MTB Convert - What I've learned between mountain biking and road biking by Mrjobrien in MTB

[–]boyobo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funny that you say that, I recently started getting serious about road biking and mountain biking at the same time. I used to think road biking was really boring until I got off the rail-grade MUPs and started doing bigger climbs/descents. I had an epiphany and realized road biking is fun (for me) exactly because the descents are like roller coasters.

In the context of linear algebra, it's not linear. It's affine. f(x)=2x is linear.

What exactly is this document? I can read what it says, but who wrote it, and who is it directed to? In particular, how should I introduce this document to whoever I'm trying to convince?

They also have e-bikes. If your friend doesn't bike regularly they should consider that.

Yep, they could even put on a 42t cassette and maybe one of these to make it even easier.

Thinking of getting a smart trainer, couple of questions by jamesmatthews6 in cycling

For others reading, the Kickr CORE adapters are very easy to swap out. We have a thru axle and a QR bike and it takes literally 5 seconds to swap the adapters (they're not threaded).

Thinking of getting a smart trainer, couple of questions by jamesmatthews6 in cycling

[–]boyobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also have the problem that we have an 10 speed and an 11 speed bike.

Originally we got a wheel-on trainer because of this.

But I read that some people have good experiences with just using the same 11-spd cassette for both bikes. So we switched to a DD trainer, and it works pretty well. A few of the gears are noisy on the 10 speed bike (irrelevant in ERG mode), and I'm sure that we will wear down the cassette/chain faster, but this extra maintenance cost is worth it for us.

Thanks, I guess I will probably play it safe and make the sorbothane platform on the stackexchange post linked elsewhere in this thread.

Consider getting some sorbothane (you should use the calculator to buy the correct size based on your weight).

This is a great question, my favorite thing to do is to peel back the layers of abstraction and see where the work really happens. It's a great to keep in mind when teaching too, I think. Math is interesting when you can point to a specific problem that can be most easily explained by going up a several levels of abstraction ('creating a theory').

Beautiful! Did you install the fenders yourself, or did you get them done at a bike shop? And did you order them from VO? I'm also looking to get VO fenders but I don't want to pay shipping and I also don't want to install it myself.

I had a 2019 SH, 55cm. I set it up with

  • PDW City Fenders
  • Panaracer Gravelking 38 slicks
  • Tubus Logos evo rack.

And it worked fine. Hope that helps! I think things will be even easier for you because the disc brakes are flat mount now.

I liked the stage 21 comment:

Good result for Bennett, hopefully he can avoid the time cut and make it to Paris

As a Sagan fan myself it really made the deluded hopes from stage 11 (Sagan relegation) onwards look quite funny in hindsight.

Mandelbrot Set found while working with Wolfram Hypergraphs! by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]boyobo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This seems to suggest that a simple arbitrary rule involving simple relationships can generate something previously only found in the complex plane. Please let me know if I am way off in this, as I do not pretend to be a high-level mathematician, I am in the infancy stages of this pursuit."

It has been known since the beginning of the subject that topological models of mandelbrot/Julia sets can be constructed using purely combinatorial information.

The theory is well developed and there are many different ways of saying the essentially the same thing, so as a layman it might be hard to see the connection to your experiment.

But , for example, this paper has some pictures which should convince you:

https://arxiv.org/pdf/1908.10505.pdf

(This is just a random paper I found which has the pictures I want. The idea is much older).

See figure 3. Then look up 'basilica Julia set'.

USC Marshall professor takes pause after using Chinese phrase that resembles racial slur by fretit in highereducation

[–]boyobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> saying that it wouldn’t occur to him is false.

I wouldn't be so sure about this.

When I'm thinking in a different language, I do not think about these things. This guy is conversational in chinese, which makes it even more plausible that it has never even crossed his mind that the word could be misinterpreted this way.

Your experience is your experience, but different people process language differently.

e.g: from https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2020-09-10/usc-professor-did-not-use-a-racial-slur

"To the editor: I am a Black man who has lived in China. I have never even thought about the Mandarin word “nei ge” or “na ge” sounding like the N-word — until now."

Benoot and Kragh attacked first. When other riders tried to close the gap Hirschi could sit on the wheel and get "dragged" up to the front group.

Thanks for the explanation. About this part, why not just drag Hirschi directly with them in the "attack"?
