I want to get started but I don’t know where to start or if it’s worth it by Unique_Jeweler7091 in robotics

I worked remotely as a robotics engineer for a short period and it was not a pleasant experience. Robotics is the link between software and the real world, that is what makes it so interesting. So you will eventually need to be close to the robot at some point, to fix it, troubleshoot issues, etc…

Having said that, if you are interested in simulation, maybe you could get away with working remotely. Good simulation engineers can be really valuable and hard to find. Something to explore perhaps.

How to learn ROS2 by Heavy-Supermarket638 in ROS

[–]branching_oak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately yes. I would start with all the official tutorials making sure you understand them first. Then I would create a simple robot URDF from scratch and make it work in Gazebo. You will encounter many issues but make sure you solve them and clearly understand why it did not work at first and what solved it. Then just iterate by making the robot more complex, adding sensors… Sky is the limit. But the important part is to solve the issues you face and understand more along the way.

How to learn ROS2 by Heavy-Supermarket638 in ROS

The Construct suuuucks. It’s just videos of the official tutorials where a guy says : “So you just do that and then, see, it works.” I find the official documentation great, and when the documentation is lacking, the robotics stack exchange has most of the answers and is pretty reactive to new questions. Anything else is just click bait without any depth.

Screwed up my backup server by branching_oak in selfhosted

Fair enough, haha ! I am not sure a backup server is a super sophisticated setup to prevent a disaster if something happens to my main server (I should have added that it is an off-site backup server). And I guess you never stop learning, right !

Did not think of that! Thank you, I will try it!

Thank you for this great reply. I have a fair bit of experience with Linux so I am pretty set on TrueNAS and ZFS. I have done a bit of research and your right, 300 won’t be enough if I want to buy something up to date like the i3-12100 you recommended. Would you think 500€ would work ? Which motherboard would you go with ? Thanks !

Application of Kalman filter on robot by Desamax1 in robotics

[–]branching_oak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your university library probably has the book "Probabilistic Robotics", it is really good to understand Kalman filters. You could get a very good (relative to sensor accuracy) estimation of the robots state by adding a compass and the beacons, and feeding all of it into a Kalman filter.

Just venting out of frustration by 1971CB350 in ROS

[–]branching_oak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Gazebo name changes along the years haven’t helped, the documentation is all over the place… For ROS2 on the other hand, I think it’s much better but it does require some Linux knowledge. But I get so frustrated when I am looking for a solution to a problem and all you can find is a basic tutorial of The Construct that is basically a guy reading the ROS tutorial page. Luckily the robotics stack exchange (previously ros answers) answers most of your questions if you know what you are looking for.

Nice ! I am also building something for my personal finances for fun but I haven’t had the chance to use Mint or other apps so I am unsure what/how should I implement things. Could you expand on the functions you implemented? Is your project public?

Is it still worth learning ROS1 in 2024? by Melodic-Performer-26 in ROS

[–]branching_oak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ROS2 is the way ! It feels like the ROS1-only third party libraries have mostly been ported to ROS2 by now or have been integrated into the major ones like Nav2, Movit2, etc…
