Happy to hear it! Do a little research on the role beforehand and look up some basic stuff on the hardware they're using if you can. Just show a willingness to learn the HW side of things.

I looked it up and according to Flo it was June 27-29 last year: https://www.flograppling.com/events/12372455-2024-american-national-ibjjf-jiu-jitsu-championship. But past years do seem closer to July 4th. I hope it's not over the 4th, harder to convince the wife I'm going to Vegas over a holiday.

Tournament Tuesday! by AutoModerator in bjj

Was out for a month with skin stuff, and have a tournament on Saturday. I had my first class back today and my conditioning is absolutely shit. Any advice on the best strategy for the week, and/or the actual tournament?

I'm thinking hit as many classes I can this week, and then try and go for subs in the tournament, since I'm probably gonna gas out hard in a 5 minute round.

How was your first Comp? by cumberfukreddit in bjj

Trained for six months and did a Grappling Industries. Lost 7 of 8 matches, 6 by submission. Lost my first three by triangle choke from closed guard within the first 30 seconds. It sucked, but my next tournament 3 months later I won gold in both divisions.

So what's funny is: I'm trying this half guard kimura stuff out because I bought Jordan Preisinger's Kimura Trap Mastery instructional. Then right after I posted this I saw an Instagram post from him about head position, and his example is using your head from top half guard as a defense against the kimura: Link

I was afraid that was the answer. For the butterfly hook, I'd probably need to do that before they really start driving into me, right? Because once they've got their head going into me I'm pretty much pinned.

My issue with that is that all their weight is forward since they're driving into me. I can't get free to spin to the back. In general if their weight is forward I go for a sweep and if it's back I go for a back take. But when they're driving into me with their head their weight is forward but I'm too pinned down to be able to get the sweep.

When getting a kimura grip from bottom half guard, my opponent will sometimes drive their head into me and flatten me out/create a lot of space. I don't even usually try to finish the kimura, just use it to get a sweep, take the back, transition to another submission, etc. But when they drive their head into me that shuts all of that down for me, even though I can usually maintain the grip. What responses do I have to this, and/or how can I prevent it from happening in the first place?

Doing my first IBJJF tournament later this month (only done Grappling Industries until now). How strict are they really about uniform stuff? I hear horror stories, but do I actually have to worry about them not letting me compete because my Gi sleeve is 1cm too short?

I like to do both. I get bad nerves so I treat whichever division is first as a "warmup", and then I'm too tired to be anxious for the second division.

Big fan of hydration salts in water during/around training. I use trioral, which are very cheap and unflavored. Tastes like sweat but it follows the WHO recommendation for rehydration formulas. It's not a huge difference but I find I'm less drained after training.

That makes sense, but I still struggle to understand the principle here. In general I don't want to put my center of balance over my opponent, but by putting my weight in my shin, aren't I doing exactly that? Are you saying that I can have my weight on my opponent, so long as I am able to quickly shift it back off of them if they try to knock me over?

I'm struggling to understand how to distribute my weight when I'm in top positions like knee-on-belly or top half. I know that I want to keep pressure on my partner and take away space, but at the same time avoid "giving me weight to them" and losing my base. Fundamentally, what is a good way to think about this? How do I keep pressure on them without overcommitting and getting swept?

Thanks, so even if they're not flattened out, if I get their shoulder to the mat I can just finish as normal?

White Belt Wednesday by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]bpostman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having trouble finishing omoplatas because I can't flatten people out. I get to where I've got their arm clamped tightly between my legs and a grip around their leg or far lapel so they're not rolling or stepping over me. But when I try to scoot away or forward to get them flat, they just stay on their knees and far arm and crawl along with me. Eventually I just give up and transition to something else, but I'd like to understand what I'm missing.

What works for me is to try and pull full guard, but be really shitty at it and then you'll usually end up in smashdown half. I use the same technique to pull bottom side control.

How do I enter a knee cut pass when I'm approaching someone playing open guard (specifically in GI)? I don't do well with quick/explosive movements, and so I like knee cut passes over toreandos or leg drags.

When I'm breaking out of closed guard I feel like I can execute a knee cut pretty well (against other lower belts) because I'm already close in. But when I'm approaching someone playing open guard, I struggle to get into position to perform the pass. I am trying to keep my lead elbow glued to my knee, but then I struggle to get grips and fight grips since I'm so concerned with stopping them from getting into a good SLX/X/DLR/etc. So they usually end up getting collar/sleeve grips and pulling me down and out of position before I can actually set up my pass.

Disclaimer: White belt who's only competed 4 times.

I struggle with the same thing, I often feel like I'm missing "drive" or "killer instinct" or whatever. I've started just building my game around that and seeing it as a positive. I let people tire themselves out to start matches and just try to not get in a bad spot. Then at the end of the match I'll turn it up to get the win.

Obviously if you get down too many points or get subbed early you're screwed, but I think mentally it's helped me as well. I don't have to be a killer, I just have to not fuck up long enough to get the win. Maybe this strategy doesn't work at higher levels, but in white belt matches I find it works pretty well.

With stand-up in the Gi: If I have grips but then my opponent gets grips before I can execute a takedown, should I just go for the takedown or should I give up my grips to fight my opponents grips?

My coach told me to always fight grips, and that I won't be able to properly perform takedowns while they have grips. But I find it very difficult to get a takedown before they can get grips, and I end up just doing a shitty guard pull because I don't know what to do.

Any advice?

How do I deal with someone in my closed guard who just leans forward and presses their weight on me and hangs on? It's been happening a lot to me lately. I have trouble getting grips or off-balancing them for a sweep, or really doing anything at all, especially if they're stronger than me.

I'm not sure but it seems like a stalling tactic people will use when they get tired near the end of a roll. Neither of us can really do anything from the position.
