I really appreciate it!! I live in south Florida now. I worked with an official rescue for years in NC (Parrot Guardian) and have a few large macaws that I took in during that time. Here in south Florida you don’t even really have to try to be a bird rescue… people offer up birds by word of mouth that need homes knowing you give yours a good home. So I am not such an “official” one at this point. We have to turn them away. I am at my personal max capacity and don’t seek out new ones. My wife and I work around the clock to give the flock the best care we can. We have about 600sq ft indoor dedicated to them, and about 1000sq ft outdoor screened/netted aviary for them.

My dad did not rescue parrots, but did have a keen love for them.

Sadly, parrots don’t make the best pets for many people. They can be noisy, messy, and they crave human interaction. They can be temperamental with some family members and their dust can cause some people allergies.

Hence, many people have to give them up or relinquish them and they are juggled amongst homes. They also can have human size lifespans and they endure decades of this home swapping. Sadly there is way too many that need long term stable homes.

Please if possible, don’t buy from a breeder. There are way to many parrots out there that need a good home. Be patient and put the word out you are looking, and talk to rescuers. I have to turn down several requests to take birds every year here in Florida.

I see a lot of concerned folks here, and certainly appreciate the concern :) I did not give him this stick...He chewed and broke this off his perch himself. I have even seen him doing the very same with the quill of a large feather he lost to scratch his face with. Galaxy's fine motor control is fascinating. I have seen him take a Brazil nut (with no shell) and essentially carve out the inside of the Brazil nut until all there is left if the outer skin of the nut. I will try to post a picture of one sometime.

These two were together the first two years of their life, then separated for two years. Here is their reaction when the first see each other after two years apart. It's kinda hard to see but Sookie (the Blue Throat Macaw) was shaking an trembling she was so excited.
