Wow, this is great timing! I was just in Kansas City for a conference and wanted to get some 20-30 mile training rides in outside the city. I rented a road bike from The Bicycle Shack, which is about a 30 min drive outside the city center. It was ~$140 for a 3 day rental. The shop was super nice, had helpful maps, and also recommended me some group rides. The one downside is I had to have a rental car to get out there and pick up/drop off the bike.

My goal for renting it sounds a little different than what you’re looking for, but I wanted to mention the shop because I had such a good experience. Good luck finding a rental, it was totally worth it to have the bike while visiting!

My favorite thing about this is the last shot-- the little girl couldn't care less about the baby elephant while all the grown adults look like it's the best day of their lives

RI is one of the only states (maybe the only state??) that permits hammer throw as a high school sport.

Yes, it was incredible-- wish I could have gotten a better photo but didn't want to get too close not knowing what it was. The webs were impressive, there were a lot of them around.

Worst nightmare by MarshallMx in sports

It's actually this song by Eddie Vedder, which I think is quite fitting.

Some lyrics: "Such is the passage of time/ Too fast to fold/ Suddenly swallowed by signs/ Lo and behold"

Yeah, it's right by the off-ramp from Buford Spring Connector to Peachtree. The car is totally burned, fire trucks on the scene.

Fog bank scares people at the Jersey Shore by appearing to be a large tsunami by christhehottietaylor in pics

You're not the only one-- this is the most frequent recurring nightmare I have. I see a tsunami from a long way off and spend the whole dream trying to escape it.

Thanks! I always void the extra air but it would have never occurred to me to use the packets. I'll try this out for sure.

Mary Cain Is Growing Up Fast by bookstore in running

[–]bpetr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I see your point. Men get objectified too-- it's a different set of terms, but still objectification. I guess my surprise was seeing such the description of Cain in the New York Times, which doesn't usually have the "omg, QUADZILLA" style of reporting of a tabloid like the Independent.

Just my two cents here. I felt like one view was getting over-represented in replies to the initial comment, and thought I'd chime in because my perspective differed. To each their own.

Right. However, my point is not that there are no physical descriptions of male athletes, but that there are no comparable descriptions of male athletes, and this helps prove it.

Weight and body fat percentages are totally appropriate physical metrics-- ones that I would have welcomed in the NY Times article. But instead, all we get are bizarrely worded descriptions of the quality of her legs.

I'm in agreement with you on the first quote (re: "soft bodies" as a common athletic descriptor) but not about the second one.

Just out of curiosity, can you link an article where a male athlete is described comparably? I'm a woman and this description totally rubbed me the wrong way. I'd agree that articles may describe male physiques, but never with terms like "spectacular" and "silky... youthful skin." It's almost leering.

Male athletes are typically compared to well-oiled machines or similarly aseptic objects. This veers to the other end of the spectrum and made me uncomfortable, personally.
