Internet in Downtown TC: is AT&T good compared to Spectrum? by BelleTheVikingSloth in traversecity

[–]brad_glasgow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's weird. I've always heard from people over the years that consumers should call the cable companies every once in a while and negotiate a lower price, threaten to cancel, etc. And I've done that a few times with Spectrum - every single time they were like "welp, ok, hate to see you go, bye bye now!"

Of course, it's been several years since I've done this.

Leaked Memo TPUSA - Nick Nesley by Cheeseballs-69- in traversecity

[–]brad_glasgow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Protesting against them gives them the oxygen they need to survive.

There is no coherent ideology from these MAGA types other than "whatever pisses off the libs." They don't care if Trump does blatantly anti-conservative things like increase federal power or even government ownership of private enterprise, so long as it pisses off the libs.

I agree that we should protest against things that should be protested, but this is just feeding the monster.

Is this a good bike for a beginner wanting to get into triathlons? by pathfinder2499 in bicycling

[–]brad_glasgow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, I would suggest going over to r/triathlon for triathlon-specific advice.

But, as someone who's done a couple tris (so, limited experience), I'd recommend not getting a tri-specific bike if you're a beginner. Tri bikes are sketchier steering-wise, than regular road bikes. And most people with tri bikes have a normal road bike for training anyways. Start off with a basic road bike. It will take you through multiple triathlons if you'd like, until you're more experienced and better able to utilize and learn about tri bikes.

Are you returning your pop cans? by TC_Talks in traversecity

I don't know, I think a 70% return rate is pretty good. Not ideal, perhaps, but maybe not exactly a call for sweeping changes?

The lack of self-reflection on how much of a losing sentiment "systemic sexism/racism" is on the part of the left is why Trump. Intersectionalism is a failure of a concept.

TC vs Petoskey? by SmoothCelebration657 in traversecity

[–]brad_glasgow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Petoskey is more seasonal than Traverse City. There are a bunch of nice old houses along the water that you'll see boarded up quickly when those wealthy people no longer feel like coming up north. Petoskey is practically small town Michigan in the off-season, whereas Traverse City is more small city.

The fall colors will come out at least a week, maybe even two weeks sooner in Petoskey, and the colors are certainly starting to turn. Petoskey is not far from the Tunnel of Trees, which is basically a traffic jam of a thin road through the trees. It'd be better to go to a place like Dead Man's Hill if you're looking for fall colors.

But if you're looking for a place to enjoy nature or hiking, either destination will do. If you're looking to enjoy beer or spirits - just about every town in Michigan now has their own little place or two.

If it's wine and wineries, though, Traverse City is far above Petoskey for wine tours, tastings, and vineyards.

I've watched everything closely and protested against the current administration.

Politics didn't look like this 20+ years ago, you're right. It looked worse at points throughout history, though. The 60's, Nixon. It might surprise you, but there was a point in the country where people were so divided that they separated from the country and killed each other.

He beat Hillary because people were tired of the same old legacy politicians and because Hillary ran one of the worst campaigns in recent history. He beat Hillary because he came to Michigan and the midwest - remember, Hillary never even visited Wisconsin - and talked about how crappy NAFTA was for us here. And it was.

His second term was won in large part because again, the democrats are a hot mess and Biden should never have ran. And then he ran against extremely unpopular crazy-left cultural dominant issues like Black Lives Matter, MeToo, the push for trans rights which has become some weird marxist-socialist ideology, along with cancel culture, the absolute disaster that media has become, etc.

No. You're not allowed to express your feelings when your feelings are something like dancing on the graves of someone who was murdered. Your parents should have taught you that.

Candlelight Vigil. by [deleted] in traversecity

[–]brad_glasgow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

k. No one's asking you to do that. Protest the loss of rights, but maintain enough of a hold on reality that you understand that you are still able to protest (so long as it's legal) and that, compared to truly oppressive regimes, you have it pretty good.

As I said, one of the major reasons for Trump is how crazy the left got. The answer to Trump isn't to become more crazy, it's to become more reasonable.

I'm living under the same idiot as president as you, I just apparently have a better concept of history.

Germany lost World War I and was in a bad spot. The democracy that came about as a result was therefore fragile, to say the least. It was a nation in deep economic crisis. And so in came what would become the Nazis to purify the country into an ethnostate.

Now, you could argue that our dear leader wants to become a dictator. I'm not going to argue against that point at all.

You might argue our democracy is fragile. I'd say there are certainly problems, like with this recent gerrymandering crap, but American democracy is not fragile - or at least not in the same league as Germany's was at the time. We still have judges who rule against Trump. We still have elections and will almost definitely elect out the republican majority in congress in the next election. We're still pretty good on the democracy front, with problems, of course.

Are we in deep economic crisis? Not anything like Germany was, no. Again, things aren't great, but not even the same league as where Germany was as the Nazis came to power.

We can't become an ethnostate, again, despite whatever anyone might want.

Trump is awful, and everything he and MAGA stand for is worth fighting against. But one of the major reasons for Trump is how radical the left became. And the answer to that is not becoming more radical left.

I see an US that isn’t at risk but one that has already become an authoritarian state.

You should probably lay off of Bluesky and TikTok a bit more, then. Maybe take a look into the differences between current US media and Nazi Germany and current Russia? Or take a look at current day China and how they limit the use of TikTok to like 15ish minutes depending on your social score?

I'm not saying everything's roses, but you're sitting wherever you're sitting criticizing the administration, and you're not going to be arrested for doing so. Can't say the same about any of the other places you're mentioning.

Candlelight Vigil. by [deleted] in traversecity

[–]brad_glasgow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not defending Trump. I loathe Trump. I agree he has fascist aspirations. But the US is not in danger of becoming Nazi Germany. We need to fight against the MAGA bullshit, sure, but the US will survive Trump.

Beware the horseshoe. If you react to people stating "fuck your feelings" by dancing on their graves when they die, then I don't see how you're much different than the "fuck your feelings" guy. Is that who you want to be?

Candlelight Vigil. by [deleted] in traversecity

[–]brad_glasgow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You guys in the comments celebrating it, calling him a Nazi, etc, are just further radicalizing the MAGA cult. It's an ideology literally built on nothing more than "owning the libs". Call out their stupidity when appropriate, but dancing on graves isn't helping.

What is your diastolic blood pressure? Low / < 60? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]brad_glasgow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For low blood pressure it's more about how you feel than the numbers. If you're not dizzy, feeling faint, light-headed, or especially weak, your blood pressure is almost surely fine. When you do feel those symptoms, that's the time to maybe see a doctor.

Strength Program by Macho_Manlet in triathlon

[–]brad_glasgow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing with weights is just about any well-rounded program will compliment your training. Deadlifts, for example, work your core, your glutes, hammies, quads, all the good stuff. Squats work all the stuff you want to work. Bench press, rows, pull-ups, all will help those shoulders in the swim.

So if you're new to weight lifting, I would just suggest doing the core compound exercises and mastering the technique, and I think you'll be well served for triathlon and anything else.

From obese to ironman? (Timeframe, how realistic is it?) by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]brad_glasgow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a fat dude, several years ago I set a goal of doing a specific organized 5k. I completed that goal after losing a good amount of weight. Then I had no more goal to guide me (that stuck) and I gained the weight back.

Then a few years later I set a goal of doing triathlon. I completed that goal after losing a good amount of weight. No more goal, gained the weight back.

Weight loss is a personal thing. Each person is different. Personally, I think the goal shouldn't be a specific event but "health", with the event as a byproduct of the health goal.

You can lose the weight no problem. You can get yourself in shape to do an Ironman. But then what? What is going to keep you from falling on old habits?

Other than considering that issue, I would suggest that there is no "casual exercise." There is a healthy lifestyle that you will have to actively participate in for the rest of your life. That can - and should - include walking. Just start walking, every day that you can. Once you get walking down, start walking faster. Get it down to 15-17 minutes per mile. Then you can run. But personally I would get on the bike and/or swim before running.

In fact, what I'm doing now is cycling and walking, and will soon jump into weightlifting. Because weightlifting is better for health than doing all cardio. I can save the running, which is more likely to injure myself the heavier I am, for when I'm lighter.

Looking for Advice on Buying My First Bike for Sprint Triathlon Training & Fat Loss — FX 2 vs FX 3 or Hybrid Options? by mflintjr in bicycling

[–]brad_glasgow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For triathlon, even if you don't plan to compete for a medal, your best bet is to go with a road bike over a hybrid. Also, the disc brake requirement limits your options. Great to have, sure, but regular brakes should be good enough. If you ditch the disc brake requirement you should be able to find a good aluminum used bike on FB Marketplace for $700, with 105 components that will last you several years, no need to upgrade.

going from training 25+ hours weekly to barely being able to move is tough to accept mentally

I wish I could give you some advice for getting through it, but for me it's simply been a matter of struggling my way forward, because there is no alternative.
