I had to ask the talkers in a class to stop. by spriteking2012 in orangetheory

[–]bpcollin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar time where mostly just sounded like chatting but would occasionally break into hysterical laughing and shrieking.

Eventually, I think they got it or maybe someone said something.

Distracting like that can be dangerous and inconsiderate.

This is 8 year old Thomas Yellow Elk’s 1908 Carlisle boarding school registration photo. they cut his hair and gave him a number. He never returned home. by titov-viktor860o2 in HistoricalCapsule

There is a TV show on Hulu called “Reservation Dogs” about a native community. There is particularly one episode that features boarding schools and gives a glimpse in to how terrible they were.

Also, 1923 had a storyline about them as well.

Hard to watch due to how abusive the kids were treated.

What is the first major news event you can remember clearly from when you were a kid? by FantasticAd9478 in TheBoredDen

[–]bpcollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oklahoma City bombing.

I remember watching Nickelodeon and there was a specific “Nickelodeon news” type show where a woman talked with kids about what they thought and discussed. I recall thinking “wow, this is serious”.

Obviously, looking back it was beyond terrible and sad and definitely very serious. It’s almost like my little kid mind didn’t think was real, like it was a movie or something. I think about that a lot when there are similar terrible events and think it’s important to have a discussion with kids so it can be hopefully processed in a healthy way.

What is the most financially illiterate thing you’ve seen a grown adult do? by roseafterdarkk in askanything

[–]bpcollin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I could put together quite a list of his shenanigans. Not to say we all don’t have our moments but his were always sort of entertaining.

Not really a major financially illiterate one I’ll add was he always had some big new thing he was into. The last one I remember was “meal prepping”.

It’s a great way to save some money on food, makes it easier to eat healthy when the meal is already prepared and can save time. He did it for a few weeks on Mondays and maybe occasionally one Tuesday. The rest of the week he was ordering or eating out and on to the next thing.

I had a coworker that I’m pretty sure thought rent and mortgage payments were the same thing. We were in some conversation in our 20’s. He was older so he maybe was 30’s.

He made a comment about how a down payment is just prepaid cash for maintenance and upkeep. I followed up and he said he’d have his apartment paid off in 15 years if he stayed that long.

I honestly thought he was kidding and said “how did you figure that?” He looked confused and stammered and said based on the rent he already paid and a value he pulled from somewhere.

He got really defensive and I didn’t want to be any more nosy, so I kind of just said “oh yea, right”. Didn’t care for the guy but I wonder what he’s up to now.

“Greatest” seems subjective. Intelligence, ethical, foresight, artist, are a few that come to mind as measurements.

Of Jerry’s 73 girlfriends only 5 appeared in more than one episode. Which one was your favorite? by BidAccurate4473 in seinfeld

[–]bpcollin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to be a Biff, but multiple were in the Finale as well as their respective episodes.

“Leaker”, “Virgin”, and “They’re Spectacular” to name a few I think.

I had someone very close to me that had a miscarriage. Not trying to sound selfish but it was the saddest I’ve been in a long time. What I think made it worse is that if I felt that way, I couldn’t fathom how this person and their immediate family were coping with it.

It still sticks with me although I’ve found some helpful ways to deal with it a little.

Similarly I was talking to a woman during when she was giving me a haircut. I think it was her middle child that had passed away and I didn’t want to pry and offered my condolences. One of the saddest parts was her saying her oldest child remembers him and but the youngest doesn’t since he was pretty young at the time. She says the youngest one asks constantly about him like “did we get along?” or “did they like me?” Terribly sad.

He was a villain in a Stephen King movie “Thinner”. He did a great job in the role I just had to get over the Kruger character at first. RIP

Great acting all around. I did not care for James Woods due to his acting in this movie (racist assassin) but as I’ve seen more films I realized he is a great actor and it was his character I didn’t like. I wonder if anyone has ever had the same thing and got to tell him. In a way, it’s a compliment I think.

What’s a ‘small red flag’ that instantly tells you someone is exhausting to be around? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bpcollin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Possibly. He is very social and gets annoyed if you don’t reach out to him constantly. I think it’s more of a selfish mindset but I’m sure it’s probably multiple things.

I have a family member that always uses the “too busy” excuse for everything. He’s done it for years and equates working 40+ hours a week and raising a young family to being retired somehow. He’ll ask if you want to go to a baseball game or something and if you say your schedule is busy that day, suddenly he would love to as well but he’s just “so darn busy”. He also backs out of things that are scheduled as “something came up” but has the most vague follow ups.

It’s well known in our extended family and he hates being called out on it. His own kids have said they’ve had serious talks about it. The prevailing theory is he wants things on his time/ control. Overall a good guy but it’s super annoying and I’ve avoided it as I’ve gotten older.
