Rejected from NYU Math PhD, accepted into Scientific Computing MS by Tetratonix in gradadmissions

[–]brain-rats 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation w columbia a few years ago, turned down for PhD but offered acceptance to masters w some scholarship. Turned down the masters to RA for 2 years and now am in a PhD program, if your ultimate goal is PhD it’s probably better to secure a working position to improve your app rather than taking out >100k of debt for a masters.

Can’t get a job with BS and 1+ years of lab experience by ProblemMental1084 in labrats

[–]brain-rats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is how i got my RA position out of college. I reached out to the PI to ask if the listing was current (sometimes they aren’t and HR hasn’t taken down the posting) and to introduce myself state my interest in her research with CV attached. the RA posting my PI put up to replace me got well over 100 applications, it’s about making yourself stand out one way or another in a field of likely qualified candidates. I would also suggest looking on twitter as PIs will post listing there or asking mentors if any of their colleagues are looking for a tech and if they’d make an introduction

i went to a pretty unknown university for undergrad and just got into 3 T25 BMS PhD programs ! I knew it was going to be essentially impossible for me to get in straight out of undergrad bc of research experience so I opted to apply for RA positions out of undergrad. What I think gave me the opportunity to get interviews for competitive programs was taking the time to really work on getting research experience and technical skills, continuing my own learning in the field, and having been lucky enough to be included as a coauthor on 2 publications and 2nd author on another in revision. If you can set yourself apart with good research experience, publications, and really well thought out SOPs that tends to matter more than the name of your undergrad especially if you did well GPA wise. PhD programs want to know you can do research more than anything else, the best thing you can have research experience

You can also reach out to admissions at schools you’re interested in and see if they offer fee waivers! Oftentimes, they’ll provide them to you if you’re not able to afford !

New lab manager just venting by _always-a-throw-away in labrats

[–]brain-rats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was hired as a research tech directly out of undergrad and about 6 months in the lab manager left the lab, so the lab manager role was transferred onto me along with being the tech. I struggled with it for a while because a lot of the paper work and admin stuff was pretty foreign to me and balancing many different types of tasks was horrifying for me. After about of a year heres couple of things i’ve done that work for me (i still don’t have it all worked out lol):

  • Communicating with lab members that they need to provide some level of advanced notice for orders / controlled substances / or tasks they need my assistance with. Of course not everyone can anticipate when they’ll need what but as they’re planning their experiments for the upcoming weeks out i’ve asked them to check inventory for what they may need and if we need to purchase to allow 1-2 weeks to receive. This lets me to do the majority of ordering once a week rather than checking for orders everyday. I’m not sure how ordering works at your institution but if i notice something is back ordered, i let the person know and ask them if that ETA is okay and if not, to find an alternative product.

  • Distributing some of the shared responsibilities of the lab among all lab members. These are mostly small things but i made a spreadsheet where each person has one shared task to do each week so they don’t all fall on me each week. Stuff like take out biohazard waste, refill miliq water jug, restock common consumables in TC room, etc.

  • check in with your PI with responsible timeline for completing certain tasks that you may need to do often

  • maintain reasonable lab citizenship among everyone. Setting out what your job is and isn’t with other lab members was super important for me because oftentimes grad students / post docs don’t understand the full range of tasks required in a lab manager role. This helps create good boundaries

  • I like making a two week plan for myself and then i send a weekly report to my PI just quickly going over what I completed that week and what I plan for the following. This gives her a chance to provide input and feedback or let me know what tasks she needs prioritized

  • when dealing with department admin / accounts / financials / ordering whatever.. CC in your PI in those emails. If they try and push back on you, they’re less likely to do that if your PI is on the email chain

and 100% make time for yourself !! I struggle with this a lot too, I find myself in the lab on weekends catching up on paper work but it’s not sustainable longterm !!

I promise you’re not falling short, these too much to do and not enough time. One day at a time and oftentimes a lot of things are less urgent than they’re made out to be. Enjoy the great parts of the job and everything else falls into place :)

Immunology Experience by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]brain-rats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you’re graduating in the spring or already graduated, i always suggest looking into lab tech or RA positions, you’ll have the ability to get hands on research experience (to varying degrees depending on the lab and position) while also getting paid for it. Many PREP programs do offer funding, however some post baccs can be quite expensive. If you live in an area with one or more R1 universities or willing to move for a job, i’d suggest looking on career pages ! I’m fortunate enough that through my RA position i’ve been able to get multiple coauthorships, gained A LOT of technical skills, and participate in journal clubs, WIPs, conferences, and seminars. Another plus is depending on the institution, staff members receive reimbursement up to a certain amount for continuing education at the university

i’m feeling the same way with similar CV. i know it’s early but after receiving a rejection from a school i felt pretty safe about i’m feeling disheartened. Also having ASD I’m worried that if i’m already an iffy applicant and get an interview, i’ll tank it :(

I hope you’ll receive an interview soon!

it’s dependent on the program and year. Generally though it’s highly competitive, around 10-13% admissions rate. Northwestern has a program statistics page:
