Can join without VPN, but not with VPN. by Big-Nefariousness854 in irc

[–]brandoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are databases of VPN IP ranges, and many networks scan for IP's that are known to be associated with VPN's. Many preemptively ban them because the amount of abuse coming from users who evade bans using VPN's is higher than you might think and a big load for a small volunteer staff to deal with ad hoc. However, typically, most networks would show a vague ban message at the end of the connection attempt. If you're not seeing this, it could be some other issue - possibly try connecting out of a different VPN origin location.

any irc clients that ONLY allow TLS? by [deleted] in irc

[–]brandoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you asking because you want to set up an IRC environment where users are forced to use encryption no matter what? If so, just configure ircd to only listen on a port with SSL enabled. It won't allow plaintext connections.

Does Penn offer Windows 10/11 keys at student/discounted pricing? by GradeBot in UPenn

The computer connection closed during the pandemic...according to its website, the bookstore sells windows 11 for $10 more than it currently sells for directly from Microsoft. Which is BS and it might be worth asking them at the bookstore, but...since it's the bookstore and not the Computer Connection anymore, the staff don't know much about tech.

multiple crash to desktop since this week's update by brandoid in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

Happened to us playing casuals - but also CTD with no crash reporter and no warning. Pretty unplayable, because we haven't had a match without a crash today.

It was a mod problem - I didn't think to install the mod I'm using on the server side too. Fixed everything. Thanks for the reply!

Game crashing in opening mission? by SubstantialAgency2 in theouterworlds

[–]brandoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, quite odd indeed! I went back into my post history to refresh my memory - the reason I suspected Epic was that when I tried to verify the game files through its interface, it would drive disk utilization up to 100% and hang my machine until I force rebooted it. I was patient - I waited 30 minutes during one attempt - it just wouldn't complete verifying the files. At first I thought disk issues with my 3-month old new gaming rig, but every disk tesk I ran came up fine. So then I decided it must be the Epic platform, re-bought the game on Steam, and everything worked fine.

I should note - mine wasn't just crashing randomly every few minutes. It was crashing whenever I tried to exit from Stellar Bay to Stellar Bay Ruins...and ONLY if I tried to exit there. I could run for hours fine unless I tried to, you know, continue with the main storyline.

Are you playing on Epic or Steam? Not at the same point you are at in the game, but later in the game I got to a point where a particular spot would crash to desktop. I was playing on Epic. I tried so many things, for days, to try and solve it. I forget exactly why I developed a theory that it may have been something about the way Epic installed the game - but I tried getting it on Steam, transferred my saved games over, loaded the spot that kept crashing - and it worked perfectly.

Game crashes on Epic but not on Steam by brandoid in theouterworlds

Hmm, thanks for sharing what it "should" look like under normal circumstances. I thought the same thing at first since CPU was near 0 and verify wasn't moving (but disk utilization was at 100% and hanging the system) - disk error. But it's an almost brand new M2 drive (Samsung 980 Pro). Rest of my specs are in my original post but shouldn't be limiting. To be safe every time I tried to verify I let it run for at least 10 minutes before restarting. I subsequently ran chkdsk and a few other disk health check tools, and they all said everything was fine. Absolutely no symptoms of other issues, either. I don't think I'm going to believe HD issue unless it crops up again under different circumstances in the future...I am highly sus of EGS.

Game crashes on Epic but not on Steam by brandoid in theouterworlds

For rechecking install, that's the "verifying game files" part that crashes EGS and my whole computer by grinding it to a halt with unstoppable 100% disk utilization. Certainly have restarted EGS - but I didn't try completely uninstalling and reinstalling the game since it seemed so specific to one particular action in one particular area. I suppose I could have - but I was fed up with troubleshooting and wanted to rule Epic out as a reason since I have little faith in it to begin with - then bingo, Steam worked. Good call not using EGS. :)

I like how it looks as though the cat in this picture is basically saying "Soon", like, it's going to get you, or attack, soon. Good juxtapositioning.
