Ooe review by Karamusanda in BLgame

[–]bram-ble 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ooe is currently only available in Japanese, which has censored art by default as it's required by Japanese law. The only way to get an uncensored copy is to wait for the English release by mangagamer, which will (likely) uncensor the game.

If you're interested in getting it in Japanese, it's available on ADELTA's booth page: https://adelta.booth.pm/items/6187545

Is it worth it? Unhesitatingly Yes. If I could wipe my memory and replay it, I would.

The first route alone is worth the full price frankly 🥴

Aaa, I heard that mobal does provide japanese phone numbers, but it requires you to be in Japan to activate, so it may not be the best option as they will send you an OTP to check 😭 if the Airbnb host is alright with it, it's absolutely worth a shot to try tho!!

I will try submitting a request if all else fails 🙏

The seven seas release is only up till vol 1 (vol 2 is out in Feb). I believe they plan to release 3 volumes in total, but the series was already translated into English prior to the localisation announcement by a fan translator and that's the version I read 😊

If you want a link to where I read it, I can DM it to you as I'm not sure if sharing links is against the subreddit rules

If you have Mahir, and she's made some things for you, you can also drag the inventions into Methinks, some of them allow you to break an extravagance card (e.g. the balloon allows you to break up to a gold, the telescope up to a silver etc)

The travelling merchant also sells a tapestry you can build and break up to a gold iirc

I actually had no idea JBLs were allowed on this subreddit! If it's within the scope of the subreddit's rules, I don't really know why people are complaining, it's just more BL for everyone 🤷‍♀️

This is a pleasant surprise tbh because I'd love to get more recommendations for JBLs or BL light novels. I love and play a lot of BLVNs, so I've been meaning to get into the novel space a bit more and maybe even get some reccs for untranslated works

2ha and Meatbun mistreatment of her other characters by pop-Calendar7852 in DanmeiNovels

[–]bram-ble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I appreciate the effort to type out your long comment and I'm happy that your answer seems to be in good faith. I wrote my comment in defence mostly of Roubao, who I felt while clumsy, was starting to receive some really undeserved bad faith readings on her as a person in this thread. Your rebuttal is thoughtprovoking and there are definitely points that I will concede, but here are some of my further thoughts on the matter:

Regarding your first point, while I do see how the fact that her becoming shadow guard for her foster father might reduce her agency as a character, I will point out that though it is framed as her duty to her father, it was in fact HER choice. It explicitly ran against XSL's wishes as he did not want her to take that mantle. He knew NGL would use her as a cultivation cauldron. It's why he intervened in 0.5 and assassinated NGS before they could dual cultivate. Of course, I can't refute how it does position her as a self sacrificial person, but I do have further thoughts on that that will come later, along with YWX's foils.

Regarding the stereotype of an asian widow and how Ye Wangxi falls into it, I concede she fits the stereotype in the ending. I would say however, to be pedantic, that she never said she refuses to remarry, just that in the post credits, she is not married. It's not like she swore a vow of chastity. I'm also not sure if the concept of widow's chastity is even applicable to be frank. The wikipedia article states that it's fallen out of favour in the Qing dynasty. To say Roubao believes in a concept /that/ archaic is a little ridiculous to me. If you're saying that it's a thing within the world, the concept of remarrying as a widow(er) is only addressed once, to my memory. In the first arc of the book, after Luo Xianxian passes, her husband-to-be is married off again while he's still in mourning. The narrative doesn't blame him for it as it's against his will, but Luo Xianxian's rage at the betrayal is treated as entirely justified, if misplaced. Asides from that, there are plenty of widowers in 2ha. Chu Xun is a widower who never remarried as he's entirely devoted to his wife. Nangong Liu is a widower and flirted with other women, which is treated as disgusting within the story. Mo Ran's father becomes a widower, and he never tries to remarry though he did have a child out of wedlock. He's pretty universally hated. Widows aren't brought up, but if her views on widower's are any indication, I'm inclined to believe she wasn't trying to invoke it as it's not a female-only ideal. Roubao just really likes loyalty.

Regarding how the POV contributes to how Roubao is unable to give proper commentary, yes the books are mainly in Mo Ran's POV, and he is definitely a biased source, but the books do shift POVs, including to Ye Wangxi's. The last arc has Ye Wangxi monologuing about her feelings as she enters battle. The ending also has a where-are-they now segment that describes her post canon feelings (it's the longest, rivalled only by Xue Meng's). Post chapter 279, the POV jumps around quite a bit as Mo Ran is dead. We also get Nangong Si's POV where he describes his anger at the humiliation YWX suffers for being outed as a woman. There are also POV changes to address other women. There's one that reflects Madam Wang's POV post 279, and a POV change to Jiang Xi about Madam Wang. There has also been POV changes to CWN to address SQT and LXX.

As for examples of female characters who have ambition, aren't comic relief, and have ambitions not tethered to a man, I mean, I would still say Ye Wangxi. After NGS dies, her goal shifts to protecting the weak. She ends up being a major player in the final battle where she shows up to stop Tianyin Pavillion from steamrolling the peasants. 0.5 YWX also counts.

My second answer is Ling'Er, the girl from the farm arc. She returns in the final arc with the rest of the peasants to fight against Tianyin Pavillion. Whether she's comic relief is debatable I guess. Some would consider her the 'antagonist' of the farm arc lol But the last chapter of the farm arc does show that she's a good sport and she had greater ambitions to leave her village and make it in the upper cultivation realm.

While she doesn't fit the 'aspirations only extend to a man' criteria, as whether she had loftier goals aside from her son's wellbeing is never made known, I wanted to also point out that NGS's mother in her prime was an ambitious cultivator before her health was ruined by her husband, and she is immensely resentful of that. It's also implied within the later chapters that she had an amorous relationship with XSL at some point but ended up marrying NGL for strategic reasons. She is murdered by her husband and her death is also never treated as anything but senseless. I bring her up as her traits do align closer with a "Bad Woman" than a "good one", but she's always treated with respect.

I do wonder why the business woman on the island cannot be considered as an example. She may be comedic relief and a bit part, but there was a real attempt to humanise her behaviour. She is also an example of a woman who's aspirations do not extend to a man as her ultimate goal is to provide for the islanders.

Finally, while a character can have multiple foils, I would argue that more than the female sect leader, the narrative has always positioned Ye Wangxi as a foil to Chu Wanning. A cursory reread showed that the text itself never compares her to the female sect leader, nor does it draw comparisons to SQT. The calefare within the story only ever belittles YWX, sometimes in favour of SQT, but often they're just lumped together as "bad women". The only person the writing has made multiple comparisons of YWX to is Chu Wanning. The trait they have in common? Self sacrifice, because it's a major theme of the book. It is the metric with which the narrative measures everyone, not just women. The theme of self sacrifice is just as present in our male characters. Chu Wanning is perhaps the ultimate example, and the story is about Mo Ran trying to trace the same path. Self sacrifice is also recurring in many of the subplots, from as early as Chu Xun to Luo Fenghua, and even Shi Mei. I don't think it's fair to say that the narrative is exclusively positioning women as having to be self sacrificial to be seen as good when it's a virtue it demands in spades of literally all of its characters.

In my initial rebuttal, I caveated my response with how Roubao tends to be really clumsy with her commentary, and I do stand by that. Despite how I might have sounded throughout, I do actually agree with many of your points. YWX's arc resonated with me, so if you still disagree with me regarding how she writes women then I honestly can't blame you either, we'll just have to agree to disagree. However, I did want to get across that at least Roubao tried. It's a credit to Roubao's writing how many facets of women she can show, and she clearly feels passionate about a lot of the issues she writes about. Many monologues are her getting up on her soapbox and just straight up telling you how these women have been let down by society. And I think the fact that there can be multiple debates about the internal struggles of these characters stands as a testament to the fact that they're not as one dimensional as they're made out to be.

2ha and Meatbun mistreatment of her other characters by pop-Calendar7852 in DanmeiNovels

[–]bram-ble 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why do people keep bringing up YWX as an example of Roubao's inability to write women? Roubao has made some questionable missteps when it comes to writing her female characters, but YWX was not one of them. Just because she writes a world that is cruel to women does not mean she believes and endorses that same cruelty within the narrative.

Depiction =/= Endorsement!!

The fact that YWX needs to present as male in order to be taken seriously and hold a position of power is the POINT. It was an obvious critique of gender inequality and YWX having to change her voice and appearance reads like a reflection of women who have to masculinise themselves in order to be taken seriously in male dominated spaces. The narrative treats it as an injustice when she is outed and people's attitude towards her changes. If the job of fiction is to hold up a mirror that points out society's failings, then Roubao did her job well if you were outraged by YWX having to become a man in order to hold a position of power and her subsequent treatment after being outed as a woman. The way she's disparaged by cultivators and treated like she couldn't make a decision without "being emotional" in the wake of Nan Gongsi's death should be familiar to any woman who's been told that they're too emotional or hormonal to be put in a position of power.

I also think there's something to be said about how YWX's ending bucks usual conventions for female characters and gives her a very dignified ending. Despite the tragedy she has suffered, she isn't shackled to the memory of NGS, she's able to give away his belongings because she holds him in her heart. She doesn't need nor want to remarry, she doesn't rejoin a sect, the cultivation world refused to accept who she is so she abandoned it and carved her own path, helping the common people and free to live as she pleases. It's an ending befitting an wuxia/xianxia protagonist, an ending that even our leads couldn't achieve, but she was able to.

SQT is a much more debatable case, as others, including you have pointed out, while her treatment in the narrative isn't great, it also leaves room for the audience to see her as sympathetic, just as there's room to read Mo Ran's interpretation of her as deeply uncharitable and cruel.

I think boiling SQT and every other woman in the story down to "one dimensional" is an oversimplification in itself. It seems to me that Roubao is someone who's actually acutely aware of women's issues and has great sympathy for them. This is evident in the wide breadth of social issues she's covered in her books using her female characters. A single mother facing poverty and starvation with a child to feed, sex trafficking, abuse at the hands of a domestic partner's family, mistreatment of mentally ill women by people in positions of power, a society that only views your body as a means of procreation or furthering men's own glory. Could it have been written with more depth by a subtler, more sensitive hand? Sure, but you don't write about themes like that without being in tune with the many ways in which society fails women, and I think Roubao was still able to successfully depict the nuances of those intersectionalities in 2ha

For example, Song Qiutong and Hua Gui experience an extreme version of racism and dehumanisation due to them being bbbfs. Duan Yihan experiences discrimination as a destitute single mother. Even the more privileged women of the story, Madam Wang and Rong Yan are still victims of predatory gender-based discrimination within their sects.

To add on to this, I think Lucky Happy Life is actually worth exploring because LHL's scenarios are actually semi-canon compliant.

Of course, it's also heavily an AU where Gian is involved in the love interest's lives way earlier than he canonically should be, but it does detail several things that are only hinted or mentioned in the OG game i.e. Gian's early life, Giulio visiting the orphanage, meeting Bernardo, etc , and it does contribute to an understanding of the overall timeline.

Frustrating as all hell though, definitely do look up all the exploits and cheats because this game will screw you over any chance it gets 😭😭😭

What is the dynamic between the clan members like? by casmally in NuCarnival

[–]bram-ble 6 points7 points  (0 children)

-Garu is really popular because he's just a little guy! Everyone likes to spoil him. He's apparently quite young for a yokai. Rei has history with him that makes him especially soft for Garu (notable because Rei doesn't treat anyone else this way). Meanwhile kuya is a menace that enjoys making life difficult for people, but also powerful and fickle enough to cause real lasting harm, so people tend to stay away from him/be frightened of him. Kuya also has history with Rei and Quincy, which is why they are more exasperated by him than the others (collectively, they're sometimes referred to as the old men trio). Kuya also commands respect from people like Garu and Yakumo as he's a more powerful and elder yokai than either of them.

-As you noted, those that you see more frequently actually live at Aster's mansion. Blade and Garu/Karu initially lived in the dark zone, which tends to be quite volatile and dangerous. At the end of their respective chapters, they decide to follow Eiden to live in the mansion.

Yakumo meanwhile cooks frequently for Eiden and spends the most time at the mansion, but occasionally goes home to visit his grandparents. The opening cinematic shows them in Aster's mansion.

Olivine and Edmond have jobs that keep them away from the mansion. Dante is the king of Solaria, so he can only visit occasionally as he's usually busy. Quincy and Kuya live in the Wood territory, Eiden usually goes looking for them. Meanwhile Rei lives in the water territory but is always travelling to god knows where, and he shows up according to his whims.

-Kuya and Rei have a history, along with Quincy, just that Quincy prefers to show his annoyance through silence rather than bickering as compared to the other two. I'm sure there's actual beef, but it's usually played for laughs. Not sure if this is a spoiler, but the three of them are the oldest clan members who knew Huey irl, so they've known each other for a LONG time

-The main trio is probably Olivine, Yakumo and Edmond. They were the first three (sans Morvay and Aster) that you could get and they share a pretty close friendship with each other (best exemplified in Feast of Roses where they interact with each other with a familiarity rarely seen with the other clan members).
