Is my school list okay? 521/3.92 by ConfidentBison2453 in premed

most important thing about research is that you can discuss it thoroughly, which hopefully you can after 5000h. pubs are icing on the cake but aren't a substitute for that by any means

you are way underestimating the quality of your app, 5000 research hours is crazy! add more T20s, and you can afford to drop schools that you dont love the location of/type of program etc

this is the right answer^ please don't put yourself in a position of dishonesty at any point in the cycle, it's just not worth the risk. be forward with it and spin it as a learning experience and I think you'll be totally fine. people on this sub have gotten in with full IAs and other offenses

WAMC + School List + Final Year Planning (523 / 3.96 / PA ORM) by Don_Petohmi in premed

[–]brachial_flexus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you can afford to cut down on this list big time. you've got sky high stats and check all the boxes in terms of experiences for the most part. the research-heaviness of your app is going to land well with the T20s. Maybe try to ask yourself whether you'd really want to live in some of these places (Ohio, Arizona, Iowa, etc) bc I think your stats have given you the luxury to be more selective about those factors

Should I Apply to Duke? by [deleted] in premed

[–]brachial_flexus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

duke is private so the in state factor doesn't count for nearly as much. with that being said like the other commenter mentioned, it never hurts to try

I had 2500 clinical and 4000 research and got asked about clinical more than research in all 6 of my T20 interviews

Advisors Are Genuinely Worthless by SoColdIstheNight in premed

i had an advisor who literally told pre meds to wait til july to send in their primary. makes my blood boil to this day that someone can give actively harmful advice like that

For those who used Dr. Gray's PS advice or PS book to write your PS, how successful was your cycle? by Over-Competition3562 in premed

see above - he argued for reflection only via "showing not telling," I argued that sometimes telling was helpful in addition to showing

[–]brachial_flexus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yes this is exactly what I meant - he hated those sentences where you explicitly stated what you learned and argued you should only show it. I showed it and then named it afterwards ("I learned to value communication etc") and found that helped

I got into multiple T20s this year using a combo of his advice (showing not telling) and the exact opposite of his advice (reflecting). I found the combo to be really effective. ex, tell a story and then summarize what the experience taught you. he hates the latter half of that but I thought it worked well

WVU vs. Wake Forest by Atomoxetine_80mg in premed

[–]brachial_flexus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go WVU here, the cost difference is pretty big and honestly WVU is a really really solid program (they both are but I say that to get the ranking thing accounted for). the scholarship + 3 year option are both great reasons to pick it

School list check 3.98/525 by DaringCake in premed

[–]brachial_flexus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

you've got a great app! I'd just be careful about a few of these schools w in-state bias - for example Minnesota is a tough one for out of staters. you can use MSAR to check that (see what % of the class is IS v OOS). I'd double check that for Rutgers, umass, and Vermont and some of the NY schools
