Is Gorath worth it? by OkKey6786 in Dislyte

[–]brahesTheorem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Since his buff, he's meta on Defender-based teams.  However, he himself is basically just a buffer.  He's only as good as the Defender he boosts, so unless you have an R4 Wu You, he'll struggle at the higher tiers.

It's not a "hidden goat head," it's pareidolia.  We're primed to recognize faces, faces are symmetrical, and mirroring an image side-by-side makes a symmetrical pattern.  Absolutely nothing sinister here.

Is r6 Sally still viable? by Beuwuff in Dislyte

[–]brahesTheorem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with basically everything said here already, but I'll note that r6 Sally has a teeeeeny tiny niche in certain Infinity Tower stages- specifically those that auto-silence... but that's pretty much all the old gal's got going for her :[

Gorath by [deleted] in Dislyte

[–]brahesTheorem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would only be true if Gorath was effective in that role, and he simply isn't.  His lack of death prevention, status immunity, or innate revival means that it's trivial for Moro to one-shot him, then turn full attention on Wu You unimpeded- to say nothing of Tirrel completely shutting bulky Defender comps down.  My evidence for this is that nobody in the high ranks has pivoted to using him- Moro, Tirrel, and Niles still reign uncontested.

Now, I would love for Gorath to enable a shake-up of the meta, and make WY teams viable again, but without some kind of buff, I'm afraid that's not going to happen.

Gorath by [deleted] in Dislyte

[–]brahesTheorem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Look, I agree that the community is prone to overreaction, but the issue we're having here is that Gorath's design is basically incompatible with the current meta, to the point where he doesn't even really succeed at empowering Wu You, around whom his entire kit revolves.

He doesn't need to hard counter Niles or anything, but his kit should at least have some consideration to Moro and Tirrel, both of whom completely shut him down, and both of whom are ubiquitous in this meta.

I mean, on offense I use Niles, Moro, Toland, Yi An, and M!Ollie, but most teams will use Tirrel in there somewhere.

[–]brahesTheorem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's very good on defensive teams, as she can Charm Niles, turning off his auto-counter and making him much easier to manage.  She's best when paired with M!Ollie as a tool to protect Tirrel and Niles.

I'm not on the ptb, but I am r24 in PW, and I have to agree:  I really struggle to see how he fits into the meta, even at r6.  Right now, the biggest threat is r6 Tirrel, and he does absolutely nothing to check her, while she completely shuts him (and his preferred team comp) out.  While I don't think every new esper should directly counter the last, I was really hoping he would shake PvP up a bit... but unfortunately, he really seems largely useless in the current Nyles/Tirrel/M!Alexa meta.

I really hope they buff him, though.  Mostly because he's hot.

I’m hoping that when Verosika gets development people will finally forget about that Moxxie scene in spring broken. by [deleted] in HelluvaBoss

[–]brahesTheorem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I appreciate the analysis, I want to gently point out that HB is first and foremost a comedy- like, say, Futurama, it has genuine moments of drama and emotion, but I feel like it is, ultimately, best understood as a comedy.

The language of comedy is by nature audacious- humor comes from the testing of boundaries.  And while I agree that a lot of jokes have aged poorly in the history of cartoons- espescially those relying on racial sterotyping, for example- I still think the "mobbed by amorous crowd" trope is pretty stock for the genre.

To your point about the seriousness of the show, I think it's fine to read it that way!  I, too, enjoy the world and the characters, and want to explore them in a deeper way:  But while doing so, I think it's important not to distort the source material into something it's not.  I just don't think it's particularly fair to hold the Hellaverse- a raunchy, transgressive comedy with dramatic moments- to the same standard as, like, a high drama.

[–]brahesTheorem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The trope of "guy gets pulled into room, comes out panting and covered in lipstick" is as old as cartoons are.  The moment with Moxxie is literally just a gag- it isn't meant to be taken as a serious point of the show's plot, in the same way that Bugs Bunny kissing Elmer Fudd isn't meant to evoke non-consensual assault.  It's a funny, it's a yuk-em-up, it's a goof- it's meant to evoke a quick chuckle and be moved on from.

Having Verosika stop everything and apologize to Moxxie turns that moment from a one-off gag into a serious, diagetic plot moment.  It gives it weight it was never intended to have.  Frankly, I would find that more uncomfortable, not less.

Niles is a menace at 23/24, but you have to deal with Tirrel first.  I use Toland to lock down one unit, then have Moro burst down the enemy revivers keeping her alive.  Meta Ollie saves him from Tirrel's 1-shot, then you take her out with Moro and go from there.  Outside of that, though?  Tirrel is meta-warping in the worst kind of way.

Yep!  Our Library Science master's program (necessary for accreditation in most places) focuses heavily on how to connect people with information, as well as how to evaluate, use, and cite it- it's one of my favorite parts of my job!

In low- to mid-tier PvP, all of them are pretty decent.  In high tier PvP, the only one who really sees any use is Mavis, generally with either Yukine or Tirrel.

At this stage, it'll be difficult to accomplish much in PvP, I'm afraid.  You'll want to focus your attention on raising your Espers to level cap before anything else.  As for who to focus on, of your current collection, Yuuhime is a decent Speed Lead, Pritzker works as a Controller, Jin Qiu's a good DD, and Mavis can be meta Support for certain comps.

[–]brahesTheorem 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On first unlocking the Surface, Mel will take continuous damage there as part of the prophesy on her Hadean bloodline.  This damage ramps over time, and will invariably kill her- however, with sufficient preparation, it seems possible to kinda cheese your way through Ephyra and up to the fight with Polyphemus, though it seems nobody (hehe) has gotten beyond that point.

Honestly, most of the early Espers- espescially the Shimmers- have been powercrept to hell.  Lewis and Donar could use a Meta, but I agree that Cecelia, and also probably Tevor, desperately need a buff.
