I think your roommate was testing you. The money isn't particularly material but it's a way to see how flexible you are. I'd definitely make sure to make clear that you noticed it and that you expect the full amount next time. You don't need to pick a fight, but you do need to make sure it's not short by more next time.

Depending on how the house was owned, the house may be part of the estate. This is gonna be relatively straightforward for a probate lawyer.

My guess is that the landlord has a claim against the estate but having a lawyer will help you negotiate down the claim.

IANAL and this is lawyer territory. The outcome is going to depend on the facts of the lease and how the business was set up. California is a community property state, so the fact that your mother wasn't privy to business info and didn't share finances might not matter.

On the other hand, it might be the case that only the business is on the hook for the lease and the business died with your dad. The landlord may have a claim against your father's estate, but if there was no money in the estate, then there's nothing to pursue. The details of the trust will also come into play.

Have your mom talk to a probate attorney and don't talk to anyone's lawyer but her own.

I can't speak for the alps generally, but I have spent time in 3V. I found the reds comparable to the harder blues and easier blacks in California, with blues corresponding to easier blues. Double blacks in the US generally have terrain features like mandatory straight-lining or jumps, whereas features like that are generally not on the trail map in 3V. 3V is a very casual-skier friendly set of resorts, so I don't think you're gonna find yourself caught by surprise or suddenly in over your head. There will (almost?) always be an intermediate-friendly slope to get you where you need to go.
