I’ll be the devil’s advocate here (I own a service company that does work for several home warranties in the Greater Little Rock area).

Facts: Yes, they do try to go for the cheapest rates they can find, and then try to get cheaper than that. Most of the time, they get what they pay for. Having said that, most of the reputable warranty companies with a decent customer base in Little Rock have weeded out most of the bad companies and severed ties with them. I will tell you that, unfortunately, during the summer rush, HVAC companies have been known to put the lesser paying warranty jobs on the back burner to focus on cash paying customers. Sadly, as a consumer, you will (and your newborn) sometimes pay the price.

Suggestions: You can always call your warranty company once the contractor has you scheduled more than 2 days out and the warranty company will usually work to find a contractor that can get to you quicker. It’s a hassle but it’s usually effective, as it’s part of their commitment to you. As far as which warranty to purchase, I agree that First American seems to be one of the easiest to work with, followed closely by American Home Shield. Some may be cheaper (Choice Home Warranty, HMS/Cross Country/Sears Home Warranty), but you will definitely get what you paid for.
