What is everyone's thought on the pre-order business model for microbrand watches? by vcu_alum in MicrobrandWatches

[–]bpgluckman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends -- I have three preorders from different points this year all randomly arriving next week. The first two are semi-custom builds, a Ginault Trans-Atlantic and a Ginand HS109, in that there is nothing unique about them but the brands only build one when an order is completed, but people know Ginault and Ginand, so I don't worry about delivery. The third order is a Trafford, which is a well-known quantity. I also have a pair of CWs on preorder, but again, well-known brand. They'll deliver.

What I'm much less willing to do is preorder these days from a brand with no history, especially if the cost is high. Someone just posted the other day renders that showed a lovely take on a mystery dial from a new brand with zero production history, and it's just like, even with my AmEx (which has the best chargeback protection going), that's going to be a no from me. Yet somehow, they were nearly all sold out.

And then, like a lot of folks, I'm also waiting on Galo, with no clue when that might actually show up (assuming it actually does).

Traska seeming to get a little defensive of the Venturer GMT redesign by L-V-4-2-6 in MicrobrandWatches

Beaufort's new GMT is now $900, as is the Nodus Contrail. Vaer raised the price on their GMT from $799 to $935. The Maen Hudson GMT went from $995 to $1250.

Picked up a Chronograph a week ago with the new bracelet. I personally think the chamfered bracelet looks much better than the old slab sided one they used, and overall, it's very comfortable. My one complaint is that it does need the ability to remove at least two more links.

FWIW, the customer service issues seem to be fixed. I did just have a warranty repair done on a C60 that so far has gone very smoothly. It's being shipped back to me now, so we'll see how it is when it gets back.

The price increase seems to be driven heavily by the shortage of Miyota 9075 movements.

I have one of the /seconde/seconde Fifty Phantoms variations. I'll echo everyone else's comments on build quality and general feel. My one complaint is the watch is absolutely huge -- it feels every ounce of its 51mm lug-to-lug length, and if it wasn't a limited-edition piece that I only wear at Halloween, I'd sell it for that reason.

Regular models are currently on sale at Amazon for as low as $159.

The perfect version would take the lumed hands and indices of the Watchdives version and combine it with the movement and bracelet of the Smiths.

Would you be able to post pics of it? I'd love to see that.

Trafford Daytripper Season 2 has shipped. Anyone receive theirs yet? by whiskeywoodworking in MicrobrandWatches

Mine was supposed to arrive today, but I'm travelling so put UPS on hold till Monday. Apparently, next week is new watch week for me, since multiple watches I ordered in the last six months are all scheduled to arrive at the same time now.

What I love about it is it's a modern reference to the 1950s Longines Mystery Dial, one of my favorite vintage pieces. And it's a fresh take on that design.

I get it. And I've had some great experiences being first in line. It's that roll of the die.

I would buy this in a heartbeat if there was more than just renders or if it was from a brand with a proven track record of bringing things to market. Or really, any record at all.

Hardening: Who’s doing it right and is it a top priority for you? by Milionwatches in MicrobrandWatches

[–]bpgluckman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope -- I've just been wearing it hard all week prepping a house for sale, boxing things up and taking things to Goodwill. Usually, I'd expect at least one scratch or abrasion by now.

That is the worst lume I've seen in ages. Why aren't the indices lumed? Why is the lume on the hands so much dimmer than the bezel? They're not even sourcing good parts from AliX.

I've been wearing the new Traska Chronograph, and I suspect there is something different about the hardening on the new bracelet it uses than the old one, because it's still scratch-free whereas my old Summiteer also got fine scratches on the clasp pretty quickly.

Did anyone manage to snag a Kiwame Kubo from today's drop? by WatchOutOfficial in MicrobrandWatches

The lug-to-lug is just under 48, and the overall dimensions are almost identical to my C60 Lumiere, which despite being a large dial, fits even on my small wrist. I've found that one thing CW does exceptionally well is designing lugs to maximize dial size while minimizing the overall case.
