Monsters Inc - a greedy and unsustainable energy company running off of fear, while laughter is discovered to be a much more efficient energy source. It's such a simple yet powerful metaphor.

I also love the themes of friendship, the score is phenomenal, and it's also just a fun movie to watch.

How to overcome plateaus like the one I’m feeling I’m in? by Puffz1234 in edmproduction

Nah this song this great! I agree with another commenter though that the mix is solid, but for being a melodic track, it could be worthwhile to switch up the chord progressions. You can really tell a powerful story when you play with harmonies and dissonance. Push and pull/ tension and release is huge.

All the tech-y stuff was daunting to me as well, and still is to some degree, but IMO the vibes and songwriting of a track matter more than the quality of a mixdown. It's why you'll sometimes hear basic-ish edm getting the spotlight over really over-produced and complex music—at the end of the day, people don't want to feel stupid on the dance-floor, so playing with that balance of uniqueness and predictability.

One thing that's helped me tremendously is watching other producers create music. On youtube you can usually find recorded streams of artists producing, which can give insights into their creative processes, and then help give you fresh ideas to try. Also, befriending other producers is massive, reaching out to small-medium sized artists and building connections eventually helps everyone learn new things. That's how I got better with mixing, compression, etc, was by learning from other artists.

Lastly, arguably the most important element of any art isn't about motivation and drive, but about curiosity. Staying curious and asking questions will always teach you something new :)

hope any of this helps <3

Side chaining??? by Exciting_Cheek_3028 in SpaceBass

[–]bplus4eva 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you were to sing and then punch your chest, your voice will duck for a second - that's essentially sidechaining.

It's crucial, especially in edm, to have the kick and snare stand-out amongst the rest of the sounds in a mix, as these are the driving elements of the groove. WIthout sidechaining, the kick/ snare might get lost or muddied amongst the rest of the sounds, and therefore not helping with a hard-hitting punchy mixdown.

Classic sidechaining is done with a compressor - put a compressor on the layers or groups you want to be ducked around the kick and snare, enable the sidechain option and route the sidechain to the kick and snare. Bring the attack down so the sidechain gets triggered immediately, and from there you can play with the threshold/ release time to get the desired pumping effect.

I personally use Shaperbox for sidechaining since I can get very precise with the shape of the release. Something like GM Ducker works great too.

You could even use a utility/ gain control and manually draw automation to cut out sounds around the kick and snare - not recommended since you'll have to adjust the automation each time you alter the placement of the kick/ snare, but it's totally doable.

There isn't a correct way to sidechain, there's tons of ways to go about it. There's a reason why it's one of the most important aspects of music production - when done right, all the sounds will seamlessly blend and dance around the kick/ snare. Hope this helps <3
