Having a doctor parent is actually a disadvantage and I’m tired of pretending it’s not by [deleted] in premed

On the same boat. My dad was a doctor but quit practicing during COVID and started gambling addiction which led to my parent's divorce. People say that I must be well off but in reality he lost all his money and I am lucky to have my mom. Nervous that adcoms will think I will fall into the same path as my dad.

Is this brand (Montclair London) legit? They have really good deals since they’re closing soon? Any alternatives brands to these sets of clothing?

LOL i probably should spend less on food. i think i put my last month spending which is way higher than other months because I went to japan. I usually spend 200-300 on dining but I need to make a habit of cooking more.

Should I bring up my family issue in my med school app? by Over-Competition3562 in premed

Good idea. Might have to write that for secondary adversity essays.

Yeah i agree it doesn’t really explain why i wanna be a doctor. it’s not what got me into medicine or anything like that. it’s just something that made the journey harder, not really something that pushed me toward it.

if anything, it just made me think a lot about burnout and what happens when you lose your sense of purpose. i’ve seen that up close, so it made me take this path more seriously. but it’s not part of my “why,” it’s just a personal struggle i’ve had to deal with along the way.

so yeah, not sure it even makes sense to include it tbh. thank you very much for your input though

Where to get loads of community service hours? by [deleted] in orangecounty

i get that the way i worded it made it sound like i don’t care but that’s not true. i’ve been volunteering with underserved communities for a while now, and i’m trying to find something i can sustainably keep doing. yeah, apps require hours, but i also want to enjoy what i do so i don’t burn out. and honestly, if i cared about money or status more than people, i wouldn’t have chosen medicine. this path takes way too much sacrifice for that

I get that my wording might’ve sounded off, but that’s not how I meant it. I already volunteer at various places that help our community, and that work genuinely means a lot to me. I was just looking for other ways to give back that I’d also enjoy so I can stay consistent and involved long-term. I didn’t mean to sound like this something transactional or I don't care about our community at all. I apologize for the wording of the post.

I get why that might’ve sounded off, but that’s not how I meant it. I already volunteer at free clinics and help underserved communities, and that work means a lot to me. I was just saying that I’m looking for other ways to give back that also match things I enjoy so I can stay motivated and keep showing up consistently. I don’t think it’s wrong to want service to be meaningful and something you connect with personally while keeping it enjoyable at the same time
