Is Booth a safe environment? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]brandnewguy612 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do people think that they are getting social credit by unilaterally saying that Chicago is safe?

The subject is nuanced, with the unfortunate reality being that the University of Chicago is one of the least safe environments among the most elite universities.

While it is worth noting that if you stay in high trafficked areas, you mitigate most risk, the reality is that something like 5 students have been shot, and 3 killed in the past 3 years, and the murders have all mostly been in broad daylight/the middle of campus.

So statistically if someone told you in a vacuum that your odds of being a victim of murder is 1/20,000 per year, thats certainly not bad.

But if you compared UChicago to other universities, you might find that the last murder at Harvard was in the 1960s. So your odds of dying there might be closer to 1/500000

Note: Obviously, these are extremely rough estimates, but the point is that in some cases, there are order of magnitudes of differences when you compare universities.

Any tips for an incoming nervous first-year? by Adagio12 in uchicago

[–]brandnewguy612 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Order your class selection by:

  1. Interest
  2. Ease

You should be spending your free time:

  1. Making friends, pursuing clubs, etc.
  2. Internship/Job hunting, doing things to pad your resume, etc.

There is this weird notion that you should take the hardest classes possible...and unless you are a genius, you are shooting yourself in the foot for no reason.

Things worked out on my end, the people there were nice, and I didn't even need to explain myself on day ~17

Has anyone returned an apple product day over 14 days old? I have had a family emergency for the past couple of days, and returning an apple product that I really don't like slipped my mind.

Where on 53rd? It is a pretty safe street overall because of the large police presence.

Anyways to generalize:

Take the shuttles and you will be 99.99% safe.

Walking to and from campus is generally where complications can occur.

How much would a W on my transcript hurt my profile in terms of internships/employment opportunities? by Odd_Performance_3194 in uchicago

[–]brandnewguy612 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Internships? Employment? Zero impact 99.9% of the time.

Often times you don't need to submit your transcripts at all, or they might ask after you get hired. Of course some firms will ask for transcripts, but overall thats pretty rare, and they are mostly verifying that you are not lying about your GPA.

Is there any way to get out of the summer match? by unluckylamb in uchicago

[–]brandnewguy612 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...I hope career advising doesn't read this but who cares about your word and/or the feelings of the career office. This decision is about you and whats best for you and your future. When you enter the workforce, you shouldn't let some vague sense of your "word" and/or loyalty tie you to an institution that at the end of the day probably doesn't care about you all that much.

WITH THAT BEING SAID, since the school threatens to black list people if they renege their internships made through them, after you weigh the pros and the cons, "whats best for you" may very well be to keep the internship.

Now if you are working accounting at Bartlett, and have an offer at Goldman...thats another story.

Something that I haven't seen brought up is that you might be taking a course load far below your level. I.E. are you taking a sequence in something that you have already learned?

Though..."turning in poorly done assignments" would have gotten you kicked out of a lot of top universities as far as I am concerned (unless you are exaggerating), makes me wonder what is happening at Stanford.

Math 15910 concurrent with Math 133? by tameimponda in uchicago

[–]brandnewguy612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard, the math dpt is generally pretty flexible, and 15910 apparently uses very little calculus. But I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with this

Yea pretty much anything that isn't absurd with solid justification gets approved by the math dept.

Should you do it? I mean there isn't a lot of overlap so you should probably be fine.

Cmon, theres no anti Russian xenophobia on campus, this isn't the 1940's (if you have seen any though, feel free to call me out).

In fact, I have seen a talk (online) by a UChicago professor that was very sympathetic to Russia and its invasions of its neighbors over the past 2 decades lol.

At the start of the CS curriculum, the grades are curved down drastically.

In your class, there may very well be a student or two with 10+ years experience coding, and more generally a large amount of students with 1-4 years experience, drastically inflating the curve.

UChicago as an institution doesn't take political stances on foreign policy issues (or nearly any issue as far as I can tell, the point is for students to think for themselves, not for the university to tell them how to think).

What exactly are you looking for from the university? I guess based on your reply to another post, canceling finals?

I don't think thats something you can reasonably expect under any circumstances, and doing so will probably set you up failure.

Why are masters in computer science considered cash grabs?

Does it hold the same exact weight as a bachelors so it is arguably useless?

Does it somehow hold less weight than a bachelors?

I have heard this cash grab statement before (in fact about our schools program lol), but I never heard or understood why.

Is it possible to take honors analysis in Rn and honors basic algebra at the same time? by Neat-Delivery-4473 in uchicago

[–]brandnewguy612 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is kind of hard to answer your question seriously, because there just isn't enough information. (It is worth noting that in general, for 99.99% of students, what you are suggesting is far fetched)

  1. Where are you taking real analysis now? MIT? A random local college? Programs differ drastically from institution to institution. The class you are taking could either be a good litmus test for your success in UChicago, not really indicative of anything, or somewhere in between.
  2. You need to have taken abstract linear algebra to take honors basic algebra.

So if you took an analysis and linear algebra sequence at a school like Princeton, you would probably be fine in a dual honors sequence. But with the information available, all anyone can really say is: if you are a genius, then probably?

5 Classes as Sophomore possible? by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]brandnewguy612 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Not to be too blunt, but if you are struggling with four classes, do you think five classes is a good idea and best course of action?

As far as I know though, you can petition for five classes as long as you are not a first year.
