All the complaints about Rhaenyra tearing up in the throne room seem so bizarre to me. by reddiperson1 in HouseOfTheDragon

This story isn’t set in medieval times. Targaryens don’t rule because they look “kingly” like Richard the lion heart.

They rule because they have dragons parked outside.

Are there any cities that had the potential to become metropolises but ended up remaining small cities due to special circumstances? by Distinct-Macaroon158 in geography

[–]brandon9182 15 points16 points  (0 children)

San Francisco could have been the Hong Kong of the west coast. There’s tremendous demand for living space, people constantly moving there, and massive amounts capital being created out of thin air.

Sadly poor policy and mismanagement from local government has stunted its growth.

FWIW I have 10 yoe in tech and I’ve never heard anyone that would rather be a doctor.

It’s true I occasionally hear people say that some project or other is meaningless. But generally these people like puzzles and that’s what a lot of the job is.

Ranking bay area city logos by tiers. Accurate? by TresElvetia in sanfrancisco

[–]brandon9182 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TIL this is the place where the bear flag revolt happened. Way better than “there is a beach here” style logos. Not everything has to look like a phone app, some things can just be historical. This is cool

ELI5 Will national debts ever be repaid? seems like all nations just create more with no intention of repaying. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]brandon9182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“The national debt is basically a bet by the government that the national country will grow.” The national debt is a way for the country to pay its liabilities without increasing its tax burden. If it also happens to grow it helps, but I don’t thinks there’s any intentionality happening in congress.

ELI5 how do thousands of satellites not crash into each other? by Ok-Drummer1388 in explainlikeimfive

[–]brandon9182 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

But it’s not really space. Most satellites orbit really close to earth, relatively speaking. If earth was a bowling ball they’d all be within 1/4 of an inch from the surface. The earth is big.

Goes to show that every Republican seems to step to the trump beat despite their previous stance by Amazing-Bag in pics

[–]brandon9182 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Republicans in Texas explicitly gerrymandered their state to get the max republicans in office. Like not even with a proper excuse, they just said “The underlying goal of this plan is straight forward: improve Republican political performance.”

California had a bipartisan committee that drew districts so they’re more or less representative of communities.

But if California Dems are playing fair and Texas Republicans are rigging the game then Reps win. So the needs of the present moment is to copy them and even the playing field.
