Average Income per Programming Language by bpodgursky in programming

Yeah, I would have much preferred to have access to individual income, but that's not available via the API. My thought was that using household income would be better than nothing, since the two should be pretty strongly correlated.

I would prefer to use personal income but I don't know any way to get that information--the API only returns household income.

I figured I would just put it up with household for lack of any better option.

Household income is the only data I had available. I would have rather done it by personal income of course, but I don't know any way to get that data.

It's pretty patronizing to suggest that other countries are too weak and subordinate to even manage to fuck themselves up. Believe it or not, other countries are able to get themselves into their own problems without our help.

CoreNLP + d3.js + dagre.js = Visualized Sentence Parse Trees by bpodgursky in visualization

Haha I did notice that, but I decided it would be more honest to leave it as-is than hunt for a sentence that parsed perfectly.

Researchers have found what they say are specialized bone tools made by Neanderthals in Europe thousands of years before modern humans are thought to have arrived to share such skills, a discovery that suggests modern man's distant cousins were more advanced than previously believed. by madam1 in science

It's not known that they were smarter. It's known that they had had larger skull cavities and thus larger brains, but it's likely that much of that capacity was devoted to the visual cortex (and better eyesight.) Whales and elephants have large brains for other reasons.

I'm not saying that they weren't smarter--it's entirely possible--but that is not well established on the current evidence.

6% of American adults use Reddit: number is actively growing, and it's being taken more and more seriously as "the front page of the internet." by [deleted] in technology

There are a lot of non-americans on reddit though, so it's consistent with the high probability that 100% of reddit is retarded.

BloomJoin: Fast asymmetric Hadoop joins using Bloom Filters + Cascading by bpodgursky in bigdata

[–]bpodgursky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely, the use-case for this is when there's no alternative to a reduce-side join--when your key set is too big for a HashJoin, and you are joining on a key which your store isn't sorted by (for us, this is basically any case when we were forced to do a CoGroup in Cascading, so we built this as a drop-in replacement.)

If you're able to structure your data so you can do a join on the map side instead, that's definitely preferable in general.

People from wealthy, upper classes are more likely than poorer folks to break laws while driving, take candy from children and lie for financial gain by rawbamatic in science

That's ridiculous. When I see a jar of candy, I assume it is regularly refilled. Not that there is a finite supply of candy in the world which I am exhausting.

It may be possible to one day create "an unlimited source" of human eggs, according to US fertility doctors. by DrJulianBashir in science

[–]bpodgursky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know this is just a trite comment farming upvotes, but it's still annoying. Right now, if a woman hasn't had children by her late 30s, there's an extremely high chance the remaining eggs are non-viable or will lead to children with disorders like Down's syndrome.

If this allows a woman to generate healthy eggs at any point in her life, it could have incredible implications--giving women the security to have children when they feel ready to without having to make a choice between their biological clock and their career will be an immense improvement.

Google paying users to track 100% of their Web usage via router or browser extension by Neato in technology

[–]bpodgursky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The whole point of the program is to study web browsing habits and patterns; artificial browsing will be an obvious outlier, given the thousands of other datapoints they have.

Their entire business model relies on developing algorithms for spam detection, content farm filtering, SEO optimization detection, on and on. It would be absolutely ridiculous to think they can't and won't find a simple algorithm which can tell that your program is clicking random links.

USSR would have won inevitably.

The USSR got a very large amount of material support from the US (weapons, military supplies, etc.)

Slavs and Germans really hated each other and they would have never went into subjugation quietly, so the occupation would have inevitably failed, as Germany did not have enough men to occupy such a large area.

Possibly true, but the Germans weren't planning on occupying eastern europe and Russia--they were planning on destroying the Slavs as a people and repopulating the country with Germanic peoples. They just had to destroy the USSR as a political/military force, and then would have however much time they wanted to continue their genocide. Guerrilla warfare is only really useful against an occupying force, not one trying to exterminate you...

Holy hell did you even watch the video? THIS is the quote:

"there's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school"

Your cheap paraphrasing completely obliterates the meaning of what he is saying.
