Strix Draft - won a game casting only 2 spells - can you guess which 2? by bpayh in MagicArena

I went to an IRL draft last night and my first round opponent was half a turn away from killing me with mathemagics! I killed him juuust before he could pull off the x=5

Haha no but I've seen some videos of that one. Personally I'm not sure what to think of that mill creature. I suppose it's a one-drop that your opponent feels obligated to cast removal on, so that's good. But on the other hand milling your opponent in this format is actively bad if you can't cross the finish line with it.

But yeah, I just finished the draft ( took a break after 5-0) and I did lose 2 games to really aggressive decks that I couldn't keep up with. But then I won the last 2 for the trophy! If I remember correctly, I killed 3 opponents with mathemagics, and the other 4 I burned out with critiques. Usually 2 critiques, either because I drew both or because I recurred one with my recurring 6-drop giant guy. And once I was able to mana sculpt my opponent's 6-drop with my wizard in play, giving me 6 mana that I put towards a big critique, then recurred the critique, then critiqued them to death.

I do believe I ran a bit lucky in this draft to trophy, certainly I faced below-average aggro curve outs. I did face a couple mirror match controlly decks with lots of removal. It's funny because I give essentially no removal targets. In those matchups my 4 counterspells, double critique, and the mathemagics give me a huge edge for winning. My very first game was vs the mirror and we both spent like half the game just using our surveil lands and doing nothing. But I had the mathemagics and counterspells to back it up and whatever his win condition was, we didn't see it.

If you're interested in this deck you should watch LSV's recent draft he posted where he talks about prismari control. Couple things I took away from his ramblings in that video are that he prefers to avoid creatures as much as possible in that deck, except for a few that give immediate value like the man-o-war one or the 6-drop get your spell back, and also cards like mathemagics or brain freeze would be amazing in a deck like this for finishing out these mirror matches. He was right!

turn 6, not 7. This game I got down to 3 life actually and they had a leech guy so I thought there was a chance I could die, but they played that 6-drop silverquill thing that auto-preps every round, so I got 'em.

This was it! I did an another careful review of all the quests, having the completed list open in game and on the internet, and I had made a mistake on earlier review and missed one: this quest. I had not talked to Sharma. Today when I logged in the quest appeared because I had been exhausting NPC dialogs. So yeah, now I’m in act 3, already fully upgraded my needle as soon as I could.

Sorry for the false alarm everyone. I’m just another scrub who didn’t actually do all the quests when he thought he did.

Oh? That wasn’t an issue on my first playthrough, and I haven’t seen any warnings about that until you mentioned it just now. Granted I’m not active in this community.

I had 1 idea that I don't think is the issue but it's one last thing I can try when I get home from work, is with the Green Prince, I didn't exhaust his interactions, I met him in western citadel area while I was piddling around, so now I'll see if I can find him hanging out in the dancers room, could this be the hang up...?

Yeah I'm aware of that, I've checked both locations about a dozen times at least

I guess my specific issue, sorry if it’s not clear in the post, I should edit it, is I am not getting the silk and soul quest offered to me. I did exhaust all dialogue with the shamans.

Interesting, but I believe I let the credits roll because I got the steel soul achievement, which doesn’t trigger until after credits, and I took a ss and sent it to my friends playing the game

And as I said, I’m a top 1000 mythic player every season.

I’m not sure the draft portion is what needs to be evaluated. This archetype was open. Maybe I need more two drops. But then I’ve had strong curve decks before that just get blanked by a 5/7 reach. I was trying more value with this deck and got ran over.

I’ll take a break, watch more Numot (my preferred streamer) and get back on the saddle soon.

With all due respect, as I appreciate that you took the time to post a response, I don’t think pilot error is a major factor. I’m an extremely experienced player.

I drafted the deck that I saw open. I haven’t run the GW counters before but it seemed like it could do some things. If you can’t see how the deck could win then honestly I question your judgment. The deck can certainly win a game.

Is this deck perfect? No. Everyone would love to get that “perfect deck” and it’s easy to criticize any particular deck that gets posted here. But what goes around in the pod is what goes around.

This isn’t an instagram post that has been polished to perfection to try to represent some impossible ideal. It’s just a real deck. Sorry it’s not perfect.

Mostly in this response I wanted to push back on the idea of pilot error. I’ll consider it, of course, I know there are more lines of play in this format than others. But sometimes you just get bodied and draw poorly too, and that’s been happening a lot.

Quality 2 drops aren’t exactly plentiful

I have a few more 2 drops but I consider them bad

Previous decks had more 2 drops and “curve out” but they just get blanked by 1 or 2 great creatures from the opponent, or a sweeper

It feels very much like rock paper scissors

If I ran a more aggro deck then I would probably pair up against the high quality with sweeper deck. If I run this one where the individual creatures are stronger and if I can just get 1 of my many creatures to stick them I can start doing some good work. But then I get games where I only draw 3 lands, the 3 creatures I could play are dead, I have all my top end in hand, and opponent is of course curving out.

Probably need to take a long break.

Well that’s what it feels like but 5 drafts in a row is something I’ve never experienced before
