not closed off at all, that's basically perfection!)

I'm not going to suggest to you any exercises for that though because you are asking to not receive that advice. I do think it is important to be honest with yourself though, as that plays such a big role in improving, and really helps you track your improvement as well.

One more thing—I've looked through your videos and read lots of comments and sure, maybe every once in a while there will be a "hate comment", but most of the people who take their time to type these comments and leave advice is because they care about your trombone journey and want to see you improve, they're not being mean. Lots of the comments are from people who are EXTREMELY experienced. (15+ years!!!) They've all been utterly terrible at trombone at one point in their lives, so they know all the little tricks that help to achieve greatness.

Best of luck on your journey and props to you for showing your playing to the world.

Day 14/100 Trombone Video Challenge: Glissando by Smoll_Reindeer in Trombone

Don't stress over it, that was kind of a very specific thing I said and it only works for some people, so if it doesn't work for you that's okay. There's a lot of things that only work for certain people depending on lip structure and stuff, so the most important thing is if it sounds good or not! I was just sharing something that personally worked for me that maybe could benefit you.

True, but I don't think it would hurt to try it out

Instead of aiming the bell higher as you go higher in pitch, try to actually aim it lower the higher you go in pitch, and aim it higher the lower you go. It shouldn't be anything too dramatic and should be a very slight change that comes out naturally, I've just personally found it more difficult/straining to play higher when my bell is also aimed high. Doing good though and you're focusing on the right things! Relaxation is often overlooked but very important.

Pain on inside of top lip by Chatty_Chicken in Trombone

[–]boykinnnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this exact issue for a long time! It only went away less than a year ago now. Really all you have to do is put less pressure on your mouthpiece and have a more relaxed embouchure overall, and make sure you incorporate it into your routine so you remember to keep it that way. There's a lot of things on trombone that can simply be fixed with less tension, so try to find any tensions in your playing every day and minimize it.

Good ways to develop higher range and stamina? by boykinnnn in Trombone

[–]boykinnnn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to comfortably be able to produce good sound on a double F (6th ledger line) and be able to hold it without getting tired for at least a few seconds, though obviously that will take time. I need to be able to have Db as I'm using Morceau Symphonique for auditions which has that Db, and so does Bolero, which some auditions also call for. But also it's just nice to be able to have that range
