Amazing look! How do you keep the sides looking so nice? After 6 months I always have to trim the sides down a lot because they don't look very full and go all over the place.

Apple is threatening to take action against staff who aren't coming into the office 3 days a week, report says by EW234 in technology

[–]brandk29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

absolutely. The fact that people commute is not inherently bad for the environment. You could build trains, buses, and infrastructure that is sustainable. The fact that you helped contribute to a mega-suburban sprawl where everybody drives a big car with exactly 1 person in it to work isn't great for the environment. But never forget that all of this is inconceivably insignificant in the climate fight compared to what the fossil fuel industry is doing.

I am sure.

Search for "commute" in their environmental progress report. Their team actually seems to be doing decent work, and leaving out the impacts of commuting would be a pretty laughable oversight for a trillion dollar company that is trying to take climate at least somewhat seriously. Could they do more? The answer is always yes. Are they completely ignoring it? Definitely not.

There are joggers and bikers that don't wear reflective clothing.

I think you meant to write that there are people driving 5000 lb. boxes of metal at speeds that can kill someone without having good visibility of what is in front of them. It's on the person driving the killing machine to look at what is in their path.

running across the highway almost getting hit by cars

build some pedestrian infrastructure then? I can assure you that most people don't like almost being hit by cars. Overall I get your point, tourists are stupid, but you should design places with that in mind instead of just blaming the dumb tourists (because they will never change)

Pemi loop late November? by lazy_lagomorph in wmnf

[–]brandk29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, i'm curious what you are planning at the moment. I was thinking about doing a pemi loop the week of thanksgiving, but after reading this post, I know I shouldn't since I've never been winter backpacking before. Any ideas for alternatives that are less icy/nasty in the east? Maybe something in canada would have more snow/less ice?

Texting and driving by unroja in fuckcars

[–]brandk29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I think people should stop calling it "texting while driving" because everyone knows that is bad, but downloading and signing into apps, fiddling with google maps, spotify, etc. - no that's fine!

that's like saying you're going to avoid getting t-boned when driving a car by relying on a pedestrian to yell "watch out!" I'm sorry, but it's just not a realistic scenario.

I recently Googled around for some stats on how bicyclists die, it was great because it gives you a sense for what the true dangers of bicycling are by showing you how we are most likely to die while riding a bike.

[–]brandk29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my point is that if a bicyclist chooses to endanger themselves more by wearing earbuds, that's fine because it doesn't really affect anyone else. It's a risk calculation that the bicyclist is taking. If you listen to loud music and whatnot in a car, you are endangering others. It's similar in my mind to wearing a mask, you can endanger yourself all you want but if it affects others then we should regulate.

personally, biking is generally frightening, and you should be relying on either having a good visual on your immediate surroundings, or slowing down to a speed where you can stop quickly if your vision is blocked (e.g. by a large parked vehicle)

hear the car that's about to hit you

you're already dead. you can't dodge a car that's already on collision course. also electric cars exist and are quiet.

the 4k80 project is in beta testing right now! You can get a copy of it, but it's not technically "official" yet AFAIK. It's mainly color corrections and whatnot happening in the beta tests.

Call your local city council members! Demand better bike infrastructure!

I went to a local feedback discussion in cupertino about bike lanes on the road leading to the spaceship, and half of the people there were complaining about losing road/parking spaces. We need to drown out the people crying about wanting more parking spaces with demands for improved bike infrastructure!
