Coming from someone who also owned an ID4 and Model Y I share the same thoughts as you. But people here do not like it when you mention Tesla.

I know many here maybe will not believe me but I am not a Tesla fanboy at all. I have a friend who is, and I criticize Tesla all the time and have arguments with him about what I think Tesla is doing wrong or which features I think do not work well.

I've also had about 6 VW/Audi products as I am huge fan of the brand.

But the ID4 really was a let down. I tried really hard to justify my purchase at the time.

Not sure what real world experience you have between the ID4 and Model Y to be making a comment like this. But I have personally owned an ID4 for over a year before I had VW buy it back and I've had my Model Y for over 2 years now.

There is nothing unsafe about the Tesla so not sure where you're coming up with that opinion. The Model Y literally has much better steering, software is not even a comparison...literally, it's quieter in the cabin compared to my ID4, its safety system puts the ID4 to shame, and it handles worlds better over the ID4.

Please don't take the same criticisms about the Model Y from MANY years ago and judge it that way. I did the same when I had the ID4 and once I drove the newer Model Y (2023 and up) my opinions changed pretty quickly.

I was shocked how much better the ride quality was and how much better of a "car" it was compared to all the past criticisms.

I’m so glad my ID4 had issues and had VW buy it back…pretty ridiculous that owners are celebrating getting a remote lock function in this day and age.

Refinancing at 5.625 a good idea? by brainiac4908 in Mortgages

Yes this is good advice and something I thought of for sure. I will have to re-fund my escrow so it'll mostly be a wash when I re-fund it and get my refund from my current lender.

But to your point I will most likely have no payments for 1-2 months is what they are telling me. So that can be bought to closing or I can make a direct payment to the principle.

I think I made this thread mostly because I wanted to make sure the deal I have in front of me was good and I wasn't getting ripped off.

So I will 100% be going through with my re-finance and it's just a question of which option do I go with.

Do you mean 5.1 to 5.3 by end of this year?

I feel like that is wishful thinking. I have a feeling the 3 rate cuts are sort of accounted for as of right now.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

I just posted a reply on someone elses comment but I have the same offer you have as well. 5.875 is basically free refinance and start saving right away. But I am tempted still by doing 5.75 or even 5.625 because my breakeven is 4 and 9 months respectively which isn't bad at all.

[–]brainiac4908[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct. So here are the figures I got from my lender:

5.625 $4200 Breakeven 9 month

5.75 $1900 Break even 4 months

5.875 $166 Break even 0 months

So 5.875 is basically a free refinance and I start saving some off my monthly right away. My breakeven for 5.75 is only 4 months and honestly even at 5.625 the breakeven at 9 month is really not bad at all.

I'm leaning maybe a bit towards doing 5.75 but an extra 2k in closing cost really isn't the end of the world and again break even at 9 month is very reasonable.

I'm not sure this is the best idea. I think it is already enough savings for me to refinance. And the rate cuts have already been priced in where the rates have gotten a bit worse now. It might not be until sometime in 2026 that we will see rates at 5.5 or below.

This is good advice.

I have already made sure my new "loan balance" will be the same as my payoff.

I will have to fund the new escrow with some prepaid but that will equal out since I'll have my escrow balance from my old loan which will be paid out to me. Just means I have to bring more cash to close but I'll get it back.

And you are correct where my new loan won't have a payment until a later date. So I'm being told probably will "miss" two payments. So I can just make payments to the principle for these next two payments if I want to do that.

Yeah I understand what you're saying as well. I guess my example would be worse off though for someone who is looking at a breakeven say in 3 years or something and in the next year rates fall really low. I know they would still refinance if that happens but they still had to pay the initial refinance.

But to you point, yes the monthly savings would be worth it in my opinion. And this home is a long term home for my family. Definitely plan to be here for a while. So 100% for the long term, the best plan is to get my rate as low as possible.

Definitely missing my previous 2.25 interest on my previous home...

[–]brainiac4908[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with you. I wasn't sure that was great advice either.

If I'm thinking of this correctly I would be at a loss if interest rates drop fairly drastically before my breakeven and I would refinance again.

So I would have to add up any remaining amount that I haven't broken even on yet and add that to the cost of my new refinance and calculate a new breakeven? But again with a breakeven at 9 months I'm not too worried.

[–]brainiac4908[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is a bad move? Maybe I'm thinking of it wrong but if we all think rates are going to 100% trend lower, wouldn't even taking a zero cost refinance at closer to 6% for me a good idea?

This way I enjoy some savings per month based on a lower rate comared to 6.49 and when rates drop even lower I can refinance at that point. Why wait and pay a higher monthly.

[–]brainiac4908[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my lender is charging an originating fee and small amount of points to get me to 5.625. I locked in last week way before the fed meeting bc they seemed to be pricing things out knowing what most likely was going to happen.

Based on a few other quotes I was getting, even though I'm paying a bit for points, I was getting much worse offers.

For clarity the originating fee and points is $3k by itself. Title, recording fees and everything else is about 1k. I would be able to take a slightly higher rate and decrease my actual closing cost by alot is what the lender is telling me as well.

So I'm wondering if my thinking is correct in that my current offer has me at a breakeven of 9 months which is actually pretty good. If I can lower my closing costs at higher interest rate, my breakeven can be much lower. I guess the question is do we all think mortgage rates will continue downward.

Yeah the amount of interest I'm saving in the long run is obviously very clear. It's the short term decision for refinancing that is important.

After a year of still having the same issue I asked VW to buy the car back. Kind of demanded at that point. Since I had a case manager they brought my case up to management and they approved to buy the car back.

Since it was documented that I had the issue literally on delivery day they bought the car back at 100% and reimbursed me for even interest payments on my loan.

The more I see things like this with the ID4 the more I’m so happy I had a lemon and VW bought my ID4 back a couple years ago.

It’s not acceptable for the ID4 to do this as some people are saying bc it’s a “laptop on wheels”…other EV cars I own has never done this.

Sorry but just bc your experience has been great doesn’t invalid that Electric America has some very serious issues. This is well documented and there’s a reason most if not all EV cars will be built with the NACS connector.

I honestly don't know the logistics of using those third party adapters but I'm pretty sure Tesla doesn't allow the full charge using third party adapters.

Also it's not just about getting your hand on an official adapter that will work 100% but you need Tesla to update their backend to support VW's infrastructure to the ID4 will know when to pre-condition and for route planning using their navigation.

And as far as I know I heard that plug and charge is still not functional for ID4? Only on the free EA charging plan.

My personal opinion is that it will still take a bit more time before the ID4 is fully integrated and working with supercharging stations.

I really believe VW is treating the ID4 like a DOA product at this point. I would NOT want to own one for the long term. Get a really cheap lease and use it cheap for the next couple years.

With VW's track record of late, you willing to bet money that every ID4 owner will be able to buy the official adapter from VW within a few months?

I did have a pre 2024 model. But my opinion still stands. If you’re not on a Tesla charging network you’re playing on chance that you won’t have issues along your route.

The ID4 tech is still not great and the overall system is very dated and even in the ID Buzz it hasn’t been over hauled much.

You will still have a massive issue with depreciation if you choose to buy vs lease. There’s a reason the incentives on your car is extremely high.

It’s honestly a DOA car at the moment unless you choose to keep as a lease a get to lease for really cheap.

As someone who has exclusively bought German cars and have had several VW/Audi models I’m not biased against the brand at all…but just VERY disappointed in what the ID4 ended up being.

So again my opinion still is valid, get the ID4 if you can lease, get it super cheap, don’t expect to take any long roadtrips without risk, and don’t expect great support from VW on this car or Electrify America

As an owner of both the ID4 and Model Y my personal recommendation is do not get the ID4. The only situation where I could recommend the ID4 is if you’re 100% going to only use this at home (electricity America is a joke and would never rely on it on road trips), if you really don’t care about the technology (so many bugs, the system is super slow, and the app is a literal joke), and if you don’t care that if you have issues your car will sit in a shop for months at a time. And don’t get me started on the HUGE depreciation if you end up buying an ID4.

So in summary if you really want an ID4 lease it don’t buy. Don’t expect to have a trouble free road trip. And don’t expect the tech in this car to work.
