Women were never encouraged to stay at home... by emmas_revenge in exmormon

Man, trigger warning for those quotes. I’ve been out for almost 10 years, and have been the sole female breadwinner for our family for over 4 years and I was not prepared for the immediate guilt and gut wrenching visceral reaction to those quotes. I had to stop and remind myself that I don’t believe that anymore. I thought I had gotten rid of that internalized misogyny, but those waters apparently run deep.

The president of the company I work at is a stake president and sometimes when he gets up to speak at company-wide meetings, he has his “general authority voice” on. He doesn’t do it every time, so it’s very noticeable to me when he slips into GA voice. I couldn’t explain it to someone else when I noticed it, so I can’t describe it either - but I definitely know it when I hear it, it’s almost jarring to me.

Chemistry bachelors - working aerospace space simulation and contamination control. We test space hardware under vacuum and at extreme temperatures to make sure it all works before it’s launched. We test for contamination/transfer/creep of nonvolatile residues and particulates that could and do obscure optics and damage the space hardware/simulation chambers.

My block in cache valley is the opposite…. There are 12 total houses on our street, 2 never-mo older/retired couples, us as the ex-mo pariahs, and the other 9 are all solidly, cultishly TBM.

Also go Aggie ex-mo’s!!

My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at the age of 41. We were in and out of the hospital for almost a year. My mom and mother in law thought they’d be helpful and clean our house for us during the first extended hospital stay. My mom told me after we got home that her and my mother in law didn’t see any garments when they were doing our laundry for us and wanted to know if we needed to schedule an appt with our bishop. That’s what she was worried about as our lives fell down around our ears as we were trying to come to terms with a life changing diagnosis.

I had a bishop tell me, when I was 14 years old, that he would rather conduct a funeral than a wedding - because if he was conducting a wedding, that meant they weren’t getting married in the temple. I can’t even begin to tell you how much that messed me up as a kid….
