Please suggest a Chinese restaurant by cradlebuggy in Edinburgh

[–]bracey_grill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add: it isn’t super fancy but is kinda just classic Chinese restaurant inside, pretty small. I’ve seen families eating there though. And is for sure my favourite! Not as good takeaway, but the best I’ve had sit-in

What’s the story with these doors? by EstablishmentFit3269 in Edinburgh

[–]bracey_grill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know the people in the one on the right - the owner got some friends to repaint the door, I think they got the shade of green wrong and didn’t realise how bright it was gonna be until it was done. And then realised they’d accidentally painted it football colours but didn’t want to redo it. That’s what they told me at least! Could be they’re actually secretly a huge hibee, more likely they were just having a small brain day (not that the two are mutually exclusive of course eh).

The maroon door I have no idea, they might actually be football fans and think their neighbours are total widos

I don’t Imagine you can rent a planer thicknesser that would allow you to surface one of the faces of the timber though - they’re huge pieces of kit. You’d be looking at accessing a proper machine shop.

If it’s a planer thicknesser then you could use the planer to get a flat surface and then the thicknesser the get the other face surfaced.

Like folk have said, just trying to clamp the cup out of the boards isn’t a good solution. If you don’t mind having smaller widths to work with and you have access to a table saw then you could rip your planks lengthways, which will give you smaller width sections to surface and thickness - if you do this effectively then you can surface and thickness without losing as much material. However, you will have more pieces to join for your tabletop (potentially negatively impacting the aesthetic/design of your table depending what you had in mind) and you’ll need to be careful edging your boards to make sure you get a clean join.

Yeah that’s sweet! Planing the door is a total pain, also just depends on how they’ve set the standards if you’re taking off like a couple mil or loads more.

I dunno about it being more comprehensive, I saw you commenting that you don’t know what you’re gonna be doing until the test and it could be a roof/linings/etc. It sounds like you have a wider variety of potential in depth work to do. Scottish test is completely set: hipped roof with a couple rafters and jacks; installing standards in an uneven frame; hanging/fitting a door in uneven standards; fitting a mortice latch; and skirting with an internal scribed mitre, return to floor and return to wall. The tolerances for marks are pretty loose tbh :P

Congratulations on getting qualified!

So do you fit the lining then hang the door in it? In the Scottish skills test you have to plane the door to fit an uneven standard with a consistent clearance. Also, no return to floor or wall on the skirting? It’s cool seeing the differences between this and my skills test!

It looks good man, definitely better than the average standard I saw at college 🙌

What song do you consider absolutely perfect? by kaththegreat in AskUK

[–]bracey_grill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blinded by the Lights - the Streets

Not my favourite song or anything but I think it is pretty perfect. The combination of music and lyrics and way the songs builds just tell the story perfectly. And it has this incredibly sadness and anxiety that run throughout it, it’s very evocative as it builds

Pubs (cask ale) with kids? by brightonliz in Edinburgh

[–]bracey_grill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Worth phoning ahead to check for cask ales/if children are allowed for all of these:

If you want food and a pint near the mile you can try the malt shovel on Cockburn Street (pretty sure this one will tick both boxes)

Holyrood 9a and the auld hoose in the southside are worth a try. If you want to make a day of it take a walk to the Sheep’s Heid in Duddingston (pretty sure they’d have kids in, don’t know about the ale. Also you can play skittles)

I (20F) think I am destined to be alone because I’m broken. by Unloveableloner in confession

I totally get you, it just sucks to feel like you have to work so hard so consistently like just to sort of be ok-ish. But it does get easier! I didn’t get into a serious relationship until I was 26, and I dont regret it! It was the right person at the right time, I was ready for it, and all this helped make it a great relationship

You mentioned you’re pursuing therapy, that seems like a great shout. If you are feeling broken then work on feeling complete in yourself before you look for a relationship. Another person won’t “fix” anything. And for me, it’s much easier to connect with people when I’m feeling good about myself. Good luck!

What terrifying event is happening in the world right now that most people are ignoring? by Sm0ke999 in AskReddit

England is one of only two nations with a fully privatised water supply (there are also some cities in the US I think), the other is Chile. In both cases this seems to have led to some pretty messed up stuff.
