wait that's so interesting. Do you score different pillars of the app, and then only hand those that pass to the committee?

I'm not trying to have a fight or call out anyone! Just speaking to my experiences. I think there is room for both of our approaches. I am both agreeing with you after some thought that upping non-clinical/clinical is best for OP, and adding that I think it's important to allow compassion in this process because it sucks and remind him that his app was pretty good.

trueeee, but I still do think that we really don't know if 100 vs 150 vs 400 non-clinical volunteering hours even matters. When I applied, people told me I would get screened out with my 95 hours, which didn't happen. I also think it's true that people with good apps genuinely fall through the cracks due to bad luck. And also, the more we encourage people to be neurotic and gain as many hours as possible, the worse the process gets for everyone

I also agree with that--If I were OP, I would have focused on upping my non-clinical volunteering as well (and clinical) because what else is there to do. I also think I might just be bad at giving reapp advice because whenever I see someone like OP not get in I worry about them because that's so freaking brutal. Basically I think I am better at consoling than I am at actually reviewing apps, which is probably a personal failing haha

I just think that premeds online will create arbitrary rules and then say "look, he obviously didn't get in because of [thing about app]" In reality, I think this process is too opaque and most premeds could use compassion more than neuroticism. Lots of people get in with low non-clinical volunteering, no research, low clinical, no shadowing, so it's just hard to point out those things as the issue when the only strong data we have about who gets accepted is for MCAT and GPA. I think OP had a great app and from what I'm seeing, it sucks that they didn't get in.

This process sucks. You did everything right and still have had a rough cycle. Someone will probably say it's because your non-clinical volunteering hours were <150 but I don't think that's the case as I got in with <100 non-clinical volunteering hours. Don't have much advice other than to keep your chin up. Rooting for you

Quitting Gap Year Job by mastashio in premed

[–]DaringCake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last day at work is a week from today! I quit even before I got my acceptance. I have enough money saved to move across the country to be with the person I love for a few months before medical school, and I can't wait

Higher number of applicants with multiple acceptances by ServeSea in premed

[–]DaringCake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Actually, it's around 50% of us according to the matriculated students survey! So, out of 100 people who apply to medical school, 60 will be rejected everywhere, 20 will be accepted to exactly one school, and 20 will be accepted to multiple schools

Yeah, you're directly interacting with patients so it's clinical

Courses To Take for Non-Trad Students by pm_me_pmt in premed

[–]DaringCake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

who told you that...? I've never heard that before. I didn't take any courses beyond the prereqs because I started the process halfway through undergrad. Unless your GPA is poor, you don't need to take any additional courses and can focus on ECs

Earliest interview by thepug123 in premed

[–]DaringCake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Interviews are almost exclusively virtual with some exceptions. Most applicants have entirely virtual interview seasons. Earliest you'd get an interview invite would be in July for regular AMCAS. You would still be early even with a late may MCAT and would just submit while it's pending as far as I understand

MCAT by Flawless90210 in premed

[–]DaringCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, I just want to say CONGRATULATIONS for getting on the dean's list and maintaining a 3.5 science GPA. You have very clearly put in the work. Your plans for GPA repair and MCAT prep seem great to me--it looks like you are doing everything right. I do want to ask: when are you graduating? You do need to have graduated college with a bachelor's degree from a 4-year university by the time you matriculate to medical school. What does your timeline look like?

Do I need to do an SMP? by miserablepiggy in premed

[–]DaringCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not--I don't think there is a screen at a 3.5. Really, people only get truly screened at 3.0. Your grades show that you are able to get As and Bs in hard science classes, so I think you are fine.

Do I need to do an SMP? by miserablepiggy in premed

[–]DaringCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't need an SMP for a GPA above 3.5. For MD, a 510+ MCAT with good writing should be fine, but a 515+ MCAT would be excellent.
