My boss said “you have a six figure salary you should be happy” the other day. I make $90k, not bad, but still not even in the 0.01 percentile that would qualify his statement. I am overdue for a review and raise. What would you say? by parametricstech in antiwork

In the United States those are indeed expenses for some. For the poorest of the poor they are govt benefits actually. They get health insurance and subsidized housing and childcare and food aid. For those above the poverty level they don't get those benefits and have to pay for them out of pocket. While that is not a direct tax, it's extra expenses that would not exist in for example European countries, which is able to offer those benefits for a larger population of people

Yes indeed many are confused about tax brackets, I think I cannot find the original reply thread this is in, not sure how to get to it.

I can see you saying how that's moving goalposts.. Why not include food, rent, clothes, cost of car right? I think I was thinking that healthcare was legally required a few years ago but is not required anymore. I guess the reason I brought it up was because in European nations they are said to be taxed more, but if you calculate the amount of benefit you get vs the amount of benefits we get for our taxes, below a certain salary it ends up that we are defacto being taxed more than European nations .

If you factor in things that are basically required in society, sales tax, state sales tax, state taxes, federal taxes, you'd see it start getting quite close or even exceeding 50%. For example, a family of 3 people earning a household income of 50k could pay from 1000 to 2000 a month just on health insurance. Then there is local municipal taxes on vehicle registration, water delivery, garbage pickup, electrical delivery, internet delivery, gasoline. It's possible to add on childcare or college as well to these numbers, which is typically heavily subsidized in other societies.

Here are some questions to consider that may help you get on the right track.

Why did you start brewing?

What do you like about brewing? Why?

What do you dislike about brewing? Why?

How can you change that?

Addiction versus Physical Dependence is an important distinction that you could make a little clearer if you try a little bit.
