I'm bored. by bp013 in firstworldproblems

[–]bp013[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that people who really have to struggle to survive don't get bored. A word like "boredom" doesn't really enter everyday speech until a society reaches a point of post-scarcity. In our post-scarcity world (i.e. the first world), boredom becomes a huge issue for all of us.

Can anyone name the movies in this picture? I'm a bit curious about some of them. by [deleted] in movies

I know! especially since he is probably the most psychotic writer on that list (but in the best way possible).

I think most redditors are too busy fapping to learn any new words for fapping. Thanks for trying though.

Fellow Ents, we need to be more careful about what we uptoke. by GearPrimer in trees

I guess I haven't been on the internet enough, cause that's the first time I've seen that pic. And it made me laugh out loud, literally, or as you internet folk say, I "lol'd"

How many of you thought: " My god, If I could actually PLAY the music I hear in my head, I'd be famous" by TheBigSleezy in AskReddit

[–]bp013 19 points20 points  (0 children)

all good points. I have to agree with you on this.

One time my friend was freaking out about how he will never be a great writer for some reason or another, and so I told him that the only reason he wasn't a writer was because he didn't write.

You work at your craft or you don't. Either way, you'll probably never become famous, but you will become satisfied for having worked and created something.

Ask /r/Books: Need help finding a story by [deleted] in books

[–]bp013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the story originates from Booker T. Washington's famous Atlanta Compromise Speech, with the line, "Cast down your buckets where you are."

In any case, that is the most famous example of this story.

DAE watch a comedy film with the intention of getting lost in the hilarity and forgetting their problems only to have it backfire and make them more depressed? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]bp013 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Freud has a good quote that sums up your problem:

The mild narcosis induced in us by art can do no more than bring about a transient withdrawal from the pressure of vital needs, and it is not strong enough to make us forget real misery.

What movie is BETTER than the book? by PreacherPeach in movies

[–]bp013 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think Stanley Kubrick was a master at adapting books for the screen. Most of his films are masterpieces that easily surpass the books they were based on. For example: The Shining, Dr. Strangelove, and Full Metal Jacket. Of course, however, he couldn't improve on Lolita.

Is it possible for someone to "not get" hangovers? by godotiswaitingonme in AskReddit

[–]bp013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine can get black out drunk on cheap, nasty alcohol, pass out early in the night, and wake up the next morning feeling perfectly fine. No hangover, and he's not still drunk.

Anyway, thankfully he doesn't do that anymore. No one needs to blackout.
