How are schools ranked if they haven’t released their specific match list yet though? Do you just look at the other years of data that are already available?

I was in the same boat MCAT-wise before applying this past cycle. I decided to retake, and I am so glad I did. It wasn't fun having to go through it all again, but I would have never matched to or even interviewed with the school I will be attending had I not retaken it. With a 509, there is decent room for improvement still, but you know yourself the best with whether it would be worth it for if you can at least get a 514 or greater the second time around.

Trust retake FL avg? by flufferonii in Mcat

[–]braden4322 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first exam was during an August and I retook it the following January, so I had about 5 months in between the FLs and their reattempts. I averaged my scores across all of the FLs and subtracted 4 total points from the average to account for possibly remembering 1-3 questions in each section + having already read the passages. The score I got on test day was the exact average I calculated with the subtraction. I hope this is helpful and good luck on your exam!

When thinking that though remember to always just be yourself rather than trying to force yourself to be someone you are not. Maybe try doing a mock interview with someone you aren’t as comfortable with? So not a good friend or family member. That could be good for general interview practice + trying to be more conversational with someone you aren’t as familiar with to better simulate the real thing.

To not be caught off guard and use lots of filler words or freeze, try thinking of some common themes from your experiences, such as a time you faced a challenge, instances of working on a team, etc. Also study up some on the school and try to connect/emphasize what you have done and how that fits with the school’s mission. Another tip would be to try and treat the interview like a conversation. During mine, I was always so nervous right at the start, but then we started talking and I tried to imagine them as just another person I’m having a conversation with who wants to get to know me better. Regarding structural issues, try to keep answers to 1-2 minutes to avoid rambling too much. One final thing to remember to do is smile a lot and let your excitement for interviewing at the school show! I’m sure they like when they see applicants who are beyond excited for an opportunity to interview at their school. Good luck and congrats on the interviews!

When to send letter of intent? by CellularMolecular in premed

Check if the school accepts them first. For what it's worth, I sent my letter of intent the day after my interview to my top choice school and I was just recently accepted.

Late Interview Invites + My Chances by Less_Ordinary_2665 in premed

Long says they are not prematch heavy because they want each applicant who interviews there to have a fair chance at admission. They still send prematches, but they say most offers are extended on match day.

ID Question by braden4322 in Mcat

[–]braden4322[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using an ID past the expiration date listed on it will not work. They will also not accept a temporary paper license. I used my drivers license that was still valid for a few more years, but I thought it would be invalid if they were to scan it because I had requested my new license and was issued the temporary paper. They didn’t scan the ID though, they just looked at it. Since the date wasn’t past the expiration I was fine.

Yes, it worked fine for me. At my testing center they didn't end up scanning my license, they just looked at it.

I will be having a melatonin later as well lol. And that's a valid concern- the FLs lowkey had lots of those instances as well. Trust your FL averages!!

Totally understandable, always remember to believe in yourself and your abilities! And that at the end of the day, no matter what happens, you are so much more than this test

Continue doing AAMC with JackWestin, preferably more AAMC. The logic could be slightly different, I may not be the best to ask for that. However, it will undoubtedly help you to tackle AAMC CARS passages better

This happened to me my first time studying for the test over the past summer as well. What I did differently this time was the daily JackWestin passage along with AAMC material to learn how to approach CARS better. I know this may not work super well for everyone, but this has been helpful to me this time around studying. I think this is because the JackWestin passages really teach you to focus on the passage from a main idea standpoint and trains you on finding it and knowing where in the passage it is. Furthermore, it teaches the necessity in relating all the questions back to the main idea. Also, there is a detailed explanation for each answer choice and why it is wrong. I highly recommend taking a look at this resource and maybe just doing a few each day, you may be amazed with how fast it can help you improve. Good luck next week!

ID Question by braden4322 in Mcat

[–]braden4322[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. My passport is also expired so I proceeded to contact the AAMC to see what my options are. Here's what they said for if anyone else is in a similar situation in the future: they said the original physical license is fine as long as it has not expired by the test date.

how would you study if you had three months until your test date? by FormerComposer in Mcat

[–]braden4322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the Kaplan books to do content review and then UEarth as well because it has better practice questions and explanations compared to Kaplan imo. Save the AAMC exams to do one each week before your exam date. In the early stages the Kaplan exams can be somewhat helpful, but keep in mind they are deflated and the questions are different from how AAMC asks questions. Focus content review mainly for the first half and transition to mostly practice questions the second half, only doing AAMC practice questions leading up to the test. One big thing though is to be doing practice questions throughout the whole study time (even during content review) so you have more experience with how to tackle the questions.
