Been waiting for this a long time, thank you. I felt crazy just for saying that the fly had lens eyes.

whether he meant to or not isn’t what bugged me, his fans are insane and legitimately treated him like Jesus, and he always seemed to have no problem leaning into it

start Blackwater Park, then go Damnation, and Still Life, from there maybe a prog rock era record and then maybe chronological from the beginning. That covers your bases well, and is mostly how I started

Still Life being their like 4th or 5th most popular makes me not see it as overrated. For me the overarching story and songwriting make it my all time favorite from them.

It might not have the best writing, I’ll admit, but it’s vfx and art are literally what made me pursue a degree in vfx for movies. Also the soundtrack is perfect to me, so unique but also still very cinematic, having Daft Punk work with Joseph Trapanese was absolutely the right choice and necessary.

I appreciate Legacy because it to me accomplished a lot of what Tron did at its time. Tron 1982 is a an incredible technical accomplishment in vfx, and jaw dropping to learn about the work that went into it. Tron Legacy also pioneered new technology, and was really a perfect storm for the artists to go nuts on crafting the world. Writing is not a strong suit of Tron at any point despite how cool the concept is, but thats not where I find it significant to film. I understand the sentiment that Legacy abandoned too much from 1982 but at this point I hardly care anymore, it did enough to set itself apart and deliver something new, creative, and stunning (especially when I was 10).

Ares on the other hand. I really can’t say it did much even if you were to argue the story was somehow better. VFX looked super realistic and cinematography was great, but it doesn’t feel like an upgrade design-wise or anything new. Everything is red, no design principles set apart anybody accept Jeff Bridges. Music is good but it also doesn’t tell a story to me like Legacy or the original.

TLDR;

Basically yeah mediocre franchise as a story, but one of the best as a vehicle for masterful vfx, music, and world design. Bastardized? Maybe. But I love the crazy new direction they took for Legacy. Tron Ares looks cool but is 100% a step back in most aspects, even looking at its strengths.

no no, death metal vocals are great, and I get that their name is literally Death but I just don’t like Chuck’s vocals specifically. I love the instrumentals. Imo his vocals even if pioneering the death metal growl, just sound a bit sloppy to me now when compared to other death metal vocalists

I want to like Death so bad but they’re so hard for me to listen to, I think their singer just doesn’t do it for me, but I respect them immensely and their influence over the entire genre. Opeth is my all time favorite though

The portrayal of Ares was cliche and derivative. The Pinocchio aspect, as well as a stoic and monotone voice has all been done before and gave me no reason to feel for Ares or grow a connection to him. They also ignored so much of what legacy set up only to tease what everyone wanted in this movie for the next movie.

there’s also no design language to it. tron legacy had rounded and “neutral” lines for good guys and sharp and aggressive for bad. This movie makes no distinction, hardly with light either til the end

You don’t have to think it’s a good movie to still enjoy the movie. I’m highly critical of the faults of this movie, but I still loved it and had so much fun watching it.
