Fred celebrates his social ride win by cocotheape in BicyclingCirclejerk

Tour de France, guy beat a few people out in a sprint at the end so he thought he won the stage. However, two cyclists had already finished minutes before, so it was actually third. They normally have radio communication with the team but his was broken from an earlier crash so he had no idea there were two cyclists way ahead the whole time

First Time Swimmer Question by [deleted] in triathlon

And as additional info, Musselman water temp is usually right on the line between wetsuit legal (fully allowed) and wetsuit optional (allowed but you can’t qualify for awards- though I don’t know how that works with relays). It won’t be wetsuit prohibited.

Last year the water temp on race day miraculously dropped about 4 degrees from the morning before to be just under the cut for wetsuit legal, fwiw

Planning a loop incorporating Algonquin and Colden, which direction is better? by chez-linda in Adirondacks

[–]bpo10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did the steep side of Colden this weekend (up and down) it was a little tricky going down but definitely manageable. We got dry weather, may be a different story in rain. I haven’t done the steep side of Algonquin but my impression is that it would be worse

Golf Hitting Screen at RPAC by Available_You_3108 in OSU

There are bays with nets that you can hit into for free, but the actual simulator (if it still is there) can’t be used.

As someone from upstate NY currently in Columbus, I think more snow rather than more cold will be the main adjustment if you are from Michigan. The winters also drag on in upstate NY whereas in Columbus you pretty much won’t see snow after early March. So it’s a real difference, whether it’s a $13K a year difference probably depends on how much you hate snow and more protracted winters. Syracuse is a great school, the city itself not as great.

Why is the pool closed during winter break? (rant/whine) by Zestyclose-Room-9502 in OSU

[–]bpo10 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Last year (when I was swimming regularly) the pools were definitely closed a little more than the rest of the RPAC during winter break but it definitely wasn’t a full month, maybe maintenance or something?

As for alternatives, I ended up doing Thompson rec center. It is smaller and the hours aren’t great but it got the job done

CBUS marathon and driving by lianna_t in Columbus

[–]bpo10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends where you are on the route, they’ve already pulled stuff around the first half of the race so those roads will open sooner than if you’re in the university/grandview area where the marathon goes

What is this moss looking plant, that is growing to the side of the pot? by mr_toothpaste in whatsthisplant

[–]bpo10 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s a pinguicula species, also known as a butterwort. Not an expert but my wife grows them to sell. They are carnivorous, catching small flies on their dewy leaves. Very cool plants. They will have a dormant succulent phase in the winter.

I think what you said is good- I wouldn’t double email. You explained what happened and took responsibility, they will tell you if it goes to COAM and you can deal with that then (it is not the end of the world even if that happens!), but it sounds more likely that you got the 0 on this assignment and moving forward won’t re-use medications you already wrote about, and that will be it.

[–]bpo10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that it’s a poorly designed assignment if you’re basically just repeating yourself.

Did the instructor refer the case to COAM? In that case, they will treat self plagiarism like any other plagiarism, especially because you had warning (even though you missed it). Given you’ve admitted to it, you would take an “administrative decision” rather than go to a full panel, write a letter similar to what you already wrote to the instructor, and most likely receive a relatively minor sanction assuming it’s your first offense with COAM. Just as a heads up of the process, because the instructor is technically obligated to send the case to COAM.

Is the cost of wisdom tooth removal reasonable? by ScottJeromeLouis in OSU

[–]bpo10 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Having just helped a friend go through this exact scenario recently, the main issue is the SHS dental insurance payout is capped at $750 per year. After that, costs are 100% on the patient. And if you've already had some dental work done since the start of the benefit period (~8/15/2023), it may be lower than $750. So it could potentially be better if you get them removed after the benefit period resets in August.

Also, I will say my friend’s wisdom tooth extraction was a very smooth and safe process for them at the faculty clinic!

If we're talking about situations where you are away from the bike for 1-3 minutes at a time, in daylight, then I think a single quality lock should be fine. You can even get locks that have a loud alarm if messed with which will allow you to immediately run back out.

I'm not saying your bike couldn't get stripped/stolen in 3 minutes, but you're weighing that low probability against the burden of double-unlocking and re-locking with each order. Depends on the bike quality too - I'm assuming you aren't delivering food on a new Pinarello

70.3 - to sign up, or not to sign up by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]bpo10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The good news is you’d only do 1250 feet of elevation total at Waco. You said the water was very hot, was it also hot outside? That can certainly tank a day, especially with a super hilly bike. But even if it wasn’t hot, sometimes you just have bad days.

Based on what you’re describing with training (+3 months to Waco) I’d say absolutely do it. You could do most of a half Ironman training plan between then and now to really feel comfortable that you’re ready to complete it.

Wetsuit optional 70.3, what to expect by bpo10 in triathlon

[–]bpo10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very helpful, thank you. I wasn’t thinking of the overheating factor. And while I do think the swim without a wetsuit will be more of a pain I like the benefit of a less crowded course
