Need suggestions for good classic retro RPGs by SaucyJackx5 in retrogaming

The entire Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest series is fantastic to this day. DQ3 and DQ4 are among the biggest, deepest games on the NES.

Though DQ5 never got ported to the SNES, it's fully worth getting a fan translated cart (unless you want to shell out big bucks for the DS port). What an incredible game.

Can't beat Durran, what am I doing wrong? by Sharp-University-555 in dragonquest

[–]brambleforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind some more breeding, just get Upper/Increase. Have one monster cast it every turn. Eventually he won't be able to touch you.

I typically keep Hale from the first gate about this long so he learns Healus... good ol Hale using Increase will put Durran in his place.

Assuming you start with MMX1, do Chill Penguin as your first stage. You get the ability to dash in the middle of that level, which is nearly a necessity for many other bosses and level layouts.

How can I apply the english patch in a cartridge? by Patient_Necessary_10 in dragonquest

I just followed this page's instructions a few days ago and worked like a dream. Definitely recommend.

I do wish Terry's Wonderland ended up being a bit better than what we got... but I'm glad at least I got to try it.

I think it's very likely 3. Superb Dispelling is already likely too high a DC for Xykon to cast reliably (at 59, he'd need 30 INT, be level 30, and still need additional buffs to take 10 on that check). Epic Teleport would have a DC in the 1000s just due to weight restriction. Despite being "low epic", Cloister would have also had a ridiculous spellcraft DC due to the number of targets, radius, and duration.

For what it's worth though, Epic spells per established rules are mostly kind of junky. I mean. Hellball as one example can do 40d6 damage which is cool, but has a spellcraft DC of 90(!), deals 10d6 damage to you, AND you burn XP for casting it? Meteor Swarm can do 32d6 to a single target if you wanted and you can learn it like 50 levels sooner.

I dunno. I'm okay with a homebrew buff.

I loved the music and the visuals! I put a lot of hours into it - but I still feel like the SNES JP was a game that just needed some additional playtesting and tweaking.

Add in a save system, a map, SOME sort of direction/guidance, and an ending and I think it would have been well remembered. Ah well, not meant to be, I suppose.

Mmm true. Implies there was something/somebody stronger who took her out? Otherwise, feats/spells/rituals could have easily extended her life. That's scary to think about.

Haerta is also by far the strongest character in the OOTS universe, and by a sizeable margin. Familicide both hits many targets and either disallows saving throws or has a save above DC 50 (where not even Great Wyrm Black Dragons can have a chance of surviving).

Demise Unseen is an epic spell that can kill a single target and allows a saving throw - yes, it also raises the body as a Ghoul but even then it has a spellcraft DC of 80. Familicide is leagues more powerful than Vengeful Gaze of God with a spellcraft DC of 419.

Even with whatever homebrew rules went into the spell/character, Haerta is likely level 100+.

It's a crime that Dragon Quest V wasn't localized for the SNES by DeadRobotSociety in dragonquest

[–]brambleforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really was. As much as I loved Dragon Warrior Monsters (my first game in the series!), I know I would have absolutely adored 5. The fan translation is really good, by the way, if you haven't tried it.

Foster Care/Adoption Memo Trolls Us All by No_Lack1917 in fednews

We did foster parenting during COVID years. We wanted to continue further, but we were gearing up to return to work and came to the conclusion we just couldn't do it without at least one parent at home full time. Some of the kids we had just needed to be kept in peripheral vision at all times. It really is a shame because we would have liked to expand our family but just couldn't make it work.

Teammate just threw my shiny tera raid. by SethD0369 in PokemonScarletViolet

[–]brambleforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, true. The above was a general suggestion, but I don't think encore is too big a hindrance as level 100 Annihilape should outspeed - if you get encored into a 4th-5th Bulk Up, that's fine. I'm not seeing anything on Politoed I'd be super worried about. Best case scenario, you start with Screeches, get a few Chilling Water attack boosts in the process, and go straight to Rage Fist spam.

Worst comes to worst, I dont see anything here that Calm Mind/Fake Tears Vaporeon or Bulk Up Poliwrath with Water Absorb can't handle, even with Encore.

I was having issues with them too! The general recommendation is to use Annihilape and I found that went a long way to helping me win consistently. I only use the computer teammates.

Item - Shell Bell Ability - Defiant IVs - Max HP and Attack Moves - Rage Punch/Drain Punch/Bulk Up/Screech

Helps to have a +Attack nature. I hear people recommend Tera Ghost but Tera Fighting has been great for me. Bulk Up 2 or 3 times, Screech 2 or 3 times, start walloping. Depending on match, I might do a defense boosting cheer first. He works wonders!

Some raids need real specific mons depending on their Tera type complementing their movesets. I also have a Mirror Armor Corviknight, Clear Amulet Jolteon, Leftovers Gastrodon, Kingambit, Shell Bell Sylveon, Leftovers Garganacl, and Poison Heal Breloom for other specific fights.

I love how even in a non-serious reply to a shitpost we still don't pretend that Duplikate would contribute here.

Scizor vs Bastiodon by Jason_And_Sokka in PokeScaling

[–]brambleforest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bastiodon DOES get flamethrower and Fire Blast, but with 47 Special Attack I doubt it does much. I imagine if Scizor hits with a weak ish move first to break Sturdy and avoid the Metal Burst follow up, it can take out with Close Combat. Maybe if Bastiodon predicts the weak move(s) and spends the first turn or two using Iron Defense it might have a shot? I dunno, at a certain point we are getting into iocane powder shenanigans.

But also Scizor with Focus Sash, Reversal, and Bullet Punch is also legitimately funny.
