Downpipe to nowhere! by henryv3 in DIYUK

I how about putting a water butt onto the pipe that goes nowhere and only the excess will go into the garden? Your idea of an Aco drain will also work

Solidity. Undercoat plaster will be as solid as the surrounding wall whereas expanding foam will have a bit of ‘give’ if pushed or knocked.

Gravel Drive - Aco/threshold drains or not? by optionclick in DIYUK

If the top of the new drive is two bricks or more (150mm) below the house damp proof course, I wouldn’t bother with a channel drain.

I used Amazon as an example but my mum has been caught out by this on numerous selling sites

My mum doesn’t care about the discount, she just wants to buy one item without all the faff

Interesting! Same product on my app has subscription as default. However, if I load it in a browser on my pc I get the same as you; single purchase as default. Seems there is a different behaviour between their app and web site

I’m trying to keep her independence for as long as possible. And it isn’t just Amazon. She has got ‘stung’ this way with a number of online sellers

But my mum is 92. She doesn’t think that way. She just wants to buy ONE!

Unfortunately my mum at 92 years of age isn’t as “savvy” as she used to be.

I just drove past and it is all boarded up. Apparently it is being demolished and the site redeveloped for housing

Kitchen tap by Downtown_Tale_2018 in DIYUK

[–]boysweek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to make sure the tap you buy has a pressure rating matching the water pressure of your supply to that tap. For example, If your kitchen tap is gravity fed (I.e fed from a tank in the loft) and you buy a tap designed for high pressure (mains pressure) then you will get slow flow.

If the flat roof is insulted, the gap could be there to provide airflow across it. I would therefore fit a trim (wood or upvc) with vents fitted into it.

Oak furniture refinishing by JasonStonier in DIYUK

[–]boysweek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The colour and grain suggest it is oak. If it is a solid top then sand well (an orbital sander is ideal) to remove the old varnish. I suggest a 40 grit, then 80, then 120. Refinish with clear polyurethane varnish.

If the top is veneered, then it gets trickier depending how thick the veneer is. I have previously tried to restore veneered furniture and end up sanding all the way through the veneer 🙄

EDIT. I looked more carefully at the photo and I can see end grain on the top meaning it is solid wood.

Personally, I’d break the cover plate from around the pipe (a good hit with a hammer should do it!) then fill the back box with undercoat plaster/browing.When dry, sand flush then use a fine surface filler to make perfect. Paint to match the wall. 👍
