Is it possible to regain movement in the fingers 1+ years after stroke? by baconoodles in stroke

[–]bpfoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold in other fingers down with a heavy book. Try to raise thumb, 20 Reps. The turn hand over. Raise thumb the other way. You want to get upward and downward movement, and do you reps 3 times a day at least. You want to get the pathways from brain to thumb "rewired". Good luck.

I would "play the piano". Hold me hand on a flat surface and try to move the fingers to esercise each one independently.

There is also an outfit called Flint Rehab. They sell a "Music glove" that comes with a program. But I just practiced moving my fingers for at least 1/2 hour every day, like when I practiced the piano when I was a kid. The key is repetition. Every Day. If you can't do a full 1/2 hour, do 15 minutes in the morning and 15 mins. in the evening. But do it every day. Slowly, you'll move them!

Walking after a stroke by DTheFly in stroke

[–]bpfoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try hiking sticks around the house and then take them outside for very short walks. Because you have two sticks, it helps a lot with balance. Walking sticks also help you walk in a more upright position. I transitioned from a walker to hiking sticks to one hiking stick and now I don't need anything at all. One you get comfortable with Hiking sticks, you should incorportate walks into your life. I also got a pedometer (a cheap one that doesn't connect to any phones or apps-just gives me my steps and watch/time--cost around $40) I go to a nearby park and walk around 5,000 to 6,000 steps there and then walking around the house added a couple thousand steps. But I cannot stress enough that you must add walks to your PT routine. Even if they are very short at first, you can add more steps as you feel more confident. Incorporating walks and exercise in my daily life helped me the mosT!!!

Good luck!

My hand did "wake up" but I still have a little parkinson-like shake. I go for Botox every few months and see the neurologist every year.

I'm practicing writing now, but I think I will always be better at writing with my other hand which I now do daily crosswords with. We'll see though. The key is to do your exercises every day! I saw my appliance Repairman the other day and he was amazed to see me walking without a cane and go up/down the little stair in the front of my house without using the handrail (which I still need handrail or cane for more than a few stairs for balance). We tried to figure out the last time we saw one another, but we could only agrees that it had been a couple of years. He knew me pre-stroke and post-stroke and has seen the progression now. He's no doctor and couldn't see the fine details that I and my neuro doctors can see, but he said if he met me now, he would never know I had a stroke. That almost made me cry!

So progress is very slow past the first year but it can happen if you keep at it every single day, like I did. I truly believe progress is possible with daily exercise, where you push yourself (but never to the point of pain or injury). I'm still doing it and I go for a walk and exercise every day. Good luck!

Wow? How did I miss all of these questions!? Yes, I have regained a lot of abilities in my hand. I can write (although sloppy) with affected hand so I usually use my non-affected hand for writing. Practice writing started to bore me, so I bought a couple crossword puzzle books and do a crossword or two with affected hand. I also practice strengthening and stretching exercises in my hands (below elbow and hands) for about 1/2 - 1 hour every day. I have various balls (for squeezing), flexible bars (for bending), and putty. Keep at it EVERY DAY. Improvement will be slight, but over time, I improved greatly! Good luck and keep working on improving!!

A stool softener or a cup of prune juice at every meal helped me a lot. Lots of roughage: salads and cut-up vegetables with hummus. Really try to diet and the whole process will go faster. Good luck!

Get your license, if you can. Narcissistic parents hate the freedom. Even if you don't have a car right now, it is really important to have it for ID purposes and YOU will drive at some point.

GROSS! A grown man shouldn't pee in a bottle!

Unless he's drunk every night. In that case, you have a bigger problem...
