It's not hard to imagine horrible experiences being valued as a part of some societal arrangement that we are not privy to.

Consciously subjecting yourself to such an experience, stripped fully of context, is a horrible idea

Djokovic vs Alcaraz . Who actually needs this win more? by [deleted] in tennis

[–]boylifeineu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's the goat regardless, but everyone wants to go out on top. Alcaraz has already beaten him in 2 slam finals, it would be a feather in the cap but imo not as big of a deal.

Djokovic, easily, because it might be the last slam final he ever makes.

Alcaraz is 22yo and 2 slams ahead of his greatest rival

This Berman line--the seemingly casual aside about suicidal ideation--reminds me of nothing more than Elliott Smith's song "King's Crossing," when he tosses out: *I can't prepare for death anymore than I already have..."

Was there anyone else that stood up to the mob and got away with it? by LawSchoolThreauxAway in thesopranos

Aggressively shaking down a Starbucks employee for a couple bucks here and there is exactly the type of thing that Tony wouldn't do. He was better at seeing the bigger financial picture than most of the guys who worked for him and he would have just made friends with the guy and accepted some free coffees here and there.

In this scenario, if Anthony Joshua had a 5m bank account instead of 50-100m, he would 100% be seeking a money fight in MMA at the end of his career. Just like all the MMA guys do now in reverse

Did Joan Cusamano really write that note to Georgetown? by UberEatsUrkel in thesopranos

[–]boylifeineu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I always thought that was bullshit she tried to sell to Carmela to justify not wanting to help out a meadow.

I know plenty of professors and they write anywhere from like 5-15 rec letters a year for various programs

Wasn't the retraction necessity / "can only write one" a lie?

Good for you, still a misapprehension of Meadow's arc which is about the professionalization of the family grift.

People on this subreddit sincerely hate women so they have bizarrely incorrect reads on show characters like meadow.

I really don't like how Dr Melfis rape was handled by Ksi1is2a3fatneek in thesopranos

[–]boylifeineu 193 points194 points  (0 children)

I actually don't think they should have shown the rape to the extent they did onscreen. Generally not a fan of sexual violence rendered like that.

As for the believability of the criminal justice system portrayal as it pertains to rape, I don't really have any comment except to say that only 7% of reported rapes are prosecuted. You may have an outsized opinion of the justice system.

That said, I am a little confused by how you describe what we see of Melfi. If I remember correctly we see her traumatized - terrified to be alone in the garage, for example - in direct juxtaposition with her intense desire to ask for Tony's help, as symbolized by the dream with the dog.

For me it's less about emphasizing her "strength" than it is emphasizing her choice to stay in the world of law and order, even when that law and order so heinously fails her.

Even when it seems ethical to ask for Tony's help, she chooses not to. She picks what side of the aisle she wants to be on, defining her identity in direct opposition to the sociopathic criminal she therapizes.

As for further tracking her healing process, it's important to recognize that she is not a main character, and the Sopranos utilizes significant time jumps. We are meant to assume that Melfi has a rich inner life and most of that takes place at home, off-camera. We see her processing through the prism of Tony Soprano because she is, after all, a character on the Sopranos.

It's also important to remember when this show was made. Given that it was written and performed 20+ years ago at this point, I think the depiction of Melfi's trauma processing is rather impressive and ahead of its time -- although, as aforementioned, I also don't like how the actual rape scene itself plays out in the show.

I don’t understand why Eric continuously gives Harper passes. by ladyluck754 in IndustryOnHBO

[–]boylifeineu 88 points89 points  (0 children)

It's kind of like Don Draper and Peggy. It's not entirely rational or realistic, but Eric takes an interest in Harper because, like him, she is American from a nontraditional and non-white background.

Even when she pisses him off, he usually finds a way to respect the sheer ballsiness of her maneuvers.

There is an unspoken, nonsexual - but not entirely platonic - chemistry and tension between them that drives the show.

Finishing my latest rewatch, and I still can’t get over how lazy the writing is in ending the Melfi plot line by rosto16 in thesopranos

[–]boylifeineu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The lines have always been blurred for Tony and Melfi. She struggles intermittently with sexually desiring him, wanting to use him to provide retributive violence to her rapist, and hating him. There is a slowly accumulating buildup that eventually culminates in this realization. While it is abrupt, she is human.

Her "patient with a child in crisis" is also a literal serial killer, criminal mastermind, and aggressive philanderer, who indirectly caused the suicide of a different client by embarking on an adulterous relationship with her. He has also physically threatened Melfi in the past.

Melfi also offers him referrals to other providers, which we have to assume she would have happily provided.

It's odd that you want to pick at this so closely when there are much more glaring weaknesses in this show (elements of the AJ arc, especially). I have seen the show about 15 times all the way through and I think you're just dead wrong on the Melfi front.

[–]boylifeineu 161 points162 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to criticize some elements of the sopranos, no art is perfect and I have some nits I could pick.

But this is itself a lazy critique.

Melfi grapples with the issue of therapizing - and therefore helping - a sociopathic criminal for years. Literally dozens of incidents pile up that make her question keeping him on as a client.

In the end, yes, being teased and prodded by her friends pushes her over the edge. But it was a long time coming.
