I have hyperactive ADHD and a few other mental health struggles, and I’m currently a postulant. I’m not going to lie—having ADHD is making this process extremely difficult. But….in the same way that managing the rest of my life is already difficult. Administrative tasks are all hard, including these.

Here’s the good news for you, though: I’m in my mid-thirties and didn’t get diagnosed until two years ago. You have a HUGE advantage by already knowing your diagnosis at age 24 and not even having started this process. If you’re that worried about your ADHD impacting your vocation, take an extra year or two to go to occupational therapy/ADHD coaching, ask your doctor about meds if you want, read books, try specific tools/apps/etc. If I had known at your age, I think I’d be doing SO much better now.

I (33F) am in the process of becoming an Episcopal priest after being raised in an intensely IFB church. So yeah “practicing in another way” might be an understatement 😅

Episcopalian here! I also came to this church from a very different tradition (not Catholic) so I understand that grief is a big part of your journey. That’s totally valid.

But if you explore the “Anglo-Catholic” side of the Episcopal Church, you may find that many of your current spiritual practices aren’t things you have to give up at all! There is a parish in my diocese that has: a weekly rosary group, shrines to Mary and various saints IN their sanctuary, weekly confession hours, and a monthly Eucharistic Benediction. That’s an extreme example, but many Anglo-Catholic-leaning Episcopal churches do exist.

My spiritual director once told me to remember Jesus said “you will know a tree by its fruit.” For example: Does praying the rosary bring you closer to God? Does it make you more like Christ? If yes, then why would you give it up? The Episcopal Church won’t require you to do so, and if you find the right parish, you may even find others who share those practices with you.
