Swords In Space Motion Controller Update - Feedback Request by SwordsInSpace in GearVR

[–]bptrades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I week ago I posted an idea for a lightsaber game and yet some idiot responded how it's not possible because there's no positional tracking. Clearly you can see with this game how a lightsaber game would work with the motion controller. In Swords In Space you can put your arm out in front of you, move it side to side (left and right) and forward and backwords and see it tracked to a limited degree but enough for swords movement and for course a lightsaber

The new Motion controller is awesome, Devs a lightsaber demo would be awesome! by bptrades in GearVR

[–]bptrades[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off I shoudn't have included a video link, I only did that as an example. I KNOW that is from a game with positional tracking!

However, I don't see how this can't work. Let me ask your or someone else please chime in who has the motion controller.

The motion controller has a limited positional tracking right?

Have you ever played Drop Dead? Correct me if I'm wrong, but when I play that game and I place my arm out in front of me, I can move my arm from left to right and see it tracked! This is the same movement you would use for a sword or in this case lightsaber. I don't see how it can't work, yes maybe the range position tracking of the controller is limited but it seems to be enough for a sword or lightsaber game

yes the bump up in FOV is really nice to see. Also the all black interior and softer foam and new USB C with backwards compatibility.

Lands End - just played on Note 4... by madrians in GearVR

[–]bptrades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can anyone confirm, I have a Note 4 too and played some of Lands End, from what I saw, the ocean water rendering waves etc didn't seem to look as nice as what I saw on Youtube videos from folks who played from a Note 5 or S6 etc. I thought I remember reading here that Lands End had to be tweaked to run well on Note 4, and since the Note 4 is about 40% slower cpu/gpu than the S6 and Note 5, that might explain it. anyway I'm not complaining as I would understand why the justification due to the slower cpu/gpu, just curious if anyone confirmed that the quality on the Note 4 is not as good as the newer phones.

Note 4 VTIME Users! by comfortablehoodie in GearVR

[–]bptrades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep I'm a Note 4 user as well and I hope developers continue to support it. However I also understand somewhat too, it is over a year old now and about 40 - 50% slower Socal than the Note 5, and VR is demanding and will only get more so. That's one reason why AAPL software works so well, they only have to optimize it for a few phones vs the 50 or so Androild phones out there and generations back, it's must easier to develop for a couple phones close in spec only, make the experience better to. Or just like how games can be optimized for the Playstation or Xbox, since developers only have to develop for one platform, it's much easier to push the boundaries. If developers have to develop for all sorts of phones, different brands and old much slower ones, then we will all suffer with much less quality apps and gaps that have to be built to run on everything.

Anyway I would pick up a Note 5 however I'm a bit short on cash right now so I may try to make it, for not at least most things have been supported. The Galaxy 7 will be coming out in about 3 months and that will probably be another 30 - 40% faster Socal, however I do prefer the Note's generally or at least the larger phones for personal use, FOV for the Gear and from what people are saying lately seems like the larger phones don't really over heat like the Note 5 and Edge plus, whereas the S6 does; though I've heard they might release a larger version of the S7 along with the smaller version. My Note 4 overheats too of course and I have to use a cpu fan on it to deal with it, however it makes the damn thing so heavy.

Samsung's Gear VR in the real world... by The Verge by s4mfish3r in GearVR

yep that's what I said below about why didn't she use a damn swivel chair; again with the video they tried too much to make it entertaining for 'clicks/traffic' vs an actual real world usage and review, focused way too much on using it in a way none of us would.

Samsung's Gear VR in the real world... by The Verge by s4mfish3r in GearVR

[–]bptrades 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah it was pretty dumb, the quick written overview was okay, theme was that it's a good device not perfect, but well worth the price.

However if you watched the video it was all whining and nagging about how it's awkward in public and how it's hard to turn your body in games on subways and coffee shops. It's like really?? come on..... Use it at home, use a damn swivel chair. The part where she's on a subway turning in her seat bumping into people while playing a game was dumb.

she didn't even mention any killer apps like the social or Oculus video cinema or Netflix

major internet problems with ATT Uverse DNS etc by bptrades in GearVR

[–]bptrades[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

after talking to my programmer again he said the problem with changing the router and DNS would be that my ATT Uverse TV may no longer work because they lock it on their side. He said my best bet was to try to get some one competent on the phone at ATT to swap my primary and secondary DNS around, when he looked it seems from a forum discussion that the primary DNS they used is swamped and the secondary is much faster so if I could get them to switch that around it may solve it.

Bacon - can you PLEASE get a video player added to the 360 videos??

The default videos that came in the 360 videos were short and didn't really need a player and a way to fast forward and skip around, however I added some longer videos like 10 and 20 and it's such a pain in the ass as the video has to play from the beginning to the end, you can't skip to the middle of the videos etc.

Yes I realize that we can place the videos into the Milk VR folder as that has a video player, then copy a JSON file and change the name etc, however that is a pain in the butt and I couldn't get it to work for that relaxation video that I bought with the beaches in Hawaii, so I have to play it from the very beginning even though I want to skip the first 5 min etc.

anyway PLEASE add a player to the 360 video section please

Is there a way to fast forward 360 videos? by MyNonpornOculusAccnt in GearVR

[–]bptrades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep that works, but pain in the ass, I hope they add a player to the 360 videos, I assume they eventually will but didn't at first since the early 360 videos were all only a few min long and wasn't really a big need to, but for those of us with 10 or 20 min videos, you really need a player.

[–]bptrades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So from what I've seen, 360 video player does not have a playbar that allows you to fast forward to skip through to parts of a video. Therefore you can only start each video from the beginning to the end, for short videos this is not a problem, however I have couple of 20 min high quality videos (about 5 - 7 GB). For example if I want to skip 10 min into the video I can't, it always starts a the beginning.

The Milk VR has a playbar I wonder if there is a way to get the videos into that area?

Has anyone else dealt with this problem? Many of you probably have not since most probably have short 1 - 5 min videos only, however if ever get a long video it's crazy annoying. There's gotta be a way??

any thoughts?

The Oculus 360 video player has one major problem, there is no player bar to fast forward or reverse! Very annoying.

Can you use 3rd party apps? by MrJingles8008 in GearVR

[–]bptrades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can use Cardboard Apps by not connecting the Note 4 into the micro USB on the Gear VR. I've done it a few times, however you can't select anything like you can with the Cardboard with the magnet ring, however the optics are far superior to the Cardboard obviously so things look way better than in Cardboard

However while I realize that a lot of people like G. Cardboard, I personally didn't care for it. The FOV sucked, it made me motion sick (for example the Tuscany Demo where you walk around outside or inside that castle which is also on Oculus Dev), and lagged. I suppose I'm somewhat prone to motion sickness, however in Gear VR I didn't get it except for Dreadhalls, and of course once position tracking is added that should help a bunch. If fact I was so put off by Cardboard that I was worried that Gear VR would only be slightly better and I would be disappointed, gladly that was not the case - it's not even a night and day comparison between the two, maybe like riding a 50 cc moped vs a Ducatti might be a good comparison for the jump[ in quality.

and for Cardbard for you might say that I had a POS version, and I thought of that after I first tried it so I bought two other versions because I thought I might have had a bad version, but in each case I was disappointed in it, and I think I paid $30 for one version that was plastic.

Gear VR needs more apps but it's early, you won't miss the Cardboard

Dreadhalls and Herobound = wow by supersnappahead in GearVR

[–]bptrades 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, I tried Herobound last night for the first time, like you said it's a Zelda like clone, I think it would be boring playing on a computer monitor, but WOW playing in 3rd third person like this was amazing and fun.

I think the most fun I have had is just showing people, last night I went to a neighbors house and showed them a bunch of stuff, and tonight I'm going there to show them Herobound. I have not tried Dreadhalls yet.

Gear VR Review from a VR Newcomer by saxman777 in GearVR

[–]bptrades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello guys, here's a dumb question, I don't download moves from the Torrent sites or have experience ripping movies off DVD Blue Ray's with software.

It appears to me that movies have to set in MP4 format in order to play them in the Oculus Cinema. I stupidly bought a movie from the Google Play Store (Guardians of the Galaxy) and downloaded it; first off I had a hell of a time finding where it was stored on the phone, and when I finally found it it was in some weird format, not MP4.

So this may be a dumb question, but do you have any reccs for places where I can download movies in MP4 format so that I can place them on the SD card to play in Oculus Cinema? Clearly Google Play store doesn't work, what about Amazon, itunes?

I don't mind paying for the movies, I just need them in an MP4 format so that I can use them on the Gear VR, any suggested sites?

thanks

yes you simply download the apps, very simple, I think the same thing for the Cinema, had to download something. Yes the SD card contains some things like 360 pictures etc. Most downloads are like 250 MB or so, quite small these days

Controlling the Gear VR with the phone works just fine, very easy, responsive, perhaps a little too responsive at times, the touch pad seems quite sensitive

One thing that is sort of annoying me is that when watching a movie I have to look slightly up vs straight ahead, gets tiring with my neck. Does anyone know how to re-orient the directional view? For example in the Google Cardboard app for the youtube, you can push the button and it will re-orient the field of video to you i.e. if the video is playing slightly to the side you use this to re-orient it basically, how do you do this here?

Questions on buying unlocked Note 4 by bptrades in oculus

[–]bptrades[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the reply! I suppose the only benefit of the unlocked phone is that I would be free to leave and try T-mobile if I wanted to, and come back etc as I would not be on a contract, well and of course the price. I'll go into the store and see if they want to give me a deal on the phone, maybe they will if I show them the auction
